: Best 24" LCD?

My Benq FP241W has developed a weird sort of...dark...spot on it. Not dead pixels but just a strange dark stain on it. No, it's nothing actually on it that can be cleaned...I've got no idea what it is.

So I'm going to look into buying something new and...well, I haven't had to buy a monitor for years after this one cost me damn near $1000 years ago.

I use a Benq G2400 as my second monitor (also 24") and I can clearly see that the colors and brightness aren't as good on it so I'm rather picky.

So what is the best 24" LCD? I'm mostly concerned about picture quality as I edit pictures on it and the only game I really play is World of Warcraft.

NEC PA241W-BK.

Or any one of these Eizo screens: http://www.eizo.com/global/iblick/compare/index.php?id=CG241W;CG243W;CG245W;

We've sold a few of the new NEC 27" version of the above monitor recently, and the clients rave about it.

I recognize that Eizos are probably the best but they've always been far too expensive. I mean, a couple hundred more and I'd have the 30" Apple Cinema Display.

That NEC looks promising. Why that one?

I have an asus 26.6 inch that I purchased from ncix, for 239. Couldn't be more satisfied. The HDMI lag is only 2ms too :)

If you're picky about colours and viewing angles, better get a monitor with an IPS panel. They are vastly superior to the cheaper monitors. My old Dell IPS monitor is still better than most of the screens that are sold today.

Here's a 24" one from Dell with an IPS panel. It's reasonable priced.

The HP ZR24w is excellent and modestly-priced ($460 direct).

Review - http://www.flatpanelshd.com/review.php?subaction=showfull&id=1272354232

HP ZR24W is attractive because of its IPS panel and very low price. It's cheaper than Eizo EV233WH and Dell U2410 (at least here in Denmark), and priced similar to the NEC EA231WMi. ZR24W is definitely a good monitor but it also has some disadvantages. The build quality is fair and the ergonomic functions are very good with height, tilt, swivel and pivot. The setting options are far from as comprehensive as dedicated graphic monitors but good enough for most discerning users.

Picture quality has a lot of positive elements and the sRGB mode is quite good, because of good factory settings. Color reproduction in practice is impressive as well but a tad below Dell U2410.
Response time is fast and input lag is very low making the ZR24W is suited for most gaming and movie watching. Black depth is not convincing on ZR24W, however. After calibration I measured 0.29 cd/m2 and this is worse than on the other new IPS based monitors from competitors such as Dell and NEC. Shadow detailing is good and viewing angles too. The high resolution in 16:10 aspect ratio is also a nice addition.

On the other hand ZR24W has the "dirty look" from the IPS panel that most IPS based monitors has. I would also have liked to reduce brightness further down but this was not possibly with ZR24W that hits 110.7 cd/m2 with the brightness setting at 0 (in the sRGB mode).

So who is the ZR24W for? Mostly discerning users that like a good picture and enjoy some gaming as well. Graphic artists and photographers might enjoy the HP ZR24W, too, and the price is very attractive. It doesn't beat the Dell U2410 or NEC EA231WMi but it's certainly an alternative if you're looking for a reasonably priced IPS/VA monitor. I'm a bit disappointed with the weak black levels, though.

I have a Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP and I'm happy with it. The new one uses an IPS panel (vs. the VA panel mine has), which should make it even better. The only downside to it is that it's slow to switch inputs and doesn't have a remote (I was spoiled by Sony before they stopped making monitors; my old Sony offered better picture quality, faster input switching, and a remote, which made hardware calibration much less annoying). Currently on sale for $479 at Dell.

And, of course, you have your NECs, Eizos, LaCies, etc. for your higher-end professional displays, but expect to pay more.

i remember seeing Dell has a 23" IPS LCD on sale not long ago for around $250.

Not sure how picky u are, but I think most ppl will find IPS panels picture quality at least adequate.
and you can get 4 of them for the price of 1 NEC... ;) (or probably 8 for the price of 1 Eizos!)

Samsung makes some serious good LCD. Picture quality is crisp and outstanding for gaming where you need 120hz refresh rates.
The dell monitors are sweet and you can always find cheap dell monitors on dell daily deals

IPS is the way to go. But if you can live with a TN panel like I do, Samsung makes good monitors for a reasonable price. Currently have a SyncMaster 2343BWX :)

No need to spend a fortune on screens unless your clientele base is corporate/commercial. A Dell ultrasharp or Apple Cinema displays can get pretty accurate colours/gamma.

I have a 23" Samsung PX2370 and I am really happy with it. The only thing I don't like is the stand. It looks GREAT, but is wobbly and squeaky.

http://www.pcmonitors.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Samsung-SyncMaster-PX2370.jpg

It's not an IPS though, which you would want if you do more 'true colour' stuff like photo editing as opposed to needing a really fast refresh rate for gaming (this one is 2ms)

Remember it's a wide gamut monitor, so you are going to need to make sure Windows is using the right colour profile. The standard wide gamut one works fine for me, and I disable colour profiles in Photoshop and save as sRGB.

^just make sure you dont confuse ms rate with hdmi lag. I found that out when I played ssf4 on my old moniter through my ps3.

I wish they made some decent LED 24"+ panels (with minimal 1200 vertical).

I'm looking to upgrade my dual Samsung T240 and I can't seem to find anything to suit.

I'd never go back to a 'taller' display. being able to have a web browser + twitter + MSN + sidebar gadgets all on the same screen is awesome. Then you have games and movies.

Do you do any development? I used to have my 19s in landscape so I could see more code at once. My new 24s are too big too mount vertically (found myself scanning up/down too often) yet I would really like more vertical screen resolution.

I have a new dell laptop with a 16x9 screen, tried the default 1366x768 resolution before ordering and hated it, everything seemed so small, so I ordered the 1920x1080 screen.

07-26-2010, 12:24 PM
Nope, just writing, reading, video games, movies, etc. For coding I could see why you'd want a taller display. For just about everything else, maybe not. Guess it's just down to odd personal preferences

Ronin

Coding or other sort of text based work I can see the usefulness of a "taller" screen but for everything else, widescreen is just better.

Unless you get a 30 and two 20s to mount in vertically to match.

excels & documents work suck on 16:9

Even for photo editing work...i don't see much advantage of using widescreen since most photos are taken in 1.3-1.5 aspect ration...(while 16:9 has a 1.77 aspection ratio)

The only time I like wide screen is for movies and gaming...

but nowaday you actually have to pay a premium to get non widescreen format display.

but nowaday you actually have to pay a premium to get non widescreen format display. Excel is WAY better with widescreen ... First of all, you get more visuals in the ribbon, which makes your workflow easier. Comparing worksheets side-by-side is easier. You have more cells to work with. WTF is the problem ? I use Excel every day and, when I went to a widescreen monitor, it was a frickin' godsend.

Photo editing ... So your photos aren't widescreen ? What's your point ? Guess what, that means you can have tool bars down the side, which means you can your work done quicker instead of going through menus all the damn time.

I don't know about you, but I actually like to get my work done quickly so I can spend my free time playing games. A widescreen monitor benefits both.

you actually end up with wasted space in the ribbon with 1920px width
most ribbons will show everything in just 1280px width

problem obviously is you have to scroll up and down a lot more often in widscreen vs standard aspect ratio. (and obviously you can't compare 1920x1080 vs 1280x1024, since one has almost double the pixel)

photo editing: well, a lot of the vertical space are already taken up by the program tabs, options, status bar...etc
and the vertical space is usually what restrict how big you can zoom the photos on the screen and still see everything.

I hate it when ppl talk about widescreen as if you only get more width, but totally ignore the fact that you lose the vertical space

Also, way to just completely ignore the fact that you can customize the ribbon, which allows you to add way more commands and that you can rotate any decent widescreen monitor to give you far more vertical space if that's what you really want.

How do I lose vertical space, exactly ? Care to point out some 24" 4:3 or 5:4 monitors for me the OP to consider instead of the hundreds of widescreen models ?

think about the people who do paper work or work on excel 8 hrs a day.

Really? I work on DBs a lot and love the wide screen format, lets me see really wide tables, or multiple tables joined. Plus the 16:9 allows me to view 2 or 3 documents side-by-side.

I just want 16:9 with more vertical resolution.

The 30" Apple Cinema Display isn't very good. The new 27" screen looks promising for the price though.

The NEC has a HUGE colour gamut, and has built-in hardware calibration. Also, although it is a CFL screen, each of the 16 or so CFL's are individually monitored and adjusted for even brightness. It's about $1200 retail.

As you have an iPad, get that app that places all of your Photoshop palettes on the iPad so that you can have the entire main screen for the image you're working on. It works seamlessly via Bluetooth with Macs, and you can choose your tools by touching the screen!
