A Canadian forces CF-18 fighter jet crashed at the Lethbridge County airport Friday afternoon.
CTV News has learned the jet was flying at a low altitude before it crashed at the airport at around 12:20 p.m.
Officials report the pilot hit the ground hard. Capt. Brian Bews, who is stationed out of 3 Wing from CFB in Bagotville, Quebec was taken to hospital in Calgary and is being treated for a sore back and scraped up arms.
The pilot successfully ejected just moments before the jet went down during a practice session for the Alberta International Air Show, which begins Saturday.
"Large fireball burst out the side -- the pilot did eject safely but was dragged several hundred feet along the ground," said witness Darren Jansens.
The jet was doing a low speed pass about 300 yards from the terminal, and the captain was only 100 metres above the ground when he ejected.
The crash is now under investigation. It's not known whether the jet ran into trouble landing during mid-air maneuvering or on take-off or landing.
The fighter jet has been used by the Canadian Forces since 1982.
The Alberta International Air Show will go ahead as planned, but the CF-18 aerial demonstration will be grounded.

Are these the same jets that are being replaced by newer jets (that whole 9B budget) ?

yes, the 30 year old Hornets need to be replaced, just as much as our freaking Sea Kings do.
Really, we should just scrap the air force and use Canada Geese instead. We have more pilots than planes, and more people know about Canada's Air Cadet system then they do about the Air Force

From some Flickr comments: "I actually saw the CF-18 moments before the crash and the resulting fireball, but thought the aircraft had just gone into the clouds. The fireball I thought was from the pyrotechnics they used for the Tora Tora Tora event, but found out a bit later that it was from the plane crash.."

indeed, and the next shot would have been even more amazing if he didn't let go of the shutter.

I heard on the news that someone heard a few loud bangs before the jet went down. I am guessing if the plane was experiencing a compressor stall during a low speed pass. Which then resulted in the aircraft stalling. Being at an extremely low altitude there was not enough time to recover.

holly shit at the fire pic, dude is prob shitting his pants
They're (unofficially) saying it was a mechanical issue not pilot error. Right engine seems to have failed and then the speed was too slow during the High Alpha pass for the pilot to prevent a stall with a single engine.

Fuck air shows. It seems like every year we hear about some idiot pilot crashing his plane, killing himself, or killing spectators at these stupid events.

The pictures of the aircraft moments before hitting the ground look so eerie. Planes aren't supposed to do that (point nose down) - especially that close to the ground!
wow...almost looks like there is a cockpit on the bottom with that paintjob
I did a double-take as well - and wondered where the vertical stabilizers were. They purposely paint it on there to confuse enemy pilots.

That's kinda narrow-minded... How else would plane lovers see these awesome machines up close?
I don't have stats, but I bet it's more likely that accidents are the result of mechanical failure. I'd hope that the pilots that perform at air shows aren't rookies!

Based on that logic...
Fuck auto racing, skydiving, amusement park rides, boating...
If you're a fan of aircraft and aviation, air shows are great entertainment because they are an opportunity to get up close to sights and sounds the general public is otherwise kept far away from.
According to here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_airshow_accidents_and_incidents
There's only small handful of accidents worldwide each year. A small minority of those involve spectators.
The pilots spend years and thousands of hours training to fly aircraft. Idiots don't make it past ground school.
You may not enjoy them, but many people do, and they aren't stupid.

It looks like the right engine stalled from one of the pictures in the globe and mail. Maybe the recovery for slow flight in the high alpha pass was to light the afterburners but right engine stalled causing a forceful yaw. To compensate this yaw, the pilot puts in left rudder but possibly no much airflow over the rudders. Also not to mention Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) can't do much since in order to correct this imbalance, there needs to be sufficient airflow over the aircraft. Just my 2 cents

I have no problems changing my views on things. If someone can present an argument or retort properly, and I agree with their view, I'll be happy to change.
But if people act like morons and trolls, I treat them accordingly.

The CF-18 don't have FADEC. FADEC is something fairly new. The F/A-18E/F have FADEC. You have to rig the FCU with good old rig pins, a tensiometer, turnbuckles.

Looks like whats left of the wreckage is coming here to Cold Lake for examination. I'd like to have a look at the right engine, especially the low pressure compressor.
