Nissan recalls Cubes over fire risk

Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. is recalling 51,100 Cube compacts in North America after U.S. safety regulators said a fuel leak could cause a fire after a crash, the regulator and the automaker said on Monday.
The chance that 2009 and 2010 model year Cubes could leak fuel if struck from the rear at 80 km/h led to the recall, documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show.
Last week, Nissan suspended sales and shipments of Cubes from Japan to the United States and Canada. Markets outside North America are not affected, said Nissan spokesman Colin Price. Nissan said no injuries or crashes have been reported in relation to the issue with Cube, a quirky box-shaped compact sedan.
Sales and production will resume once a manufacturing fix is in place. Price said Nissan was working with its suppliers on the manufacturing fix. The Cube failed a NHTSA test in which it is struck from the rear at 80 km/h. Fuel leaked when the Cube was put on its side after the impact, the tests showed.
Cube owners will be notified by late August to bring their vehicles to Nissan dealers for a fix. The fix involves installing a protection for the fuel filler recirculation tube in the fuel neck of the vehicles.
Nissan offered no estimate of the cost to repair the Cubes.

that would be an honor to have the Japan waste millions of dollars just to launch a plane and land it in my living room just because of a few words I typed over the internet.

not trying to make anyone on this forum feel bad, but I'm just stating my own feeling when I see a cube.
Honestly, it stands out in parking lots. I would notice it and stare at it for a few seconds, with a big frown.
I don't stare at it because it has those nice roof lines found on ferrari, qaud exaust tips found on m5, fender glares founds on genesis coupe, headlights found on A4, etc. I stare at it because I don't understand who would design (look wise) something like that.
It's not hot, and it's definitely not cute IMO.
I never said it can't do things just as well as other cars that are priced around the same price. Not considering its price, I just think it looks ugly.
Thank god they are not the number one selling car in Vancouver. Or else I will need to wear sun glasses everyday of the year whenever I walk outside.

Cole notes: Everyone has different tastes in cars (appearance wise), and my taste dislikes the cube very much.

Awesome! It's like the next-generation Pinto!
Gets rear-ended.. then for dramatic effect, rolls over on its side to die... lets the fuel out... blammo! Does it let out a big groan as it goes over?
Maybe they can rename it the Nissan Darwin.. to help weed out the population a bit.

I don't hate the cube as a whole. I only dislike the look. I've never been in one so I can't judge its performance or interior.
who likes to drive on a box with wheels wtf

imo neither cube nor xb are good looking cars. i'd take a xb over cube any day base only of the fact that its exterior is symmetrical. but what do i know. haha. in my ideal world automatics don't exist, everyone drives 500hp sports cars, gas is free. so i guess my opinion is a bit skewed.
oh ya, cubes blowing up are bad. it might damage nice looking cars within its proximity. although, what i'd like to see is a cube hit another cube.

Hang on, I just re-read that first post...
80km/h?? Chances are you're going to be pretty fucked up anyway if someone hits you and is going 80km/h more than you are... I'd be more worried about a broken neck and ruptured internals than a fire.
