L.A. Chicken by Cambie Rd. & No.5. Only get the chicken though everything else sucks.

Boonie's apparently has fried chicken too but haven't tried it yet.

I was reading one of the daily rags a couple days ago, and one of the articles had mentioned that Refuel Restaurant has really good fried chicken...

It comes at a price though... like $18 for a two piece dinner.

I'm still interested in trying it one of these days though. :D

LA chicken is good but damn its expensive!
3 piece meal cost over 13 bucks after tax.
comes with a coleslaw, fries and gravy or you can substitute the coleslaw for a drink.

churches chicken gets my vote overall.

PoCo on the corner of Prairie and Coast Meridian. Get the spicy/crispy, fries, gravy and onion nuggets. There are also a few more locations in Abby and Chilliwack.

You know how Church's is mostly owned/operated by Flips? Well, Lee's is the same but for Koreans. Lee...Korean.....

Couple of other interesting facts:

Church's and Popeye's merged in '89.
Lee's founder, Lee Cummings was Colonel Sanders nephew and help start KFC with him.

Cool beans... although based on the info that the new restaurant that replaced the Burnaby location, Happy Day Metro House, still has the same fried chicken, I think I'll probably just schedule a visit there sometime. :)

I looked up the info, and back in '89, Popeyes as the 3rd largest fried chicken chain, actually bought out Church's, who were the 2nd largest.

But the parent company actually sold of Church's again in 2004, so the two are no longer related.

According to "unit" they Koreanized the chicken there.

After reading the wiki entry on Church's, looks like they're getting passed around like a Surrey whore.

I go to that churches chicken once or twice a week for lunch. 2 spicy chicken burgers with no tomato but a slice of cheese. I go to the rogers and buy the pv bluerays while I wait lol

I don't think church's ever had pieces at $0.50 each. Back about 7-10 years ago, they had the regular 10 piece dark meat for $9.99, so a buck a piece. That's the cheapest i can recall and i goto churches regularly since i lease them the land they operate on.:D

Church's is still pretty good in my books.

i remember a bit over 10 years back their 10 pcs were $12
i just had a 4 piece 2 days ago with small fries and the total was $9.

lol it doesn't bother me too much when places jack their prices up..by when they seem to buy smaller drumsticks too :(

anyone prefer drumsticks ove thighs? i always try to ask for drumstiks only..sometimes they are anal and wont let ya.

This is exactly why I never get their combos and why I always just get the 10 piece + gravy + fries for $19. Or just the 10 piece for $14 or whatever it is. Way more worth it.

Also, it's not southern fried, but the place near the Triple O's at the food court of aberdeen does some really juicy fried chicken wings.

I'm not even joking but the last time I saw somebody who isn't Filipino work at Churches was over 5 years ago. I'm not trying to be funny and stereotype but I'm dead serious. With that said, I've only been to 3 locations in the last 5 years or so, Fraser and 41st, Lougheed by Gilmore, and Hastings and Nanaimo which I go to 90% of the time.

I haven't really tried Chicken World, LA, nor Have I even had KFC since Highschool. It's pretty much always Churches for me, 10 Piece Spicy Thighs + Gravy.

honeys uses the lees chicken recipe for their normal fried chicken.
they used to actually be a lees chicken crossed with a korean restaurant (some japanese food too).
i swear lees chicken never knew about what they were doing or they would have lost their license to sell lees chicken a long time ago.
they were serving alcohol, different types of food, korean restaurant atmosphere... it was weird.

soon

chicken is their main selling product

a peice of chicken ( lets say a upper thigh) to them roughly costs 1.20-2 bucks ( including flour, breading, eggs , spices etc). Couple posts up someone claimed they gave them 4 extra pieces so lets say each chicken costs rougly 1.50 to them. 1.50 x 4 = 6 bucks! ( equals to the price of their 2 piece combo)

and thats not calculating the labour that went into prepping the chicken and what not.

say they give out 20 peices of chicken away for free a week that equals to 120 bucks a month and in time that will definitely hurt. Judging by their prices looks as if their profit margins isnt that big either.

I doubt they got business problems - it's so low budget and lately when I've been there it's been booming with business, much more so than in years past.

In any case, my brother and I are willing to buy the place and keep it going if that's what it takes to keep their chicken flowing down our gullets.

your estimation is astronomical. i could honestly make 4 pieces of fried chicken in my home kitchen for half that price. just this week i bought a 9 pack of chicken thighs from pricesmart for $5. including breading, eggs, etc... thats still probably around $6. and im not buying in bulk from suppliers like they are.

also, they usually give extras during slower hours, because those pieces represent their surplus and included their waste calculation (every restaurant calculates about 10% for waste). its their strategy for using what would have been wasted to keep their customers loyal, and it works.

and its not like they just up and started giving away chicken last week. they've been doing it for (many) years and they're still right there.

Yeah, I've had it a few times... because they had a group buy voucher a few months back where you get $13 worth of stuff for $6.

For six bucks, I get six pieces plus an order each of onion rings and fried zucchini sticks... not bad.

The chicken itself isn't bad... so in general, comparing it with KFC and Church's, i would say:

Size of pieces:
1. Church's
2. Chicken World
3. KFC

Tastiness:
1. KFC
2. Chicken World
3. Church's

Depends what I end up frying. If it's like store bought hashbrowns, fries or gyoza, then the oil last longer. Ditto with anything in beer batter.

But when you start doing chicken, or like pub style wings night at home, then you might only be able to get 1 session out of it. The flour gets in there an burns. I'm still looking for a filter I can hook up to it and stretch my oil out for 2-3 sessions.

Was given a discount on a 3 piece meal at Churches. Meal was supposed to be like 10 bucks taxed in, but came out to 7.90. Guess it was because I was wearing my Toyota uniform since everyone there knows one of the service advisors from his church.

When I got my total I was like  then :fullofwin:. Delicious meal was delicious.

$40 for chicken for two with beer, tax and tip

Cuisine: Korean

During a 10-hour stopover in Seoul last month, I went on a whirlwind culinary tour with an expat food blogger. We hoofed it to a street vendor for freshly steamed kimchi buns, made a mad dash through narrow cobblestone alleys to snack on hand-shaped dumplings stuffed with pork, crushed tofu and sweet potato noodles, then sat down to 12 quick-fire courses at a gourmet Buddhist temple restaurant. Sadly, one local taste sensation we didn’t have time to try was the city’s famous KFC – the other kind.

“You’ve never had Korean fried chicken?” my guide exclaimed, as we devoured deep-fried shitake mushrooms brushed with a sweetly sour chili glaze, the monks’ refined vegan variation.

No, I hadn’t. But upon returning to Vancouver, I made it my mission to find some of this crisp, papery skinned, American-inspired bird that has flown the coop and fluttered full circle, recently ascending as one of the trendiest comfort foods in New York and Los Angeles.

A cross between Southern fried chicken and Buffalo wings, Korean fried chicken (yangnyeom dak) acquires its distinctive crunch from a par-frying technique that renders the fat from the skin, making it thinner and less greasy. Although recipes vary, the chicken is usually dredged in a fine-flour batter, fried for 10 minutes at a relatively low heat and shaken vigorously in a wire strainer to smooth out the coating’s nubs and crags. After being quickly cooled, it is plunged back into the deep fryer until evenly browned and tossed in sauce, which is absorbed through the lean crust without getting soggy.

The search led to Happy Day Metro House, a garishly lit outpost on Kingsway near Boundary Road. Seated at a spacious purple booth while being serenaded by Korean pop and Katy Perry, a friend and I were slightly disappointed to discover that this suburban dive doesn’t provide the customary complements of pickled radish (their wilted broccoli banchan looked awfully sad) or Korean beer (we made do with draft glasses of Okanagan Spring lager). Happy Day does, however, offer massively mounded plates of “real potato chips” (imagine the spiraled “hurricanes” at Richmond Night Market, plucked off their wooden skewers and heavily salted).

After perusing a confusing menu (three menus, actually) with 20-odd fried chicken dishes overlapping in several sections, we eventually settled on spicy drumsticks and a combo platter of boneless white and dark meat with mustard sauce on the side.

“On the side?” an otherwise aloof waitress asked quizzically. Lesson learned: Don’t ignore a server’s subtle hints when dining in unfamiliar territory.

There was nothing wrong with our long juicy tenders buried under slivered green onions. Or the mustard sauce, a magnificently sinus-tingling, minced garlic slurry. Pale golden breading was thicker than expected, leading us to wonder if the chicken had been fried only once – or perhaps brined and steamed before frying (the method David Chang uses for his rarefied Korean fried poulet rouge at Momofuku Noodle Bar.)

But when reheating the leftover pieces (still crisp and moist two days later), I couldn’t help thinking that we had missed a potentially explosive KFC moment by not eating them sizzling hot right out of the fryer, all tangled up in sticky scallion clumps. If you go, order your chicken as the server suggests – although you can safely skip the spicy drumsticks (more delicately fried, but heavy-handedly smeared in goopy, fermented-chili gochujang).

A modern snack food not served in traditional restaurants, Korean fried chicken is still a stealthy target in Greater Vancouver. Zabu Chicken was the only other place I could find it.

Painted in wall-to-wall black and pulsing with bubbly pop music, this rowdy student hangout in the West End’s little Korea Town is more of a late-night bar than restaurant. But it does offer take-out, plenty of Korean beer (including a shattered bottle of Hite that one very tipsy urban soldier dropped at our feet) and extremely addictive, crackly crusted, lightly sauced KFC.

While Zabu’s “freshest, not frozen” chicken can be ordered in various portions of wings and sticks, I suggest the “original,” a whole chicken hacked into bite-sized pieces with all its flavourful thigh meat and finely crusted back bones that are such fun to scrape and chomp. Especially when tossed in Zabu’s finger-licking soy garlic sauce, a mildly sweet honey-garlic glaze ignited by savoury umami. And served with a refreshing side dish of pickled radish.

Mission deliciously accomplished.

Anything Korean here in North America is overpriced. Don't even deny it because it's true.
You mean in Vancouver? Korean food in the States is cheap (Seattle, LA, SF).

That's because Korean food lacks any kind of creativity and nowhere what one could even consider a 'cuisine" because all they did was rob ideas from the Chinese, Japanese and now North American styles of cooking.

You sound very opinionated... too bad your opinion is retarded. A country's cuisine is a reflection of it's history and trade with other countries. Pretty obvious Korean food is going to be influenced by the Chinese and Japanese and vice versa.

This is somewhat true. I've heard first-hand stories of Koreans going to Costco and eating the hot dog CONDIMENTS as a meal as 'ghetto kimchi'

On second thought, I guess it is pretty creative to make a meal out of hot dog condiments.

Got the 10pcs for $13.99.

Chicken itself was pretty good. It was crispy, juicy and you couldn't really taste the oil.

This is definitely different than the ones you get from church's/kfc. I'm not sure how to describe it.

it isn't the best that I've ever had but it is certainly good. They deep fry it on order so you know it's always fresh.

Also ordered to zucchini sticks for 2 dollars (with taxes). I'm a sucker for these and they taste the same they do anywhere (reminded me of church's when they still had them).

I would give it a solid 8/10.

It's tough to say.

Their pieces are bigger than church's but they need more seasoning/better seasoning.

The oil they use is much better than church's though as you don't feel like death after eating it.

In some areas, they are better but in some they are worse. I wish they offered a spicy option though.

Went to try L.A Chicken today.

Ordered a 2pc combo, which included thigh + breast, fries, gravy and a drink. Total was $8, which I found a bit expensive. Had the choice of crispy or original, and picked one each. The original was better IMO, had more of the "chicken" taste. The crispy was a bit spicy and it was quite bland. The fries were bland as well, but the gravy was good !

Food - 5/10
Price - 5/10
Service - 8.5/10

I'm sure it would, but IMO, it was still a bit high for me.

Went to Chicken World today. It was made fresh and it was HOT. Taste was better then L.A Chicken, and I would easily put it above them. But, compared to Churches it's still below in the taste category. Price was fair, $8 for 5pc and I found the chicken to be larger then those of L.A chicken. Plus, the lady was very nice and friendly.

IMO, Churches > CW > L.A, dunno about KFC, as I haven't had it in awhile.

Just had this and didn't find it that great. $16 is an ok price considering it's a sit-down place and you get the following:

2 wings + 2 drumsticks - both the batter and meat are kind of bland
onion rings - batter too thick, hard, and salty for my taste
gravy - bit salty
coleslaw - OK, nothing special

1. The fried chicken was pretty good. Not as good as home, but I think better than the KFC and churches by a bit.
2. Gravy was ok, a touch salty, but not overly so.
3. Onion rings were WAY too salty.
4. Coleslaw was total meh. Not gross, but not good either.

For $16, it's actually pretty good considering you're getting this at a pub.

The rosemary isn't wasted. It's been deep fried.
Eat it along with your chicken. It's good.
And I for one am happy that they have decent food as well as an extensive beer collection. I mean, it's not like they are charging a lot more for their beer to have decent food there.

I'd even go so far to say that their poutine and pizza was well above expectations.

I've tried Max's chicken. They only sell it as a whole chicken for $14. They deep fry the entire chicken. The brine they use has lemon/lime in it. To me it just tastes like those whole roasted chicken you get at walmart/superstore but deep fried, but its 5.99 at the super market. It could have been like that because I didn't eat it at the restaurant, and got take out.
