honestly, this is a vague question. its ultimately customer service. but background knowledge with automotive, at least basic servicing (eg, whats in a tune up?) would be essential.

Didn’t want to make another thread, this is kind of off topic but still kind of works since we are talking about SAs

I'm currently working as a Level one apprentice, but I have not passed the new ITA written final exam... (I just tried it a second time a few days ago and i didn't feel good about it)

I do have some service advisor experience because of cut backs at my shop;i am currently the SA and Apprentice
With the new ITA final exam for both 1st and 2nd year and the fact that working on cars is actually "hard work" I was thinking that maybe i should go and be a service advisor at another place.

IDK from what I’ve seen, a lot of successful SAs and Service Mangers were starting off as Apprentices first....

I'm still young so i can still kind of change my mind, but I don't really know what to do
what do you guys think? Tech or SA?

Did some work experience at both New Pacific Nissan and JP Toyota in Surrey during high school. Yeah, I don't work at either anymore, but at least I have first-hand experience before I go into the BCIT program in a couple of months.

On that note, anyone got a weekend opening for lot attendants? My current FT job only runs to October.

Try this:
http://www.autotrainingcentre.com/automechanic-auto-body-school-surrey/automotive-service-advisor.php
They say "...you can expect your salary automotive service to be $60,000, plus benefits...", but in reality it wouldn't be nearly that high. Expect $2500/month to start, depending on the dealership.

Let's put it this way, dealing with customers is harder than working on cars. Honestly working on cars is easy. It all becomes routine and diagnostic is just experience and paying attention to what you're working on.

When it comes down to it, it depends where you work at.

I've known techs who clear 100g a year (flat rate busting ass) at the same time I've known some who barely make 40g
I've known service advisors who clear that (commission based on sales) I've known some who make shit all.
I've known techs who make 40 bucks an hour. I've known some who are at max pay at 22 bucks an hour.
I've known lot attendants who make 17 bucks an hour. I've known some who make less than 10.

IT ALL depends on WHERE you work at, small shop, specialty shop, dealership, union, non union, domestic, japanese european.

I cannot stress this last point enough, no matter what job you decide to do, the environment is the most important thing for a long lasting job/career.

depends... some places get bonuses that I'm aware of. But they are either on a base salary, or hourly usually.

!SG

apparently there is a new course out at BCIT for service advisory.

like with most jobs at a dealership, outside of techs and basic jobs, any advisor, or sales job would be on a performance commission base income. it either be salary or hourly, but would be at a basic level. you get more income based on performance, sales numbers, customer service rating...

depends on the department and company, the bonus can be equal if not more compared to the base pay.

I would like to clear a few things up with service advisors.

1: You do NOT need formal education. All that's required is that you possess good C/S skills and that you know the basic workings of a vehicle. All cars more or less operate the same way, with some small details that work differently (ie: AWD system in an Audi is different than in a Volvo).

You usually start as an apprentice, a tech who cannot go on due to injury/boredom, or a wash kid, and move up. I was lucky and I was able to talk my way into a SA job (I do have the mech knowledge).

2: A crappy dealer or a non brand specific shop (IE: crappy tire) will pay by the hour or salary. The usual dealer always will pay an advisor salary, with profit sharing to start. They're in 2 categories:

a) By department profit - Total profit of the service/parts department, customer pay portion only (no warranty claims). The advisor will receive a set percentage of that (0.5% of total profit, ie $150,000, etc). This method is good because the advisors don't need to worry about quota, but the earning potential is less.

b) By per-advisor quota - Set quota for each advisor, all uniform, and different at every dealer (I worked at mitsu, it was 20k/month, while Ford was 30K). The advisor will receive, usually 5% of total customer pay sales at every end of the month, as long as he/she passes the quota. They're pretty easy to pass, given that you know how to push products. (At mitsu I was making EASY 1200-1800/month on commission based on that). The drawback is though, if the advisor misses too many customers, or the shop is slow, they won't make quota. But honestly, it's pretty damn easy. These quotas are pretty easily achieved.

also, There are such things as SPIFFS, which are bonus programs an advisor can earn. They're usually different every month, such as tyre sales, or system flush sales, or if an advisor sells a car, they get money out of that too.

I've never earned less than 45k a year at the least, and the most 65K/year. And that was just my first 2 years as advisor. For maximum profit, it really depends on the dealership, too. I rememeber the top grossing advisor at BJBMW cleared about 60-65K/year, which translates into about 90K gross.

Hope that answers some questions =)

On that note, I would also like to say that what JGresch said about SAs making less than lot boys is completely inaccurate.

Depends on if you would like to be more hands on or more involved with people.

A good tech that's cemented at a shop with good rates can still clear a good amount of money, if they're on flate rate. Generally, an apprentice should be getting around 20/h. a flate rate tech should be at about 25. My shop foreman gets 30 but he can clear up to 18 hours of work a day, so you can imagine the money he makes. He's not a sleazeball. He just knows how to fix things right, and spot potential issues. If anything, he also gives the most discounts in terms of rates.

Mind you though, being a tech is VERY hard on the body. The shit your hands, joints, back go through, not to mention the pressure to perform and the fumes you breathe in. If you're slow, then you're screwed. Not to mention you have to be accurate and make sure shit don't come back.

An advisor's a cushy job, but you deal with more mental stress. You're literally managing the day and personal belongings of MULTIPLE people. Your memory, reaction rate, communication and most of all, organizational skills must be great, or else it will be hard to do. I personally picked advisor because it's what I love to do, and is a stepping stone to where I want to be. Not to mention, I have back problems, so I can't be a tech even if I wanted to =(.

Either way, both is good. All really comes down to if you want stress on the physical or mental level.

Applied at BJ BMW for the PT lot boy position they had up on the site. Doubt I'll get it, but I need to get my foot in the door again in time for November. If anyone at a dealership needs a temporary or otherwise weekend lot boy, let me know please and thanks!

I've played rugby for three years, so I won't be damaging my body any more than I already have, and the hand/joints/back/fume damage I did to myself as a tech assistant for work experience in 80 hours was way more satisfying than the repetitive precise shit I put up with working at my mom's plastics factory (ie. small components, and work station setup was on average 6 inches lower for my height - NOT fun having to stay hunched over constantly compared to working under a car on a hoist). I've already committed the money on going to BCIT, so I'm not turning back now.

Occasionally there would be an ad or two popping up looking for Lot Attendants.
Here's one.
http://www.revscene.net/forums/wanted-lot-attendant-t625995.html

I got $10/hour at JP Suzuki as lot boy. Honestly, I'd much rather be a lot attendant over a cook any day. I got paid $12/hour + Tips when I was a cook, and was a ten minute drive from my house, whereas I got $10/hour and I had to drive 30 - 40 minutes to get to work, I would still much rather be a lot attendant because of the environment I was in, the people I've met, and the work I was doing.

I honestly like the line of work I'm in as a service lot boy (beats McDicks, or restaurants), but I fucking hate the fact that MY section of service is the only one that has to take its lunch break on the go or when there's no cars in for service for 30 minutes. At worst, we don't get to take lunch (we do get our 15's but that's when it's dead as hell). There's always techs working regardless if the majority have taken their lunch. Every other department gets theirs.

Because I have to take my lunches late as hell, I've nearly passed out or had really low blood sugar levels because of it. Seriously, if I don't take in my meals at the right time, it hits me HARD.

There ARE upsells at a dealership, but there's usually a more strict guideline. SA's can also choose NOT to sell to a client, even based on tech recommendations.

Those ads from independant shops (MrL, etc) and etc are bullshit. So many times I have clients come in complaining about a problem such as oil leaks, bulb issues, etc., only to have my techs find wrong parts, improper installs, jimmy-rigging shit, etc. Had 1 shop sold my customer a fuel filter on her car at 60k. Volvo's don't need'em 'til about 100k! I've seen wrong oil filters, NO OIL IN ENGINE, loose filters, wrong bulbs, pre-mature replacement of parts/fluids, etc. Had one other shop location (Yes, I pick on them because they market knowledge and dependability yet they collectively fuck up the most) put the WRONG COOLANT into a client's car (GM Dexcool) and COMPLETELY fuck up the radiator and all its lines. Coolant pump too. That set back the customer almost 3Gs to fix. how did you think that case went? =)

At a dealership, a dedicated customer base is VITAL to them, as the Service Dept of a dealership is its financial backbone. Given that, the dept MUST be honest and transparent in its dealings in order to survive. Rule#1 of a dealer SA: If the car don't need it, you don't sell it. Period.

Dealers are MORE stressful. There are customer feedback systems in place that require the SA to be at their upmost attention when helping a client. Clients generally walk into a dealership expecting MORE, since you would be at the forefront of providing them with advice, and they expect that you'd know it all since a dealer deals with SPECIFIC makes. not all of them.

Remember too: 80-90% of ppl walking into a dealership is already in a pissy/upset/worried/unsure mood. It's the mixture of not knowing what to expect, time being wasted, shit being broken AND the bullshit Midas and mr.lube ads feed them.

As a SA, it would be your job to meet them, take their shit, not take it personally, and have them smiling and shaking your hand once they've paid and left with the car. All the same time, hoping the tech's axtually fixed the problem.

I love my job. I love cars. I love dealing with these situations. It's the main reason why I left a large international corporation for. I'm totally down with the work, and I'm totally ok with the stress because I can deal with it. I can sell, and I can establish that trust within the first 2 minutes a client meets me for the first time. Can you? Only way to find out is to try it.

can you shrug off rudeness?

Can you make snap decisions?

Can you talk to people, all the time, from different backgrounds, circumstances and temperaments?

Can you handle stresS?

If you can't say yes to all those above, then SA may not be for you.

Remember, it's MORE stress at a dealer. Not less.

Hey, i met the foreman of the n-van volvo about 10 years ago at my ex's friend's friend wedding. We were happened to be seated at the same table and when we found out we were both tech's at dealerships, naturally we ended up talking shop.
What really impressed me was when I said my brother in-law brings his volvo to that dealer, i described the car, 95 black 850 turbo sedan, he sat back thought for a second then blurbed out my bros inlaw's name. I thought wow! you're good.
can't remember the foremans name though and not even sure if he's there anymore.
This november marks my official 20 year at the same honda dealer.

apprenticeship = legal contract for apprentice to be trained while working, and they are required to go to school for the x number of years @ a % of what a licensed tech would make.

a licensed mechanic is someone that has gone to school, got their ticket, and is licensed (a tradesman) in the automotive mechanical field.

our apprentices have legal contracts with the company. they are required to go to school, pass, and with every year of advancement their pay goes up.

mechanical technician is like every other trade out there, carpentry, draftsman, plumbing... all start off as an apprentice, then journeyman, then so on and so forth.

as long as it's above 70% it doesn't matter how well you did. just take the cert and run.

For me the situation is deteriorating at my dealership, techs mad that they're not getting hours or doing jobs that don't pay well enough to them are taking it out on me. People are beginning to hate each other even more as well. Does anyone deal with any ridiculous amounts of animosity at their own shops?

Well... I currently have no openings in the sales department for lot staff. These are the guys I am directly in charge of and take part in the hiring process.
However, I heard today that our service department promoted one of our service lot guys into the shop and have not replaced him yet.

So I assume we will be looking for a new service lot guy.

If you are interested and know the location of our dealership, I encourage
you to drop in and bring in your resume.

you should actually be checking out the websites of the said dealerships. most have a "career" link to all open positions. most are even running programs to get resume submissions via the website. and to make it an even playing field, they even make their own employee's resubmit via the site as well if they plan on applying for other positions.

Won't be getting a job with that kind of thought.

I had to wait 8 months, of constant emailing, calling, cold-calls before I even got a job. Yet after 8 months, I had 3 interviews in the same week, so when it rains, it pours.

Keep your head up and don't stop applying man. Nobodies going to do it for you.

Having no previous work experience and being fresh outta HS probably doesnt help. Do they even hire people with N's? :okay:

Obviously you gotta work hard to find a job, but then again if theres someone that can give you a bit of help or connections im sure that it could be much easier.

You have to be motivated, submitting one resume a day and hoping people call you is not enough. When I was looking for work, I would send out at least 4 resumes a day, and put on some decent clothes and drop off resumes. The internet has kind of made people lazy in that way. Once I got an interview, the next day I sent an e-mail telling them thank you for meeting with me and I hope they choose me. Employers really like when people do the little extra.

flat rate techs are whiney 8 year olds by trade, the sooner you get over that, the sooner you figure out what makes them tick and work it to your benefit

i remember having a lot kid before that didnt have his license yet. still helpful, but limited to what they can do.

depending on the manufactuer, some have gone away from the manual gear box. so knowing how to drive standard isnt essential. we see a manual maybe one out of every 20+ cars?

Depends on the dealer I suppose. I assume that Euro dealers short of Mercedes see a lot more manual cars in their high-volume new stock than other makes. Not a whole lot of people order base Corolla or Civics with stick these days.

Hey guys just bumping this up I am now officially working as a car salesman at Columbia Chrysler Jeep Fiat on Minoru Boulevard (no I have not hung up my realtor license either so message me about what you need as well).

I will be sure to get you the best deal because our dealership runs very differently from others we are not commission based (flat rate for every deal closed, whether it's a used little Fiat 500 or an SRT Viper) so I will definitely hook you up better than the next Chrysler Dealership, and there is zero reason for me to upsell you something you don't need. Give me a PM if you are looking for any Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Fiat products I will be sure to work with you and grind the manager for some extra goodies for your end.

Again, used or new, it doesn't matter what you are looking for our dealer is a part of a massive chain across Canada and I can find something for every budget and need.

How much do lot attendants make usually? I was at Dueck on Marine a couple days ago, saw a few young guys starting up cars, moving them. They looked like college students.

Moved from a dealer that guaranteed eight hours + if you produce over eight = bonus to just a pure flat rate dealer.. Holy fuck it is a completely different work environment. These guys are like fucking dogs constantly hungry for work. I'm just an apprentice so I was hourly at both shops but at my new dealer it's a really hostile environment since to them I am 'stealing' work from them. Anyone else have to deal with this shit??

Damn, I guess I'm lucky my dealer only has 3 flat rate techs and the rest are apprentices. Downside to working at a dealer eh

question for you lot guys/valets?

if your ultimate goal was to enter the shop as an apprentice, how long did it take you to wait?

im not a tech, nor plan on ever becoming one.

my issue is that im having a hard time moving to a different position in the dealership when most want to keep me as the tower/dispatcher, especially when it affects their paycheque.

lesson learned, the more you take on, the more ppl expect you to keep doing it. especially if it means they dont have to do it anymore...

Yep, and because of that it severely limits the extent of the work I'm allowed to do. Brakes? Forget that for an apprentice, it's gravy. Annual maintenance service? Gravy. Flushes? Gravy. Anything that would be an opportunity for a learning experience even though I diagnosed it and know how to do it? Nope, gravy. Greed runs straight flat shops.

Took me about a year to move into the shop, but that's considering I took a BCIT Foundation course to shore up some skills before making the move.

I worked for another dealership for 1.5 years but the chances of moving up was pretty slim so I took the gamble of applying somewhere else and it took me 5 months. Just my luck that someone left and they needed someone.

I did a special course in my grade 12 year that ticketed me for first year if i completed the level 1 ita test successfully (which i did). from there i ended up working at a dealer as a lot guy.

For my dealer i did part time for about 6 months doing 20hrs a week as a lot guy while i was in my last year of highschool and volunteering my saturdays at an indy shop. after highschool, i worked 4 months full time at the dealer trying to get into the shop. i probably bothered them every week to get in as an express technician, not even an apprentice LOL.

I left my position as a full timer to go work at a canadian tire as a tire installer, stopped volunteering saturdays, and instead worked as a lot guy on saturdays, just to keep my foot in the door. it wasnt until someone left the dealer that they finally got me in as a tire and lube tech..

Basically i was a lot guy for a year, a tire installer for 6 months, a tire and lube guy at a dealer for a year, and finally an apprentice now-- even though i had my level one training done when i started as a lot guy.

My teacher said it over and over again, its just about being at the right place at the right time. put yourself out there, try new places, and definitely keep in touch with all the places you do work at so youre only a phone call away when that time comes. I am an apprentice now because my SA at my old dealer became a manager at another and gave me a call.

What kind of position did you think about moving to? tower has so many opportunities in management that is something i would def keep my head up for. My old dealer dispatch was the second man to the service manager when he was out of the building

btw.. heard a new audi dealer opening up on terminal from some coworkers + friend. anyone know any details?

where im at, im pretty much the bitch here. new guy + position = everyone sees you as beneath them.

as for chain of command, in my position, i am the fall guy for everything.

if a car doesnt get into the shop in a timely manner, if something doesnt get booked out to their liking. i do things to keep myself organized, but because of that, everyone bypasses the chain of command and goes directly to me for information, updates. ive been with the brand less than 2 years, and have only been sent on a few training courses. if i didnt have any automotive background, this job would kill me.

i also found out my position has a high turn over rate... at least where i am. the reliance of my position at my dealership is a lot more than other dealerships. hence why no one ever wants to transfer to my spot, hahaha...

i was an advisor before

flat rate shop can be good $ for the tech's if its busy enough. Not nessecarliy the best training environment for apprentices looking to learn how to do things "by the book"

Weird, I haven't seen an Audi dealership in the works. Mercedes is still constructing their new dealership though.

Can any advisors, parts or service, provide some insight on the job? I've got a chance at an in-auto group transfer to a junior parts advisor, and even though I like being an apprentice tech, it's getting to the point where my current shop politics have basically stopped my progression for nearly a full year now, and repeated requests for more varied types of work falling on deaf, egotistical ears has frustrated me to the point of just wanting to hang up my wrenches as a job, and the passion I have for cars is drying up. Maybe I'll find my fire again if I'm on the other side of the counter.

Thanks for any input.

That seems extremely high, he must be at a high end shop or a very busy shop and he is very good at wet sanding and polishing.
