Would you rather buy a 1997 Volvo S70 T5 SE or a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta VR6?

Both of the aforementioned cars are automatics. The Volvo S70 T5 has 70,000 Km, while the Volkswagen Jetta VR6 has 105,000 Km. The Volvo S70
T5 has a smoking engine and the Volkswagen has a cracked windshield. Other than the two problems noted above, the rest of the two cars are in good condition.

Smoking engine... white or blue smoke? Either way, you're looking at a major repair bill.
Cracked windshield is cheap and easy to replace.
Either way, I'd go for the Jetta. Just make sure that the TSB recalls have been done (coilpacks, etc).

Well, that cheap Volvo could end up costing beyond the OPs anticipated budget.

well.. we didnt get the definition of "smoking engine". It can be white out the tail pipe, oil out the tail pipe, a valve cover gasket leak on the exhaust manifold causing smoke in the engine bay, a PCV system (if they have them?) defective. If the price is a right, Volvo's are not bad to work on and have a reputation for reliability. In my opinion its better than the other junk.

Thanks. I just didn't want to be the first one to say this. :D

I wouldn't buy the Volvo if there was smoke coming out of the tailpipe.
And I'd never buy an automatic Mk2,3,4 VW.

Depending on what colour smoke it is (white, or blue), I'd say get the Volvo. If it's white, comes out all the time, and feels "damp" you need a new headgasket. If it's blue, and constant, probably a new turbo or at least a turbo rebuild. If it's blue, but only comes on start-up, or under boost it'll probably be the PCV system (CHEAP FIX - like $50 in parts max).
If you don't want to dick around, get the Jetta. Personally, I LOVED my 850 Turbo (had a T5 in it), and would buy another turbo brick without question.
