Anyone been there? Goldfish 1118 Mainland Street Vancouver, (Yaletown)
i was there last week and it was pretty good. It's a nicer place than Cactus Club and Earls and surely doesn't have a line up. It's "fine dining" but doesn't have the crazy 'you must dress really nice' mentality.
I like the decor and I like the place, it's a HUGE place and you can for sure book a great party of whatever size you want with a TV.
Food & Drink
To tell you the truth, their beers are 6.50 ish which is decent but what got me was their Martinis, they were close to 10 dollars. I think most of them were 9.45 which is sort of epic pricy.
Appetizer.
I tried their pan seared prawns and hakkaido sea scallops marinated with asian pear, shallot XO sauce was pretty gay. 3 scallops + 3 prawns. The prawns were not as JUMBO but they were normal size with a bit of XO sauce. For those who aren't asian i can see how it would be cool but to me it was just meh. It was really really small.
Their lemongrass braised beef short ribs were great. It had a hoisin glaze and 5-spice roasted peanuts ribs on the other hand was really good. There were 4 pieces and the servers served it on our place. It was nicely done, super tender with a tangy sauce.
Main course was sable fish and also halibut. HOISIN SAKE GLAZED SABLEFISH caramelized onion & black bean tapanade, coconut juice was super flaky and awesome, very tender and really nicely done. I just wished there were more. The halibut was BLEH because the sable fish was so good however, PAN ROASTED QUEEN CHARLOTTE HALIBUT has an orange crust with a tomato curry sauce (it comes in a cup) and you pour it in was really good. The fish tasted very diff (obviously) but the sauce and the orange crust totally made up for it.
Oh, so they asked us if we wanted a side and to be honest, you don't need it. However, we asked them what's really good, they said their BACON FRIED RICE is to die for...(scallions, garlic, organic quail eggs )
we had it... errrrrrrrrrrr it might be epic and to die for if you've never had fried rice but to me it was just 5/10. Don't get into paying 6 bucks for a half order. I seriously want to go in and cook them an epic fried rice instead.
I had their vietnamese cold coffee, it was gay. It premade and they pour it into a jar, it just doesn't taste the same as vietnamese cold coffee.
Food 8/10
decor 8/10
service 9/10
Would I go back, yes, it's cause i dont' want to line up at keg, earls, catcus club but if i go, i wouldn't go all out and spend 180 at Goldfish for 2 people.
