Free Shaw 1Gbit upgrade promo in select areas of Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton
Some may not consider this a hot deal, and those of you already with Shaw should get this without asking anyway but Telus customers may want to think about trying Shaw if this promo is in their area.

From Shaw's website:

Have you heard? Shaw is bringing unheard of speeds to the Canadian market through exciting trials of our 1 Gigabit Internet service. This service launched in select Vancouver neighbourhoods in June – and Pinebrook, a suburb west of Calgary, will be the latest area to try out the 1 Gigabit Internet service FREE for six months starting in September!

Our test neighbourhoods have the advantage of “future proofing” as they receive the best technology has to offer with Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and will be able to support new, cutting-edge Internet applications that will require faster download speeds – compliments of Shaw.

At the end of the six month trial, customers will still be able to retain their existing services without any change in features or function.

This is a great opportunity for our customers and we are thrilled to be the first provider in Canada to offer this incredible service.

Some interesting facts about Shaw’s 1 Gigabit Internet service:

10x faster than Nitro
Trial in Vancouver is now live – Calgary and Edmonton to follow in September
The service is FREE for the duration of the trials
Stay tuned for more exciting announcements about when our 1 Gigabit trial might be available in an area near you!

Watch the "select Vancouver neighbourhoods" be condos in the downtown core.

Sounds great, BUT.... you'd need a new modem, since the standard ones just have 10/100 LAN ports... and you'd need a router with a gigabit WAN port (good luck there), or just plug your machine with gigabit port straight into the router (largely negates the point of having all that speed, if you can't share it with all your machines)...

I would imagine they'd provide you with a modem to use for the trial ... They give you the modem when you get their 100 Mbps service (no rental or purchase necessary).

As for the areas, my guess would be newer communities since it would be a lot cheaper to lay fiber in an empty property than it would be to dig up existing infrastructure.

No they can't. You're looking at writing 125MB/s. PATA BURST speed is 133MB/s not sustained. You'll need SSD to write that fast.

chances are they'll tell you to switch to telus then.. shaw doesn't offer too much in terms of retention.. offering retention just means they have to charge more on the non retention ppl just to cover the lost in revenue which is bad for business in a way.. they don't have the money to throw around like telus

Well.. you just need to remember that the dl speed is 1 gigaBIT and the write speed of the drives your talking about is in megaBYTES.

So if 1 gigabit is equal to around 128 megabytes, unless your computer is from the stone age, most people should be ok.

125MB/s sequential write isn't that uncommon for single large capacity drives to achieve these days, most are close, if not over 125MB/s.

Or just raid 0 some slower drives. It wouldn't really matter anyways, i kinda doubt you'd be able to pull more than 5MB/s from any individual download.

You guys failed to read that he said 15 year old PATA.. as in IDE drives.

I stand corrected on the SSD only though. I shoulda known. I actually have 2 of those WD 2tb Blacks. lol.

I already did the conversion. Why do you think I never mentioned 1gigabit in my reply and only used MB/s

Ulic Qel-Droma

stop arguing about read and write speeds, who cares if you can't actually download at 1gbit per second.it's free, and it's gonna be way fucking faster than whatever you have. that's all ya gotta know.

terkan
08-11-2010, 10:55 PM
why do u guys even care what speed it is? 99% of you won't even noticed the difference.. sure it's advertised at 1gb.. but how many servers out there supports 1gb/s data transfer? you won't even noticed the actual difference when you have high speed xtreme vs high speed warp.. just coz 99% of the site you are going to places you are downloading from you won't reach those speed..

!MiKrofT
08-11-2010, 11:15 PM
Yes we all know that nobody is gonna really see the difference and that most sites won't even take advantage. Just discussing. No arguing. Besides. A lot of us are outside the supported areas anyways.

hmm... even tho I don't live in the DT area, I wonder if this was part of the reason why my tv and internet was down the entire damn day
