BMW in triple fatal crash going at 'ridiculous' speed

Mounties in Surrey, B.C., say a late model BMW was driving at an "absolutely ridiculous" speed early Friday morning when it crashed into the back of a truck in a construction zone on Highway One, east of Vancouver.
The driver of the vehicle and two passengers, all men in their 40s, were killed instantly in the crash. A fourth man was transported to Surrey Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
Sgt. Peter Thiessen told ctvbc.ca the car was driving through an active construction zone with a lowered speed limit of 80 kilometres an hour around 3:30 a.m. when it entered a left-hand lane that was shut down to regular traffic.
"This vehicle appears to have passed the point where the fast lane had been blocked off and it was well signed and well lit that it was closed," he said.
"For some reason it crossed over into a closed lane used for construction."
The BMW struck the rear end of a flat bed, flat iron truck parked in the closed lane. Several passengers were ejected from the vehicle and thrown several metres.

Witness Dean Hamilton told CTV News the BMW driver was going at least 120 kilometres an hour when he passed him heading eastbound near 176 Street.
"I remember looking in my mirrors when he was coming up to me thinking ‘man, this guy is flying,'" he said.
Investigators believe alcohol is quite likely a factor based on scene and eyewitness accounts.
A reconstruction team from the Integrated Collision Analyst Team arrived at the scene shortly after sunrise and was expected to probe the scene for several hours. The eastbound stretch of Highway One between 176 and 192 streets will remain closed until sometime Friday afternoon.
A constant problem
Hamilton said he frequently sees cars speed through the area where the highway is being widened to make way for the new five-lane Port Mann Bridge, which spans the Fraser River connecting Coquitlam to Surrey.
"You just need to slow down, period. And especially in construction zones," he said.
Thiessen said many construction workers were nearby at the time of the accident and it's fortunate none of them were struck.
"This didn't have to happen. This driver made choices and they were the wrong choices," he said.
"Officers are dealing with a gruesome crash and accident scene. It's terrible."
The four victims, all from the Langley/Aldergrove area, are not being identified.

120km/h on hwy 1 (at 3 am) is considered "ridiculous speed"?

Moral of the story: Don't speed in construction zones, especially on sections of the road that are closed?

+1
but then again factoring in the construction zone...
on a normal stretch of highway it isn't "ridiculous"

120km/h is usually an average highway speed, most of the time it's more.
It always seems that these crashes involve a car full of people, I guess just doing some stupid shit and not paying attention to road conditions...

I think if u guys read the news carefully, they are saying the bmw was going at a ridiculous speed. The 120 km/hr was used as a reference for the guy driving on the hwy and the bmw blew by him so I'm gonna guess he must be going 180+

I'm surprised a 2006-2008 750i, which touts the latest safety innovations did jack shit for its occupants. Physics > technology!
If it was a SUV/truck I think some might have survived
If it was a SUV/truck I think some might have survived
Not really. Trucks and SUV's give people a false sense of security. At that speed nothing will protect you when you ram into a Kiewit Flatiron, flat bed truck.
took me over an hour to get to langley at 11AM, and that's when i got off on 160th. it would have taken me much much longer if I ended up taking Hwy 1.
Traffic was just crazy for the longest time due to this accident.

thats 120km/h to 0 in a fraction of a second, its not about the safety innovations anymore, its just about your brain slamming against your skull at 120km/h

serves them right....that is an 80 zone....they deserve to die...at least they wouldnt have hit a Traffic Control person or a construction worker at 120, leaving the workers' families fatherless/motherless.
kiewit consruction works 24/7 on that hwy, so it is very possible the bmw could have struck a worker!

Thank god nobody else was hurt, 120km/h might not seem fast at all, but in a construction zone you should seriously watch your speed.
No worker / person or another car wants to be innocently struck because of somebody else's stupidity

some of the trucks on the road are dangerous and hell and should be removed from the road. you hit a flat deck truck from behend and the deck is going through your windshild and taking your head off. lots don't even have bumpers.
same with the trucks that carry the garbage bins around. they have 2 huge spikes sticking out the back.

yea yea....and you drive at the speed limit everyday right?
points being...if he is going 120km/h, obviously it isn't excessive speed that killed him, but his stupidity...(alcohol, lack of attention on the road? otherwise, how the hell does someone run into a stationary object on a hwy with clear visibility?)
if you run into a stationary flat bed truck dead stop, it doesn't matter if you are going at 60km/h or 150km/h, you are fucking dead.

Keeping in mind that this number comes ONLY from the trucker he blew past, someone who is not necessarily accurate in his estimation of speed of other vehicles.

When I was on the Austrian autobahn a couple months ago, my friend was driving her Alpha Romeo at 150km/h through construction zones (they don't have speed limits) and I shit you not I felt completely safe.
Although 120km/h isn't fast in most peoples books, Vancouver's highways aren't engineered for high speeds like our European counterparts.

It is when the area is a construction zone, and a 24/7 one to boot. Even if there aren't any workers, you never know wat kind of equipment or lane changes may lie ahead in those areas.

It doesn't matter (seatbelts) anyways, the safest car in the world won't help you if you hit a bigass flatbed (that's parked) when you're going 120km/h...
some of the trucks on the road are dangerous and hell and should be removed from the road. you hit a flat deck truck from behend and the deck is going through your windshild and taking your head off. lots don't even have bumpers.

METRO VANCOUVER - RCMP have identified the three men killed in a horrific crash that involved alcohol and high speeds early Friday morning in Surrey.
Jong Seob Kim, Gi Pyo Hong and Yongkwan Kim, all in their 40s and from Langley, died instantly when their 2006 BMW collided with a parked work truck after careening through a construction barrier along Highway 1 near Golden Ears Way.
A fourth male passenger of the BMW was taken to hospital as was one of two workers inside the parked truck. Both men were later released from hospital.
"Speed, alcohol and non use of seatbelts are all contributing factors in the deaths of the occupants of the BMW, luckily there was one survivor who was wearing his seatbelt," said Sgt. Dave Savoy of the RCMP's Port Mann Highway Patrol in a press release Tuesday.
The surviving passenger was in the front seat where the deployment of an airbag likely contributed to his survival, said Savoy."

i agree with the comments refering to speeding, stupidity, and carelessness, but honestly, saying that they deserve to die is way way too harsh. I have lots of sympathy towards them, and their family.

their families yes, them, no. it's their own fault they died, the one dude wearing his seatbelt lived (who woulda thought) which seems crazy considering the crash. although since it says 2 people were in the flatbed truck it may have been in motion thus lowering the impact of the crash.

there were 2 suv ahead of me one time driving like 45km on lougheed highway, when I tried to change lane and pass them. one of them would go in front of me and they were both travelling and same speed and box me in.
