Hi guys

My friend's house recently sunscribe to Shaw Cable Internet Phone and his PC is still connected directly to Shaw cable modem directly.

This morning I tried to add a DLINK DIR-655 wireless router to his network but after I hook up everything, his PC is hard wired to one of the LAN port of the wireless router. His PC can grab an ip address from the wireless router but he cannot go to any web site. He even reduce NIC speed and disbale fireall, no luck. How can fix this problem before tomorrow.

Please advise ASAP.

restart the modem/router
see if the router has a shaw ip address

log on to the router's setting page and go to the status screen see if it obtained an ip from the modem. able to obtain an ip from router to pc means nothing if the modem can't obtain an ip from the modem

like above, reset everything. If you don't reset the Shaw modem it won't connect to the router properly.

If the shaw account is set up for only one ip, it will be registered to the computer mac. Clone the mac of the computer that was originally connected to the shaw modem into the router and everything should work.

Remove power from modem for 30 seconds, plug it back in, voila ...

apparently it costs extra dough for you to use wireless (a router) for shaw, cousins just switched and that's what they said, again this is just what i've heard...

^ they're wrong afaik, we've always had a wireless router on our Shaw connection. You have to do some MAC spoofing for Telus basic internet tho.

After the power cycle of cable modem, things works out now.

This is not true. Telus works that way; Shaw doesn't.

You heard wrong. Shaw has never charged extra for you to use a router, wireless or otherwise.

That's usually all it takes!
