Hundreds flocked to the official unveiling of the glowing Jade Buddha for Universal Peace at an Aldergrove monastery on Sunday.
The 2.7-metre-high figure — a youthful representation of a warmly-smiling, cross-legged Buddha — was carved from a massive chunk of B.C.- mined jade, and is valued at $5 million.
The four-tonne statue is in the midst of a world-tour, and will be on display at Aldergrove’s Hoa Nghiem Monastery until August 15, before heading south to Seattle and then California.
The Australian Buddhist group who commissioned the carving of the Jade Buddha, say almost 5 million people worldwide have viewed the statue over the past year.
On Sunday, under overcast skies, hundreds approached the Jade Buddha — which was surrounded by lilies, chrysanthemums and orchids — and clapped their hands in prayer, before snapping pictures.
The faithful knelt on a green carpet and repeatedly bowed before the statue.
It was designed to be recognized by Buddhist groups worldwide, and is called the largest Buddha ever carved from gemstone-quality jade. It was shaped in Thailand from raw Canadian material, a giant 18-tonne boulder discovered in northern B.C. in 2000, and dubbed “Polar Pride.”
How spectacular was the piece of stone pried from Canadian soil? According to the Jade Buddha’s owners, gemologists say Polar Pride could be “the largest piece of gem-grade jade found ... in the millennium.”
The goal of the Jade Buddha’s travels is to harness peaceful spiritual energy and bring people from all ethnicities together.
Hoa Nghiem Monastery’s events manager Tony Vuu told The Province: “We want to bring people together ... we have to help each other.”

interesting article i found regarding the giant jade buddha.. truely amazing Very unusual lights have regularly appeared in photographs taken of the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace. These lights first appeared at Quán Thế Âm temple in Đà Nẵng. They have since appeared at every showing of the Jade Buddha in Vietnam, Australia and USA. These lights appear in a wide range of conditions and even appear inside buildings such as the Museum of Western Australia in Perth and the Sydney Entertainment Centre. But not all people seem to be able to take these photographs. They say that those only those with pure intentions and a pure heart can take photos of the lights. The lights have been called “Mandala Lights” because of the symmetrical design which has a similarity to a Buddhist mandala. The lights appear to be semi-transparent and while they appear to be largely white when enlarged they are seen to be made up of many colours. Enlargements of the lights have also shown wonderful and colourful patterns within the lights.

I just went holy crap i came there around 11 huge line up already and they were giving out tickets around 130 ish but i think they only gave out 100 or so tickets lol kind of sad i didn't get my ticket !! D= people kept budging in and all ! then after you get your ticket you have to line up again to buy the pendent. I was kind of sad I didn't get mine I'm going again tmr early !! some people go everyday to get more and more ! if you beg them they might have slight chance to get two because you know you're already there and all. and you have to be sitting down where the fence is in order to get your ticket they're very harsh about it.

Went yesterday around noon with mom...pretty cool... so many lining up for the pendant!! So didn't bother looking at that...might try to go back there earlier another day.

Hi_Im_Mike
08-10-2010, 05:28 PM
Pulled an all nighter last night for this!
6am...Only a few people there. 7am looks like around 10 women...7:30am alrite...There's 25 people there now. I was watching Entourage in my car while waiting.
Anyways got in the lineup and I swear to god...The 25 people in front of me turned into 40+ Vietnamese women who are friends with each others...Btw the lineup was around 300+ people and only 200 got the tickets for the pendant sale. Also it was 100% Vietnamese there.

If you want a pendant then come at 7:30-8:30...After that you get either the shitty ones that no one likes or you don't get one at all. If there's 25 ahead of you...At the end it'll be around 50+ so go early and reserve your spot.

Edit: Turns out We're the lucky ones. Vietnam, Australia, Toronto + everywhere else it has traveled. They only offered 500 pendants while Vancouver gets a special 1,000 pendants. Also each monastery they used on the tour gets 300-400 pendants for the people who work + volunteer there. Also heard that people in toronto paid $1,000 for the $108 pendants on the final day you can get them.
Also, people from the states have headed up here to try there luck before it reaches down to cali. As you know, Cali's got a huge population and I doubt 500 will be anywhere near enough for them.

It's an irony that Buddhism which preaches a simple life would bring in these extravagant statues to attract followers.

Organized religion is overrated in my opinion, it's nothing but politics taking advantage of our fear for death and our pain when losing our loved ones.

Do you know anything about Buddhism?

Simple life is one of the teachings of one of the more famous/revered Buddha's.

Anyway, not here to argue. Buddhism allows one to believe or have faith without condemming others. It's about reaching Nirvana. Not everybody will achieve it. You, sir, can believe in anything you want or not to believe at all. At least with Buddhism, nobody condemns one to hell for not having faith.

The condemnation is actually irrelevant, as only those believe in hell would feel condemned. If you don't believe in it, it's a non-issue. And most Christians are not out to condemn but rather, they try to help others reach heaven, something which they truly believe is real.

At the end of the day, Buddhism ultimately is another faith based belief. Instead of a hell or heaven, you have karma and reincarnation.

The mechanism is similar; in Christianity of course you have the burning hell, in Buddhism, if you do not follow the teaching, you suffer, you reincarnate into a lower cast, be it a dog or an ant. You never leave the endless cycle, you never find peace.

They are different yet also very similar. And they all like to work on the victims at their young age. Some call it religious studies, others call it child abuse.

You don't have to follow the "teachings". Some use the "teachings" as a guide. Some find the truth their own way. Reincarnation is just one of the teachings from one of the many Buddha's. The lower cast thing is........ anyway, not here to educate, argue, or have the last word. Like Burger King, "Have it Your Way."
