Hey guys,
I've recently had a change of heart and decided to switch over to business at SFU, hoping to go into finance. I've been told to take the Canadian Securities Course as the first step. Because I switched in late I may be only able to apply for 2 or 3 courses next term. So I thought I'd take this course as to not waste time. Can anybody in finance who has or has not taken this course tell me the benefits of this course and if it's really necessary? Thanks. :)

the course really won't teach you anything your undergrad doesn't cover.
what it really is your mutual funds license to trade. so if you plan to work in a bank (sales role) or investment firm you are required to hold either the CSC or IFIC. If you plan a career in finance then definitely doesn't hurt to take it. but it really is just an introductory designation to something like a CFP or CFA
in terms of it helping you in your career, its an expectation not a benefit.
and its fairly easy. Two exams only need 60% on each

I'm thinking of enrolling into the canadian securities course as well. I'm not taking any electives for my school year at sauder so balancing it shouldn't be too bad. Do you know if there are certain registration times to register or is it whenever?

its self study and then sign up for an in person exam.
1 year max to complete.

the study questions on the website are very generalized so if you do well on those questions, good job, but the questions on the exam are slightly harder. Know how to do most of the calculations like margin calls, TDS/GDS stuff. I can't remember whats exactly in there but you'll know what is important.

is there a time limit to which you can hold on to the certificate after you complete the course? I read on some other forum that the certificate has to be renewed after 3 years? Not 100% sure since the site doesn't specify. Anyone know?

its 3 years..you need X amount of CE credits every 3 years to continue on with the cert

Go grab a study guide from your local public library if you feel you need it..doesnt hurt..

yes, but if you work in the field and the CSC is a requirement of your job then your employer will provide you with the qualifications and renew for you.

side note, if u change companies and both require CSC be sure that it gets transferred so that you never miss renewing
