Not sure if this is a repost but it seems you can see a meteor shower at night. I've only seen one once a long time ago so thought this might be worth sharing.

McDonald Park in Abbotsford is a designated Dark Sky Park, situated mid-way between Abbotsford and Chilliwack. It's right next to Sumas Mountain, with the mountain like a huge wall, essentially blocking off the light of Abbotsford to the west, Chillwack to the east and Mission to the North. The views to the east, south & west are unobstructed, perfect for astronomy & astrophotography.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps?name=Mcdonald+Park&city=Abbotsford&state=BC&zipcode=V3G&country=CA&latitude=49.08963&longitude=-122.1367&geocode=ADDRESS&id=265655627

I'll be the guy in amongst the other photographers with a Canon 500mm lens. The other astronomy guys will have the big huge telescopes! :)

Just got back from a drive around South Langley. Lots of people are hanging out on their cars around the Pacific Truck Crossing and Campbell Valley Park, just sitting on their hoods and staring up at the sky. Sat and watched the sky for about twenty minutes by the new High Point Estates development at 200 St and 8 Ave (holy multi-million dollar homes!). Saw the three planets but no meteors. Oh well. Gonna hang out at Campbell Valley Park tomorrow night with a bunch of buddies and watch the real show. :D

I won't know until I get there, but any shutter speed over 30 seconds will show star movement, so stay below 30 seconds. I'd use f5.6 or f8 and adjust ISO & shutter speeds accordingly.

My experience, you're better off with a wide angle to catch a larger area of the sky... even at 1/min, the odds of one hitting the tiny area of sky you're getting with 500mm are pretty remote.

Heck, last time I went shooting meteors, I was shooting at 17mm and still consistently missing them - wherever I pointed my camera, they'd always come down in the opposite quadrant. Move the camera around, they'd be in the quadrant I'd just left. :flamemad:

Depends on your exposure time... I was trying anything from 2 minutes to 10 minutes... or until I saw too many of them going by out of the camera view and got frustrated and swung it around :)

That, my friend, is a plane. :p

Did you walk to the east of the main parking lot to where the Fraser Valley Astronomy Society members were with their huge-ass telescopes? Much better lighting conditions there, but the sky sucked last night due to the smokey haze. The area near the parking lot was crappy because there were too many cars coming and going, and too many stupid people using flashlights with white light.

That would be a satellite. If you go to a place where the sky is really dark, there will be at least one above you somewhere.

mcdonald park in abbotsford is a nice place for it, not too far, not busy, and once the park closes at around 10 or so, you can park outside the gate, walk back in and just lie down on the road and you have pretty much the whole sky to yourself. last year saw some super bright ones that go across the whole sky :ahwow:

Tried Burnaby Mountain. Stupid kids doing doughnuts in the parking lot almost hit me. I was ready to kill someone. :seriously:

Why didn't you just shake your cane at them?

Saw 4 from 2 to 3 am at Cypress Bowl lookout. Bit cloudy, but it cleared up for an hour or so.

Honestly the worst spot. Honger chicks everywhere screaming every time they see one.

Hitting up Abbotsford or Sea to sky/squamish tonight.

One of my old signatures from back in the dialup days...

"Wow, that lightning was really cl$){{.>@$!...
NO CARRIER

:lol

Supposed to be clear skies tonight so I'll try and post some meteor pictures tomorrow but in the meantime, here's what we were battling last night:

In the near distance:

Literally right above us. Picture got blown out unfortunately, but damn... this one let a little bit of wee out:

Honestly guys, take the extra 20 minutes to drive and head out to Dark Sky Park. Trust me, if you really want to see a ton of meteors without a bunch of random screams every time someone spots one, that's the place to be. Lots of guys also show up with their telescopes and most are more than happy to let you peer through them for a while.

Contemplating hitting up the lookout at Stave tomorrow night, if the weather clears...

Or a little closer to home, I've gone up to Pitt Lake for meteors before, it's pretty dark there.

Still thinkin Stave? If so what time?

The Perseids are generally visible from July 17 through August 24, with the peak being on August 11 & 12. So yeah, you still have a couple weeks to catch them, they just won't be as intense as the last couple nights.

Yeah I've been seeing at least 8 per hour for over a week every time I went out. Should still be quite active for the next few days. I'm actually thinking about heading out to the DSP right now. Insomnia has it's advantages.

I saw 5 last night. Had no idea there was even a meteor shower. Laid on a bench on top of the big grass hill at sfu by the terry fox statue and looking at the skies when BAM a meteor! Didnt realize it was a big thing til we got to Burnaby mountain and it was packed.

34 meteors in 45 minutes. notbad.tiff.png.exe Went out to http://goo.gl/maps/AmFRN, queued up some music and set up my chair facing pretty much right at Cassiopeia. In my first three minutes out there between 1:01am and 1:04am I saw 9 meteors and even though I know the Perseids tend to be streaky (no pun, srsly) that still set unrealistic expectations for the night. Didn't see a single thing for 5 minutes and then a few more meteors. For the next 40 minutes there would be what seemed like 5 minutes of nothing and then 6 or 7 in 5 minutes. I saw several pretty long and/or bright meteors but only one that wasn't just a streak but an obvious ball and trail (I hadn't actually seen one of those yet this season, although I was lucky enough to be out overnight during the 06/04 fireball which while not Russia-tier is still likely to be the brightest I'll see in my lifetime). All in all a good night's viewing, although my holy grail of stargazing still eludes me, although once again I was close - (I have still yet to see two satellites converge at the exact same point). They've been damn close a few times but I've never seen two perfectly align. Ah well. There's always next time.

Anyways, no pics of meteors but one of my setup:

On a semi-related topic: when we were driving up to Pitt Lake the other night for viewing, we happened to catch the ISS passing over. It's super-bright for a short time due to the solar panels being so reflective.

There's no charge or requirement of being a member to use Dark Sky Park is there? Someone I was talking to last year said you have to be a member of the astronomy association in order to go there. Couldn't find anything on their website.

I think there's a section that will be roped off that's for members only - so they have an area for the telescopes and stuff. The rest of the park is open to the public - it's just a city park.

Ahh okay, thanks gars :) From what I've read in this thread, a lot of the time they'll let you look through the telescope anyway. It's only 15 minutes from my bf's place, so I'm dragging him to go look this weekend lol.

you aren't really going to see anything in the middle of the city, particularly that close to downtown.

better chance going up cypress if you don't want to go that far.
