Star Wars on Blu-ray in 2011

As rumored, all six Star Wars movies will be released together on Blu-ray in 2011 for the 35th anniversary of the release of A New Hope. George Lucas personally announced the set on stage at the Celebration V event, and showed off a deleted scene from Return of the Jedi that will be included (embedded after the break.) While the "highest picture and audio quality" and extensive special features are promised, what won't make it to Blu-ray are the original versions of the movies; Lucas told the New York Times that only the special editions will be included, since restoring the original versions in high enough quality would cost too much. No word on price, release date or any plans to release the films individually, but if you can stand living in a world where Greedo shot first then this will certainly be on next year's shopping list.

The Star Wars franchise has made Lucas Films billions of dollars and he has the balls to say it would cost to much money to give the fans what they want?!?!

He will release them in super uber duper re-mastered edition in 2012/2013 and jack up the price.
You can quote me on that.

People also said that about the DVD releases a couple of years ago. The thing is if he does release the orginal edition he admits that his SE edited version sucks and he was wrong for changing it in the first place.

Hold on. The quality of the first three films aren't going to be HQ? What's the point of the Blu-ray then?
or
Is he saying they won't include the original three without HQ with the package?

They will all be in HD but the original 3 will not be remastered.

Massive bump.
They're out now, any decent reviews on them? IE are the first Tie Fighters in ep 4 surrounded by brown space, is Vaders saber pink and does Han shoot first, like in the fucked up DVD versions? Are the extra scenes from ep 1 in the correct spot on just in a pile in the Special Features section? I wanna buy it but I don't want the same kinda crap they sold on DVD.

google it boys... this bluray release is garbage and star wars heads are boycotting it. the original theatrical releases are NOT included instead you get the 2011 butchered (once again) versions. you can find the boxset for 80 online or at costco but personally i am holding off until we get the OG trilogy in its original form. if you are a fan of the newer star wars movies and it doesnt make you stick to the stomach that the original movies have been molested then this box set is for you.... may the force be with you and your money be in lucas' back pocket... noooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

 look at what George Lucas did to this scene
Darth Vader's 'Nooo!' in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (ACTUAL Blu-Ray Clip) - YouTube
just ruined a perfect scene....the turning of the head already conveyed Vader's message

I've still got the original versions of the original trilogy on VHS somewhere. I should simply digitize those instead of waiting for Lucasfilm to release a version that hasn't been butchered.

If by "PQ" You mean image quality, then yes, episode 1 is horrible. It aged worse than the originals. But episodes 2 and 3 are okay. I guess it's a good case study for how filming in digital can help special effects look better.

yeah pq/picture quality
it doesnt make sense that Episode 1 looks bad though considering ep 4 5 6look excellent
in that review the reviewer says that the image of episode 1 was softened on purpose by Lucas; he over used DNR (digital noise reduction which lessens grain but takes detail away too so it looks like it gets smudged)
Let's get the bad out of the way first. Namely, The Phantom Menace. Somehow it seems appropriate that the worst film in the series would have the worst picture quality of the set, but it's still disappointing. The main culprit here is digital noise reduction. Unlike the other two prequels, Episode I was shot on 35mm, but here it's been fairly strongly filtered so that grain is scrubbed out, giving a more video-ish appearance. I'm assuming this was probably done to give a sense of visual continuity to the prequels, but it frequently results in softened textures and smeared over detail.

Ep 1 was shot on film, the other two were done digitally. To me the worst part were the borders around people who were filmed in front of a green screen. You can see around the 'softer' edges (hair, etc) that there is a blurry fade where they cropped out the green screen and inserted the fake background. This doesn't happen as much with the other two films which were shot digitally.

can't say i'm surprised George Lucas released a butchered release for its blu-ray launch
since the series is hitting the big screens in 3D in the near future you can expect 3D blu-ray versions in a year or two :lol

I will definitely be skipping the 3D release of Ep 1, maybe 2, but will probably see Ep 3-6
Not for the 3D mind you, but to see it in theatres again. I was too young to see them originally (born in 79) but I did see the rereleases in 1996 or whenever they were.

did you see my post? GL killed that scene!
a lot of people thought it was funny when vader screamed out " noooooooooo " in revenge of the sith... and to add two more " noo's " in return of the jedi ... when Vader's turns from the dark side... what a joke
might as well give vader more lines..

IIRC, it's barely noticeable in Ep 2, and not noticeable at all in Ep 3.
Also, wait until you see Darth Maul... you can see the little globs of putty they used to attach the horns to his head.. it is so fucking cheesy, it looks like a ghetto ass Darth Maul Halloween costume

I don't care about the PQ on EP1
However, Jar Jar Binks....that's a different story. No Way in hell I will put myself through that again

When they embedded Hayden Christensen in scenes of the original trilogy, I already knew I was never going to buy anything but a set with the original theatrical cut and not Lucas' silly new, "improved" version.

Thanks for the heads up guys, that "Nooo" by Vader in ep 6 just killed it for me. I'll stick to my copies of the fan-repaired DVD's (The guy brought them back to the theatrical release as best he could, only thing he couldn't do was remove Hayden) and the fan-extended ep1-3 (another guy put all the deleted scenes in their correct places, instead of just a pile of stuff in the special features). Maybe a fan will eventually fix these blu-rays, and we can actually enjoy them.
