Expired Passport Question

Hey guys,
My friend is asking me to goto Seattle with him tomorrow and I checked my passport and realized it is expired (since May). Now I know I won't be able to renew it by tomorrow but would I still be able to gain entry by bringing along my birth certificate as well? I was told by a friend that it should be fine, though I'm a bit skeptical. Just don't want to have to deal with the problems.
Can anyone give me a definitive answer?
Thanks!

It'll be up to the discretion of the border guard.

You may very well get turned away at the boarder.
You can get a renewal in 24 hours if you go to the passport office. It costs an extra $60 to rush it. I guess it depends how badly you want to go down and how much of a pain in the ass it would be if you tried and got turned away.
Do note. If you do get turned away for any reason at all, the boarder guard can also flag this on your file, increasing your chances of future ID checks and searches.
I got stopped once when I was trying to take my daughter down. I have complete custody of her so I don't need anyone's permission to take her any where but I didn't have the paper work to say so. Now every friggen time I try and take her across I'm asked for it to the point where I gave up and got her a passport (even though you don't need one if you're under 21).

The law is by land if you're ove 21 (or maybe 18) you need a valid passport OR an enhanced drivers liscence OR a nexus pass. If travelling by air or sea a passport or Nexus pass are the only acceptable identification regardless of age.

You'll be fine my passport expired so long ago the picture inside is when I was like 9 LOL I asked the same question before a couple months back I think you will be ok. I even got in last month with only my drivers license haha I was wish a girl though and she did most if the talking but on the way back thus lady was kinda pissed I got into the states.
Anyways the time I got in with my expired passport the guy told me to make sure that I get it changed for the summer bc there inforcing new rules but they say that every time and that wouldn't really explain how I got in with my drivers license the last time.............

If I were you I would not take any chances. It's not going to be worth it if things go bad. Honestly, is it someone's funeral or wedding? If not, take the time and get an enhanced driver's license, at least.
As mentioned, if you already have a passport that is expired, it won't take long to get a new one at the passport office.

I got mine in a week. Renewed 2 weeks ago and received it last week. Try going to the Richmond location. Super fast! :)

Bring lots of other ID's? BCID, BCDL, Birth Certificate, SIN Card.. But I doubt they'll let you pass unless the border agent isn't super strict.

I think it's best you don't go, to be honest.
I went through the Peace Arch border crossing yesterday. There is only ONE lane and several booths open on the new CBP building. They were fairly quick but if you and your friends get turned around, chances are they will be pretty upset.
I went to US recently just by showing the new driver's license. That's really all it took.

just a reminder - to get an urgent passport made (1hr to 24hrs service), you most likely need to have a valid reason of travel. This includes flight ticket, letter from a hospital, letter from receiving party etc... Although it is not required to do so, it is up to the discretion of the passport officer to issue you an urgent renewal/application.
Travel to the United States by land, sea, and air requires one of the following:
Valid Passport (3 months validity remaining from date of entry recommended, if not required) with applicable Visas if required.
-or-
Enhanced Drivers' License
Birth certificate IS NO LONGER A VALID TRAVEL DOCUMENT FOR ENTRY INTO THE UNITED STATES
OP I suggest you get a new passport. Renewal can be done fairly easily. There is no longer a need to get your doctor to sign it, as the renewel application requires no guarantor, only 2 references.
You can get the form online at www.pptc.gc.ca

my passport was expired and somehow i got thru..i guess they didnt check properly
but when getting your passport renewed, i find it kinda fucked up how if you choose to pick up your passport, you have to pay money to get it but to get it mailed to your house, you don't. Had a relative get theirs done the same time as mines and they went to pick up theirs while i got mines mailed 2 days earlier lol

Are you sure about that? I just looked at http://www.pptc.gc.ca/cdn/section6.aspx?lang=eng which talks about fees, and it doesn't mention anything of that sort.

hmmm...well i had mines done about a month ago and when i asked they said you had to pay.
Sounds like here (http://www.ppt.gc.ca/support/faq.aspx?lang=eng&id=04454) it says it's good for up to one year.
To be honest, if it's not something you HAVE to go to, I wouldn't go. It would REALLY suck if they denied you entry and you both had to turn back. I know I'd be pissed I was traveling with someone who had expired docs and got turned around after waiting an hour in line.

Yes, under certain circumstances you had to pay a fee for pick-up (Express or Urgent... at least when I was still working there). Trust me - it takes a WHOLE LOT MORE effort to get the thing prepped for pick-up rather than for a mail delivery by the almighty Canada Post. Perhaps too many people chose the pick-up option that they decided to charge a fee, because it does take quite a bit more of time.

The passport is good for ID (going to bars, buying booze etc...), but not valid for use as a travel document to the United States (or anywhere else in the world actually)

I had my passport made in 1 hour when I told the guy that I needed to get a visa made and I was leaving for vietnam in 3 weeks. Didn't even have to pay extra.

That FAQ question applies to applying for an application for a passport and whether or not an expired one can be used as a document to support your identity.

Yeah, when I found that out, I was like why the fuck would I pay to drive out there to Surrey again, of all places, to pick it up. Canada Post courier method is faster and at no extra cost. My passport and my son's passport came in just over one week. My daughter's arrived in three fricken days. What's with that?

Put yourself in the passport guy's shoes. Wouldn't you process the applications of all the hot chicks first? Your photo is part of the application... :p

*ahem* It actually took longer :D
you'd be surprised though, how widely the degree of makeup on chicks vary... from 0 to absolute cakeface and everything in between
