Wow, I'm not sure how old most of you are, but the PNE parade decades ago was huge. It stretched from Burrard and Georgia area to Hasings and Clarke.

It was always televised and people lined the streets and buildings to watch it. If they had such an event nowadays, the clean up would take two weeks.

Everyone loves a parade.

With that in mind, organizers of the annual PNE have been planning since 2003 for a giant parade to celebrate the fair's 100th anniversary.

About $500,000 has been spent on the extravaganza that starts Friday at 7 p.m. in Stanley Park and winds down Beach Avenue, ending at Sunset Beach in Vancouver's West End.

The kickoff for the annual PNE is a throwback to the event's heyday, when a parade was held each year to mark the opening of the late-August festivities.

The last PNE parade was in 1995, and PNE organizers say tonight's free parade is a one-shot deal.

"We have been planning this parade for a long time," says PNE president and CEO Mike McDaniel.

"With more than 2,000 participants and 12 giant parade balloons similar to those seen in the Macy's parade in New York City, this is going to be a spectacular night," he adds.

McDaniel points out that while organizers want to celebrate the fair's history, the parade will have a contemporary "Disney-esque style" complete with a soundtrack.

"People have these incredible memories of the PNE parade," says McDaniel. "But this is not going to be like 25 years ago."

Still, given that it's a historic summer for the PNE, the floats and participants will pay tribute to the memorable events that have taken place at the fair.

This year's a bit different since it's PNE's 100th Anniversary. Bryan Adamns and the Beach boys will open for the PNE and there will be a very special Parade that starts from Stanley park. There's many more events and attractions at the PNE. I for one will definitely attend this years as it's a bit different than many others.

And because Bryan Adams and the Beach Boys are performing on the opening day, the free admission before noon (that's typically offered on day 1) is moved to Sunday, August 22nd.

If it's anything like last year, yes. The line moves fast. Don't worry about not being able to get in. I suspect people line up early so they can get to the $3 charity pancake breakfast, get tickets to the shows, etc.

Just got back from a day at the PNE. Same old stuff, but a good experience nonetheless. My favourite free moment was at the News 1130 booth. You get to play announcer and have the session e-mailed to you. I had a bit of fun, but didn't go the nine yards. I stated my name as 89blkcivic from revscene. I was going to say a few funny things that included the use of El Bastardo, Skinny Pup, and Vansterdamn, but decided not to. I just read out the script they give you. They won't play it on air or anything, but they will send you the session for kicks. It has the familiar music background playing as you make the announcements.

I wanted to upload the mp3 file on RS, but didn't know how.

I dare any of you to do a funny revscene related newscast and upload it here. It's free and it is fun.

The other fun free thing was at the BC Sports Hall of Fame. You get to create a baseball, hockey, basketball, etc. card with your picture and stats, and get it e-mailed to you.

If any of you are into cotton candy, there's a place just inside the Pacific Coliseum main doors. One BUCK each!! Only thing is, they don't have bags. You frugal Asians need to bring your own bags so you can take it home to your families. They're not that big, but worth it for a buck.

One thing to avoid. The motorsport show called "On the Edge." Wow, that was one lame show. Maybe it was me, but it was a total waste of my time.

Lumberjack show was the same as previous years, maybe smaller.

Oh, I got free parking by the elementary school a block away from Hastings. Went at around 8:45 am.

Apparently the trick is to throw two at the same time. That way, if the bottom ring hits the correct part of a bottle and deflects upwards, the upper ring will prevent it from flying away, sending it back down.

Throw it with backspin and then you just need to practice with the amount of height and distance you throw to hit closest to the bottom of the backboard without hitting the foul zone. You're only allowed to throw one ring at a time (its one of the rules). You can sneak a couple by if they are busy, but if they see it, they won't award you your prize.

The legit way to do it is to throw the ring at a approx 45 degree angle and keep it low flying. If you try to bomb one down from high up, it'll just bounce off. You want to throw a low flying one and hope to catch the top of the bottle, and the ring will spin around the neck of the bottle instead of bouncing off. Its still bloody hard, though.

No trick, all practice. Play several times till the ball just barely creeeeeps over the hump. If you start off throwing light, just keep going, progressively harder - eventually you find the right touch. IIRC that game only costs $1/throw - I usually start winning after 5 throws.

i just got back from pne.. 5$ after 9pm awesome if ur baked or buzzing! LOL

went to the beer garden tonight and LOLLLLLLLLL! as soon as i got inside and waited for the beer line i saw a native chick fight that lasted for 5 minutes, tried to video record but my phone ran out of memory :( i did manage to cut the line during the fight :)
