hockey goalie question: What's a "cheater bar" ?

I was reading on some hockey forums talking about a "cheater bar" in goalie trappers.
But I can't find a picture or any explanation of what it is and what it does.
Any help??

Cheaper bar is the webbing from the outside of the thumb that runs down to the padding on the wrist.
Take a look at your hand with the palm facing you. With the fingers open, ie number 5, you will see how the thumb sticks out.
Hope this helps. If you still don't get it, then look at the old school goalie gloves from the late 70's and compare them to the gloves today.
What it does, well it makes the glove bigger and the bigger surface area means less opening for the pick to squeeze through. Same deal with the debate about goalies and their bigger pads/chest protector.

Damn I didn't know such a thing existed. I only knew about the reinforced palm which doesn't really give you any advantage

It's a small piece that gives additional coverage between the wrist pad and thumb. The cheater adds a little blocking space to ensure that less pucks go by.

Actually, that bar serves no protection, just added material to make the glove bigger.
In your example, it is hard plastic covered by material, but in some of the older gloves, it had some netting.

i said it was protection bc its hard and is part of the glove, not to actually protect a specific part of your hand.wrist frm being hurt.... show me a pic of it made out of webbing.. i dont think i have ever seen one that was webbing the same material as the pocket.

HAHA... I think protection means it protects a body part from harm... :p

I'll try to find a better pic, but basically we are talking about gloves from the 80's. All the 90's and newer gloves use the full plastic that you are refering to.

icic
but to be devils advocate again.. if goalie pads were used for protection then they would only be about 5 inches wide.. but they are 11 now... but we still call it leg protection :):)
