$430 is indeed very good for 2 terms, I was paying around $700~800 for two terms of parking back then.

ok, i guess they changed their policies. Back a few years ago parking passes for winter is for 2 terms. I'm really feeling old.

Anyways, that's some crazy taxes right there. Time to sell ur Upass & recover some of that cost.

fck these ridiculous prices. My last semester at SFU I went with no pass and only got a warning once. Just need to find a good spot. There was one time when I parked beside a Corolla. When I got back, that corolla had a ticket while I didn't lol

taxes in vancouver are getting way out of control..

I know it's for education, health care, etc. etc.

but honestly.. too much of our tax money is going into greedy ppl pockets and waste.

ex.. how much money has been spent into downtown east side? Yet, we see no improvement. We need a better solution than just keep dumping tax money into there.

so while this thread is up here, anyone know how the legal case against UBC towing cars is going? i heard they cant tow your car unless it is illegally parked?

so if my car is in a spot, but meter's run out, they're not allowed to tow my car?

I believe it's 3 parking tickets, then you get towed. They tow your car to health parkade so if you're hardcore enough, you can go take your car back by climbing over the fence and waiting till the guard leaves.

They will tow your car the next time you park without a valid ticket. The car will be held at the impound lot beside Health Science Parkade. You will have to pay the towing fee and all the past tickets. They will not release your car until you do that.

The whole game about UBC and the Courts have been thrown out. UBC will ticket and tow you. They also won't give you your car back unless you pay off your debt.

SERIOUSLY! It costs this much to park at these schools?!
Park a couple blocks away for free and ride the bus in!

Maybe I'm getting old, but I think this thread needs some perspective...

If you can afford to pay 5K+ a year in tuition, I think a few hundred bucks a year for a parking pass should be affordable. I don't have any sympathy if you can afford to drive to school, pay tuition, and enjoy all of the other perks of student life. Moreover, instead of complaining about parking rates, I would complain more about the declining quality of the education, the corporatization of the campus with no tangible benefits to the students, and the diminishing value of a bachelor's degree before complaining about a couple hundred bucks. Just sayin'.

I took the #25 to and from campus 5 days a week for 5 years which amounted to 2 hours of my time per day. Pay up or get on the bus.

Gee.Tee.Ar
09-03-2010, 11:30 AM
^ its not a few hundred bucks... its almost 1000. In 4 years that's almost a full year of tuition already. How is that affordable? Probably costs as much as the average university students car lol...

a lot of university students who can afford to park drive really nice cars: 3 series, m3, c series, 350z, g35, porsche, etc. etc.

Yeh it makes sense if they can afford that much to park then they probably have a nice car. Therefore the parking lots are full of nice cars. They are not the ones complaining

Parking is not supposed to be affordable for the average student. Driving to school is a privilege, not a right.

Sounds like things haven't changed one bit since I was there.

Yes, I know what the thread is about, but my point was that if you can afford to drive to school, you can afford a few extra bucks. All parking lots, not just UBC's, are subject to a double tax.

On a side note, before HST, I was theoretically double-taxed on everything else via the PST.

if you go on the ubc parking website.

"starting jan 2010, parking tax will increase from 7% to 35%"

Last year I paid $710 tax included for 2 parkade pass,

this year, $821.50 tax included for 1 parkade pass.

WTF

no no thats just 2 taxes, the HST on the parking tax would be like putting PST on your GST
