Hey so the new ipods/apple tvs are all being shown today.

The only thing I'm interested in is the new ipod touch. Retina display, front and back camera (front for face time, back for hd video), and its suppose to be thinner. However it's for 250$ cad, was originally planning to buy one for my girlfriend but at this point i might as well get something else. I know nit's cheaper then when the ipod touch first came out, but that's a 50$ increase from the current 8gb model. thoughts? If there's already a thread just merge this one into it or close this one didn't find one

The thing I don't like about apple tv is the fact that you never really purchase movies. Yes it's 4.99(us) to rent a hd movie (most likely 720p) which is cheap but you're not given an option to ever buy a movie.

It isn't even just that either. No 1080p, no storage/external HD support, crap format support, and LESS features than literally every media player that's been out for the past 1-2 years. Unless you're absolutely tied to iTunes, there's no reason at all to buy the Apple TV over the WD TV, Patriot Box, Asus O!Play, Boxee, etc. Especially since the others cost the same as the Apple TV.

The Apple TV has always been the litmus test to find out if someone is an Apple fanboy. No one would ever be retarded enough to buy one.

you also need to consider if the difference you notice is a result of resolution or is it due to contrast/colour/black levels etc (my gripe about the retina display is people are harping about the resolution and as far as i know that shouldn't be discernible based on its size and from reading reviews that seems to be the general consensus)

The 3GS had a shitty screen to begin with, so the iphone 4 is a huge improvement over it. But other phones have been huge improvements over the 3GS before it, and Samsung's newest phones have even better screens than the iphone 4.

You can really tell a difference when you zoom in on individual letters in text. The lines are crisper and clearer than previous models.

I got an iTouch 3g and ip4 recently. Personally, I notice a huge difference when reading webpages, emails, and playing games like NOVA.

The reason some stuff might not be "as sharp/clear" is because they are still running on old icons or not "updated for retina display". One good example is WeatherEye, it looks ok on my iTouch but blurry on my ip4 (kinda like an up-converted dvd on your big 1080p LCD TV).

Everybody have a different monitor with different brightness contrast setting etc.

Apple called it the retina display for a reason, it is something you have to experience with your own eyes.

For some the difference is phenonomen for other its meh. just like some ppl still go meh when they are show 1080p vs 720p

i have the iphone 4 and i have to say no many people were wow by the screen on first viewing. They are like, whats the big deal. After actually USING it playing games. viewing pictures, app, surfing and than going back to the 3gs/3g/2g watever. Most of them they notice how inferior the previous screens were.

imo though, apple sacrifice contrast for amazing clarity

Regardless, most people who have seen and tested the screens said there is a significant difference in quality. Some have said they see no diffference. The explanation is simple. Either they are looking at some type of content where the resolution is not apparent or they have a problem with their eyes.

Maybe Apple should release a Braile Display.

People have posted online that they have no idea where Apple got their numbers from. the Nintendo DS has sold over 132 Million units, compared to the iOS devices which have only had around 120 Million sold - and only a portion of those are iPod Touch.

Not denying that the iOS devices are great for playing casual games, but they are nowhere near the DS yet in portable gaming.

most phones with 480 x 320 screens have to be held at up to 2 feet away before a person with average vision can no longer differentiate the pixels of the display.

Closest distance for pixel perception with average* vision:
iPhone 4 - 10.43"
Droid - 12.99"
Droid X: 15.10"
HTC EVO - 15.85"
iPhone 3Gs -20.86"

So if the average viewing distance for a normal user is at about 18'' doesn't it mean that the IPhone 4 have a slightly better screen and isn't as magical as all you guys say? I have never said that the iphone 4 screen isn't better, I did said i was unimpressed by the screen due to the huge hype around it. Is it wrong to be underwhelmed by something? Come on, you knew this post was coming. Here we have a prototype Nokia E7 and its new 4-inch, 640x360 pixel Clear Black Display pitted again the iPhone 4's 3.5-inch 960x640 pixel Retina display. To our eyes, the iPhone 4 display has a noticeable blue warmth and wasn't as vibrant or bright as the CBD. The CBD, however, did come across a bit oversatured (just look at those red "breaking news" bars), but hey, it's AMOLED. It certainly looks just as good as the Galaxy S' Super AMOLED. We'll have to see how the polarized layer on the CBD affects sunlight viewing. More on that later. Until then, play nice dear readers.

I'm totally not into this sort of stuff but my GF is and she wants a 32gig Ipod Touch 4 (?). She said she wants to get it on her own since it's kind of pricey but it beats actually looking for a gift for her upcoming birthday.

Can you guys suggest either something better or where the best place to buy this would be (customer service/warranty)? Mostly going to be used for music, games and internet (I guess where wifi is available?)

People who can't see the difference need to get their eyes checked. I now know this as fact after showing my iPhone to co-workers and noticing a very interesting coincidence.

I work on cars. Often we need to try and find a part number off a part that came off the car. The number is often stamped into a piece of metal, and after time goes by the numbers get rubbed off or covered in rust. Usually you try to clean the part to make the numbers more visible. And then the inevitable happens: the guys at work who can't make out the part number always bring it to me (or other co-workers) to try and read the number.

Well, the exact same people who have troubling reading fine print at work are the same ones who looked at my iPhone and didn't notice any difference. The people who are always getting asked "hey can you read what this says" are the ones who noticed the difference right away.


Sorry to shit on you guys who can't see the difference, but the fact is your eyes aren't as good. I'd put hard cash in a bet that standing in front of an eye chart the people who see a difference are also the ones who can read further down the chart than the ones who can't.

If you have an iPhone 4 handy, go to www.apple.com/ca/iphone. It might also still be in the bookmarks. Now go to the bottom of the page where there are 4 small text areas with pictures under them. See if you can read them without zooming or altering the page in any way. I, for one, can read them without having to squint or hold the phone 2" from my face. I can also read all the menu buttons on the top of the page. On my 3G this is impossible no matter how close I get to the screen. I can barely make out the bold faced titles, let alone trying to read the actual fuzz errr text.

No half-blind motherfucker is going to tell me there's no difference. Keep living in denial.

There's a difference. I've seen the new iPhone before and it's clearer and sharper compared to my friend's 3GS held at the same distance.

Input the specs of the Iphone 4 (960x640 500 lumens@max brightness) and it will tell you that you need to have the phone at MAX 5" to meet THX Specs; 10" for "Visual Acuity" from your face if you have 20/20 vision (Yes you can input your lvl of eyesight into the calculator) to be able to discern the RESOLUTION and yes if you had say 20/10 vision you would be able to discern the resolution benefits further away for Visual Acuity it would extend to 21.8" (much closer than an "arms length" unless you were a midget) having said this though i'll re-iterate resolution ≠ quality
