Most of those body panels are probably scraps from other cars in order to disguise the test mule. It will not be this ugly.

yeah probably, but the shape of the car's side profile looks awkward:lol i like the front though =P

It reminds me in some ways of the Subaru SVX. Even the strange window arrangements

^ Yeah the design is definitely not the same as the SVX. But it seems like they are going in the same "quirky" direction as the SVX.

the actual car would not look like that..

just using random body parts to develop the chassis itself...

Rear looks a lot like a VW Corrado...but it's probably slapped together from other cars as a mule.

why is it that we do not see running prototypes of the ft-86? maybe i missed them but all the ft-86's that i've seen are static displays at auto shows, none of which have ever had an open hood to show this new DI boxer engine... have they left it to subaru to do all the drivetrain development work using these fugly test mules?

if this is the subaru version....i guess the toyota version will look better because i dont see it getting any worse. I really hope its a real coupe unlike the rx8.

DiiCii
09-04-2010, 10:49 PM
^ there's 2 versions? i thought they both(subaru & toyota) collaborated to create this? :S
also, my guess on the "vw corrado" body style is probably related to the ae86. cause i've read from a while ago and forgot where, that toyota's making a "new ae86" with the help of subaru =P i could be wrong though, probably am:lol

i'd actually be HAPPIER if they did a production re run of those limited 22B impreza STi's...

screw the so called new (crappier) designs.

i mean back in the 90's Nissan USA did an in house re runs of datsun 240Z's... using new old stock parts to make quite a few 240Z's and sell them for 20k+ a pop..

The car is you see here is heavily disguised, if not simply slapped together with body work out of the parts bin. I'll guarantee the car will look a lot different once it's officially revealed.

i totally agree with the toyota front look better than the subbie, but i kinda like the subbie's back kinda looks like a cross between subaru and genisis coupe.

i remember reading a few months back that the subaru version may not make it to north america because cost restraints make awd too expensive, and a 2wd subaru dosen't fit in the awd profile subaru promotes here?

If it comes, the Subaru. Why would you buy a Toyota with a Subaru engine when you can get a Subaru with a Subaru engine?

I don't get this car. The AE86 was amazing in every right. Simple, light, peppy and cheap. When ever these come out (Subaru and/or Toyota) will not be remotely similar at all. I have only driven (gave it the beans, cornered hard, braked hard etc = driven) a Subaru once, and while fast, it didn't seem peppy. Ranting a bit I guess but I think Toyota is going to drop the ball. How hard is it to make a reasonable powered I6 like before or a high reving 4cly like Honda?

here's the news feed from ft-86 forum...rumours are rumours but here they are:

Subaru FT-86 Version Could Have 60hp More Than Toyota FT-86

A new report coming from Autocar claims that the Subaru version of the FT-86 version could be powered by up to 60 horsepowers more than the Toyota FT-86. How does this compute?

Well, the Subaru version is speculated to feature a version of the Impreza STi’s turbocharged motor with approximately 260hp, compared to the FT-86’s retuned Subaru 2.0L flat four motor good for approximately 200hp.

See INSIDE for the full details of this bit of news/rumor, and to discuss.

a flat four in a toyota... seriously guys.

why not a high revving 4cyl. its not like toyota doesnt have the resourses to develop one. they do have yamaha after all...

2.0, DOHC, VVTi, 16V or even 20V, four throttle set up w/ drive by wire.

how hard is that..?

It's not hard, just not as cost-efficient as using a motor that's already there. Plus they can have a lower-priced coupe from Toyota and more premium coupe with the Subaru version. Obviously if there is not a huge price difference then the Subaru will pillage sales.
