I went to my first calculus class at langara today and barely understood anything or the examples or the questions. The teacher expected us to know alot from pre calculus. But on the langara requirements page it didnt say anything about that it just said you need an A in math 12 ( I have 95% in math 12)

Do you guys think I should stick to the class or drop it for the pre calc class(thats currently full)? Another anoying thing is in math 12 they taught us so much with graphing calculators and now I can barely do anything with out them.

lol. I did the long path of 1152->1170->1174. You might need perfected pre calc to do better at calc. Who's your teacher?

Teacher is abu bakare. I could barely keep up today.

If you just want a c/ passing mark, stick with it. Only math 1152 is transferable to ubc/sfu whereas you need both 1170 AND 1171 (not 1173 or 1174) to transfer to ubc.

That guy? He sucks. Best way to improve marks at Langara is to scout out your profs and choose best ones. There are some retarded ones you have to watch out for.

Pre-calc is just basics, but not key concepts. A strong understanding helps you a bit, but it's only like 1-10% of the course. Rest is just calculus.

^ i thought i read it was 1170 + 1171 for normal calc to transfer and 1170 + 1174 for business calc to transfer into commerce @ ubc. so assuming op is in/going to commerce, it should be transferable.

No. It has to be 1171. There are substitutes for 1171, but they won't transfer with 1170. So you won't get credit for 1170 unless you take 1171.

fmmllllllllllll i took 1170 + 1174, cause it said business calc.... and i asked the counselor, and shes like, yup looks good to me for transferring.

Well, sfu accepts both. It's just that according to bc transferguide, it says 1171 for ubc. Counselor's are not that knowledgable about the transfer process.....

Guess ill just have to go to sfu now..

There is another option.....associate's degree. If you fullfill the requirements, all 60 credits transfer.

Do you happen to have a link to more info, or elaborate a bit for me? tia

You might want to double check in ubc. I know it works for arts, not sure about business?

^ oh that is actually the exact course plan i have been taking lol

All of the following:
ECON 1220, 1221
ENGL 1127 or 1128
ENGL 1129 or 1130 or 1140
FMGT 2293, 2294
MATH 1174*
STAT 1181
*(MATH 1173/1183 or 1171 are allowable substitutes for MATH 1174. )

And to take 1171/1174 you need 1170. So thats where I got 1170 + 1174.

I don't know if it's the same at Langara but when I took pre-calc at sfu, it was nearly identical to math 12.

It is, but at Langara they teach you how to do it without a graphing calculator. Which is a lot better.

my teacher refers to pre-calc as math 12... so it could be what she is referring to?

OT but you will likely never use this shit ever again. Just saying.

unless you go into applied sciences, electronics, they show up everywhere, and are applicable to everything. lol.

ditto. i was forced to take precal in sfu because my math 12 grade wasn't sufficient. i ended up getting a A since it was pretty much like doing math 12 over again. its not a hard class at all and i'm not a math guy so that says a lot. also, i just learned from the textbook which was clearer than the prof.

In my opinion, math and calc are like 2 different things. However, you will need to know math 12 to understand calc.

Calc, is like starting math all over agian, you need to keep building the blocks. Limits ---> derivatives etc.

I had to take pre-calc. first before taking calculus I cuz I didn't do that well in Math 12

I found out that pre-calc. was just like Math 12. It was all about functions. Then when I passed that and took Calculus I, I found it much easier to understand that pre-calc.

Its a whole new concept tho, but you should be able to pick it up in no time. Its just all just differentiations, limits..etc.
