I am using a top-of-the-line router though. It's possible it's a router problem?... Unless you're doing direct-connect of course.
I have a buddy in Richmond who has the exact same plan as I have but he suffers with slower speeds and performances. Location can also be a possible factor.

you are getting that speed for shaw "high speed" non extreme and you are saying it's not great? high speed non extreme is only 7.5mb/s download 512kb/s upload.. you are getting more than what you paid for and you are saying it's not too great? you get what you paid for..
@peturbo call shaw and get them to check ur router statistic.. sounds like ur modem is flapping.. but that shouldn't happen even if there's lots of traffic going on.
and for ppl that are experiencing slow speed or unstable speed. make sure if you have a media streaming client on ur computer.. check and see if it's running in the background.. ex pplive even if you exit the program.. it's terminal program is still running in the background uploading data constantly.. the faster your upload speed.. the slower ur download speed :)

What would I be looking for in my router statistics if this was the case?
I checked ncix/bestbuy link that you posted, dlink N300 is no longer on sale for $50. I'm assuming an old router will choke your net speeds?

Anyone's internet extremely slow? Southeast Van.

i am having serious enough speed issues. I am on the extreme and i went to http://speedtest.shaw.ca and my average dl is 2.82 mbps.. with a 30 ms ping and .9 upload. that's with windows running normally. I try the same thing in windows safe mode with networking enabled and it jumps up to 10mbps. then i used my macbook pro (MAC OSX) and it jumps up to 17mbps. i am like wtf...! then i dual boot into windows on my macbook pro and same story as the other computers.
anyone have any idea? on one of the computers i tried it on was just reformatted too and got 10mbps in windows safe mode with networking but in normal windows mode the connection speed drops. I have nothing running except Kaspersky AV.
I've done the tests with every computer connected directly to the cable modem and also connect through a router with is then connected to the cable modem.
Then I spoke to shaw and he said that he will escalate my situation to the techs but cannot guarantee they will do anything since I am getting optimum results in safe mode on the shaw speedtest site.
Please note that I am getting good results with speedtest website:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1006131805.png
But I don't trust these results. I don't think they are accurate at all. My internet was fast up until a week or so ago? I know it could be the other side too but I spend a lot of time on the computer so it can't be every site is slow right?
Anyways, I do have a seperate issue that I would like help or an opinion on. I play a lot of Starcraft 2 and I usually never lag but yes ..I've been lagging a lot lately. Both my sister and I do. and no.. no pictures of her.. lol. I have 2 IPs from shaw how can I take advantage of that? I got 2 routers(DGL 4500 and a DIR 615), a bunch of computers, a super old hub, and a switch. I am currently only using the DGL 4500 router that's it. I think if I can get my sisters computer on a different ip and mine on another it would solve the problem of port forwarding for both of us. (yes i already set the port forwarding but I think it only works well with one computer?)
SORRY FOR THE LONG READ WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP! :D

had those random intermittent drops a few nights ago. annoying as hell cause you'd disconnect from the net for a few seconds but it'd be enough to drop you from the game.

if you have a connection thats capable of 30mbps, and you're using some cheap $30 router, that may be the cause of alot of your slowdowns. Depending on a few factors, if you have more then 2-3 people using computers, or one computer with unlimited connection torrents running, you'll crumple most cheap consumer routers.
I used to run torrents on a dlink DIR-655 and i could bring it to a crawl fairly easily. I switched to a cisco 1841 i picked up on craigslist for cheap and i can't bring its performance down even if i try.
Cisco 2621XM routers are also fairly good if you have space for it, and can read a few online tutorials on how to properly set it up for home use. Can usually find them online for less than $100, i've set a couple up for friends who do alot of torrenting and they have no complaints.
I switched to a Netgear WNR3500L with DD-WRT and my internet speed went up exponentially. I just pay for Shaw Regular and get 27-29 Mb/s.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1006964799.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
My WRT54G with the recommended stable DD-WRT would only pull 14MB/s.
Upload is a different story. It's capped at 0.95 MB/s no matter what.
A better real world test is to download something from a fast server.
IE. Apple or Nvidia. I can download iTunes at an average speed of 2.5MB/sec and peak at 3 MB/sec.

Are you connected through an ethernet cable or through WiFi? If you're connected through WiFi, may I ask what type of wireless adapter are you using for your computer (G or N)?
Thanks
I use a MacBook, it has wifi-N and gigabit ethernet.
The above test was done with wifi-N, which is what I use 95% of the time.

That might be true.
Allow me to restate my point.
Given the same internet speeds, with tests done back to back on the same day.
New router, WNR3500L, can achieve 27-29MB/sec.
The old router, WRT54G, can only achieve 14-15MB/sec.
This means picking a good router and good firmware will affect the speeds your ISP is allowing you to use.

the only thing that will affect the maximum speed as allotted to you by your ISP is the size of your wallet.

the only thing that will affect the maximum speed as allotted to you by your ISP is the size of your wallet.
If your router is a bottleneck, then you will never be able to use the maximum speed from your ISP, no matter how much you pay.
Perfect example would be the new Gigabit network from Shaw. If your router has a 100 Mbit WAN port and you use wifi-G, you would never see gigabit speeds. (assuming all other external factors offer uploads at such speeds.)
In this case you are paying through your nose for internet, but no matter how much you pay it doesn't matter because your router is the bottleneck.
Jeremy617
10-27-2010, 01:02 PM
right, if your isp is feeding you 30mbit and your router is only capable of 15mbit, lowest wins.
but it doesn't technically affect what the ISP is giving you, like you implied. they will always be feeding you what you pay for regardless if you are able to use it or not.

One thing to note though, with your new router, you're probably connecting through N, while on your old router you're connecting through G.
I'm debating whether to switch to a N-router or not. I've been reading articles on SmallNetBuilder, and it seems that N-router doesn't increase the speed/distance (ie. you'll be able to connect at a farther distance with a N-router, but speed between a N-router and G-router would be roughly the same at X meter [X is the distance where you can still connect to G])

Trying to download something at the moment and the transfer speeds will cycle up to 200-300kB/s, and then down 0.5kB/s every minute or so.

i've read your post like 5 times and i still can't figure out what you're talking about.
if you're connected to your router using N, then its running at N speeds.
why would a laptop NIC identify a connection as N if the router was only negotiating a link at G speeds?

If your router is only capable of sending out G signals, even if you have a wireless N adapter, you will still only connect via G signal.
Since he said he was using WRT54G (which I'm also using), regardless of having a wireless N adapter or not, he will only receive G speed.

ah didn't realize you were comparing it to the old router. clearer with the edit.
True, however G is still rated 54mbit, shouldn't be a bottleneck unless the signal strength is less than stellar.

Yea, I used to get 20-25 Megabits before on extreme-i too.
Earlier today I was getting around 8 Mb. But its back to 16 Mb, which is around what extreme-i is supposed to be getting.

Lol came here just to make a post about shaw, for the last like 3 weeks my extreme -I has been garbage
Does anyone know If there is a newer modem than the surfboard SB5101?
Currently I'm using that modem with a Dlink DIR-655

There are different modems. The SB5101 is a "Docsis 2" modem.
There is a faster "Docsis 3.0" modem, which Shaw gives out for for Warp and Nitro. The difference is the speed capability of the modem.
Even with Extreme internet the bottleneck is set by Shaw, not the SB5101.
More info for cable modem standards:

My apologies. My router is actually FAR from the top-of-the-line. But nonetheless, GREAT!

Bought this from Best Buy about a week ago for $50. If I'm not mistaken, FutureShop and NCIX is still selling this for that price until now. Lag-free Halo Reach/Tekken 6/Super Street Fighter IV/Modern Warfare 2 all the way ever since I made this purchase (mostly because of my brand new Shaw upgrade as well). Highly recommended. Initial installation was a breeze, to say the least! If you guys are looking to upgrade your routers, this is the way to go.
i bought a similar one on 2010 boxing day...
for like 50$... wireless N FTW :fullofwin:

My speed hasnt changed from what Extreme was advertised as before. I think it was 15Mbps down and 1Mbps up.
EDIT: Nevermind, reset the cable modem and it should have the new speeds.

whoops! got too excited. Catch isn't 6 months. That's the pricing.
shaw xtreme is now 25 mbs DL and 2.5 mbs UL
this is effective TODAY for all new shaw customers.
if you have xtreme already it may take up to 30 days for the change. this is because shaw needs to manually do something in the equipment inventory screen for all modems. what you can do is call shaw and they can do it manually for you over the phone. otherwise theres some poor sucker sitting there doing it for each and every account LOL
edit: thats the length of the promotion ($29.95 @ 6 months)

call in and ask a TSR to "provision" your modem for you. Hold times are reasonable atm.

LOL! finally shaw upgraded their shaw extreme...too bad i already left shaw and im using telus optik highspeed turbo which is also 25mbps dl and 2mbps upload speed.. looks like the upload speed on the shaw's extreme internet is .5mbps more than telus optik highspeed turbo... Also the Data transfer limit on the shaw extreme is still capped at 100gig per month? thats too low especially when the usage internet billing happens.. Good thing for telus optik highspeed my max usage is at 250gig and hoping that telus wont be doing charging for over usage...
