What happens at these kinds of events? Do they simply just talk/preview the camera and that's it?

No, the 8-15 isn't shipping for a few months. I seems like they've discontinued the 15mm f2.8 fisheye too. Dumbasses.

I don't know how the public presentation went, but the presentation for the retailers was a snoozefest. The presenter was one of the top people at Canon Canada, but his presentation was so dry. He kept calling the 60D the "D60" which got some snickers everytime he said it, and went on and on about how great Canons in-body wireless flash system is. What a big pile of bullshit - Minolta introduced an even more advanced system in 1991 with their 7xi 35mm film body, and Nikon & Sony's present wireless flash systems are still far superior to Canon's.
They had some of the new L lenses there. I got to try the new 70-300L and it seems to be quite a sharp lens. It might be a good alternative to the 70-200 f4.
The only saving grace was that the buffet was quite tasty.
so the 70-300L isn't just the original 70-300 with a new white exterior? I'm seriously thinking of getting it, though I think the price might scare me a bit.

No, the new 70-300L is much bigger, but the IQ is quite something. I only got to shoot with it for only about 2 minutes in a dark room, but the IS seemed to work well, and delivered sharp images at 1/80 sec with the lens zoomed to 300mm.
