What happens at these kinds of events? Do they simply just talk/preview the camera and that's it?

The presenter was one of the top people at Canon Canada, but his presentation was so dry. He kept calling the 60D the "D60" which got some snickers everytime he said it, and went on and on about how great Canons in-body wireless flash system is. What a big pile of bullshit - Minolta introduced an even more advanced system in 1991 with their 7xi 35mm film body, and Nikon & Sony's present wireless flash systems are still far superior to Canon's.
They had some of the new L lenses there. I got to try the new 70-300L and it seems to be quite a sharp lens. It might be a good alternative to the 70-200 f4.
The only saving grace was that the buffet was quite tasty.
