BMW Canada phasing out RWD

09-19-2010, 02:28 AM
"The days of rear-wheel-drive BMWs in Canada may be numbered, BMW Canada president and CEO Franz Jung says, because Canadian buyers – even performance-minded BMW customers – simply see rear-drive as too much of a negative in the winter."
“Our aim is not to bring any rear-wheel-drive cars to Canada anymore”

I hope this asshat is talking out of turn and gets fired asap; unless BMW is seriously revamping their Xdrive system, so long to the Ultimate Driving Machine...
I know most people who buy BMW's aren't buying them for the drive anyways, but it's sad that soon it will be impossible to get a RWD+manual BMW in Canada

Woop dee doo. Don't bring them into Canada then.
Audi will bend them over and butt hump them into oblivion.

sounds like one of the dumbest things a car company ever thought of (dumber than the Aztek)
but im an audi fan more than a bmw so YAH Great Decision!

What do they plan to do with cars that don't have X-Drive options like the M cars and Z4, etc....... I doubt they will offer X-Drive on all of them down the road... especially with a manual transmission... most companies default you to automatic when you check off the AWD box.

afterall rwd+snow isn't too bad as long as you have good tires

I think you guys are taking their press release a little too seriously. I'm willing to bet they are talking about the flagship 3-series and 5-series cause these are the best sellers, for people who just want to commute, and they are recognizing people want FWD or AWD to commute. The enthusiast cars that sell in more limited numbers will still be RWD.

Most girls I know (including my mother and sister) want/like AWD as well. Something about "feeling secure" while driving.
To be honest, I was hoping my car had an AWD option too. It's useless in heavy snow. :(

Having awd in snow, or fwd, will do nothing to save your ass when you're going around a corner too fast, trying to stop at an icy intersection, or trying to make your way down an icy slope.
People rely far too much on their car's drive system to save them in an emergency situation, when in reality your fancy awd system won't do shit to slow you down when you're in a 4 wheel skid because you took a corner way too fast. Inexperience and ignorance are the two major factors that cause accidents in adverse weather conditions. Not to mention all of the people that just slap on all season tires onto their 4x4 because they think that's all they need.
In vancouver I can totally understand people not wanting to fork out for winters, but for christ sake, stay the fuck home if it snows, for all our sakes.
I wish there was a fail button for bmw, I'd be spamming it right now if I could. One of the reasons I would buy a bmw is because it's rwd... Now they're thinking of taking that away? I'd no longer have any desire to own a new one then.

Pretty stupid if they don't go back on this decision. It'll just drive the price of used and existing new RWD BMW's way up.

i think they are doing this because in winter time there are a lot of accidents bc(duh), and in vancouver area most of those accidents involve a bmw, but bmw's are the most luxury owned car in bc, what do they expect? just because you buy a bmw doesn't mean your good at driving

i know but now the sales man can push even more x-drive if they going to withdraw all the RWD, and possibly bring in some FWD bmw? which sounds weird but what they going to do if they withdraw RWD? unless every single vehicle going to be X-Drive than thats a different story.
I guess introduce isnt the best word, advertise i should say

i think half the people in this thread are reading this wrong,
it's not that they're removing the cars with RWD, they're not having it as an option so everything will have the x drive.
but the point about the M's and Z4 makes sense, what're they going to do about thos models? i hope they just leave it in.
also, i think i would give up my rwd for AWD, if my car had 50 more HP :D

Why dont they just put a better traction and stability control system in?
traction and stability control aint gonna do shit if ur all season tires cant grip the road surface to stop u.

I'm quickly losing faith in BMW. First no more high-revving NA motors, now this "X-Drive" nonsense. What's next, DCT transmissions only? Automakers need to seriously give their heads a shake if they want us to buy new vehicles. This is pitiful.

We are complaining since Vancouver area gets 1-5 days of snow a year.
compare with other provinces that have 3-6 months a year of compact snow.
This isnt america, and our Sales volume for all of Canada is probably half a year from just California alone. So we are Small Fish in the scale of things.

What a friggin stupid idea. I sure hope all this coming from the CEO was all said in passing. I can't see how BMW headquarters back in Germany would agree with such a stupid strategy. He said //M cars will have x-drive in the future? Yeah right buddy, keep dreaming. I personally think Frank Jung's wife crashed one too many RWD bimmers. ;)
I understand that the rest of the country gets big snow every year, but the inhabitants of those cities are always prepared for snowy winters. On a rwd BMW, DTC combined with some snow tires should almost never get you stuck. It's just the goofs in Vancouver that think their SUV or AWD vehicles will monster through snow w/ balding all-seasons.

It don't think it would be a problem if they included a way for the driver to adjust the power bias...say 20/80, 40/60, etc...AND up the power output by 20% or more.
But I doubt that is gonna happen...lol

IMHO, BMW hasn't made anything interesting since the E39 M5. Most people buy Bimmers for the badge and the badge alone. Once BMW expanded its leasing program, any Tom, Dick, and Jane could now own/lease one without actually understanding why they were the "Ultimate Driving Machine".

I honestly don't think most people would care. Many think a C-class is FWD, that's how uninformed the average driver is.
All manufacturers make these decisions at some point. Mercedes decided to go away from I4s cause people liked the bigger V6s, although I'm sure there were some who wanted to keep the fuel efficient I4s. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Mazda, Ford, ... all kept the smaller models of cars away from Canada cause they didn't think they'd sell in a country where trucks and larger sedans lead sales.

I realize Vancouver is not the center of the universe and that it snows everywhere else -- but I don't like this decision. Bye bye 50/50 weight distribution, steering feel and fuel consumption. Hello understeer, more weight and more things to break.

word, I just spent 4 years in calgary enjoying their winters. you'd think living in calgary would make people good at driving in adverse conditions, but honestly, the first day of snow is probably as bad as it is here in vancouver accident wise. I can't say for certain though cause I haven't experienced one yet.

Doesn't make sense to me if this happens for us in Vancouver if they want to stop moving in RWD cars. It's always been a few days of "WINTER/SNOW" in so many years (with the exception of 2 winters ago) and because of that RWD production models will stop being imported here? Serious?
Although I do agree that the C-Lais will find no change whatsoever, just another car with 4 wheels

Look further East, past the Port Mann... and you'll realize that it snows a hell of a lot more everywhere else. Kelowna? Fort McMurray? Montreal? Vancouver is a tiny percentage of Canada's population; it's not even Canada's most populous city.
They're not going to say "We're restricting imports of RWD vehicles to all of Canada, except for Vancouver..."
