Fail India. Shit on the streets, Bridges collapsing. Big time fail.
NEW DELHI - Big ticket athletes have pulled out of the Commonwealth Games, Scotland has delayed its departure to New Delhi and the New Zealand swimming team is seeking a "Plan B" should India's showcase event be cancelled. India had hoped to use the Games, held every four years for members of the former British Empire, as a display of its growing global economic and political clout rivaling China.
Instead, the Games have already descended into farce with some countries giving an ultimatum of a few days to get the Games ready or face the prospect of national withdrawals from an event which is so far only showcasing Indian traveler-tale clichés of filth, chaos and corruption.
Wales's team chiefs said they had given organizers until later on Wednesday to guarantee that the venues and athletes' village are safe before they make a decision on what to do next. Thousands of athletes from around the world are due to start arriving this week, with the Games due to start on Oct. 3.
A portion of false ceiling in the weightlifting venue caved in on Wednesday, a day after the collapse of a footbridge by the main stadium, injuring 27 workers, which highlighted problems facing organizers as they race to complete work. Nobody was injured at the weightlifting venue.
Commonwealth Games Federation president Michael Fennell said on Tuesday the two-week event was seriously compromised by filthy conditions that have shocked delegations. "There have been dogs roaming around the village, the apartments are filthy, there are piles of rubble and right now it's not fit to receive 6,500 athletes and officials," Michael Cavanagh, chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland, told the BBC.
"National Shame" was the headline of one Indian newspaper.
New Zealand's swimming team left today for Abu Dhabi, with an official saying another competition was in the pipeline if the Games are cancelled. Australian and Canadian squads are in Singapore and the British in Doha, suggesting another Asian meet could be hastily organized. There have been reports of stray dogs, stagnant water, workers urinating in public and human feces being found at the unfinished village where the athletes will live. Stagnant pools of water, breeding grounds for dengue mosquitoes, lie around and a Reuters reporter said homeless people were living outside the main stadium.
Indian government officials say the problems, including the roof collapse on Wednesday, are mostly minor glitches and the Games will be a success. But criticism is mounting even within India, where the country's leadership is seen as out-of-touch and having failed to understand what is expected of a nation like India, which is neither short of funds nor skilled labour to host a major sporting event. It also highlights concerns about how India will effectively spend some $1.5 trillion on infrastructure over the next decade which is fundamental to manage fast economic growth and a growing population of 1.2 billion.
DENGUE EPIDEMIC, SECURITY LAPSES
World discus champion Dani Samuels of Australia pulled out of the Games because of security and health concerns, as did England's world triple jump champion Phillips Idowu. Four other champions have quit due to various reasons, including injuries, in the last 24 hours.
"Sorry people, but I have children to think about. My safety is more important to them than a medal," Idowu wrote on his Twitter feed. Triple Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt of Jamaica is the highest profile athlete to skip the event.
An epidemic of Dengue, in part blamed on stagnant water around unfinished construction sites, has hit Delhi and thousands of people are being treated in hospital. Many residents are fleeing Delhi during the Games, worried about security and traffic chaos.
Only days after two foreign visitors were shot and wounded by unknown assailants in Delhi, Australian TV broadcast how a reporter bought bomb making devices to smuggle through security points. Indian police denied he ever crossed a checkpoint.
Highlighting how the Games has become a political minefield for a government already reeling under high inflation, officials from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's office toured the village. "The prime minister is of course extremely concerned," Cabinet Secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar, who is overseeing the preparations, told CNN-IBN. So far 77-year-old Singh, who took charge of monitoring the preparations a month ago after criticism of missed deadlines, has remained silent, underscoring what critics says is his out-of-touch leadership.
Sporting power Australia backed the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday and many venues, including the main Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, have been praised as world-class. Officials note that other events, such as the 2004 Athens Olympics, were dogged by problems but turned out fine.
However, Canada's Games team said it might delay the arrival of some of its athletes if adequate accommodation was not available. New Zealand Olympic Committee officials have arrived in Delhi to inspect facilities and security. "I think if the Commonwealth Games didn't go ahead, that could have significant implications for the future of the Commonwealth Games, and that's not something we'd like to see," New Zealand Prime Minister John Key told reporters
Indian officials defended their record.
"Please try to understand . . . They want certain standards of hygiene, they want certain standards of cleanliness, which may differ from my standard," said Lalit Bhanot, spokesman of the Delhi organizing committee.
Why the hell would they even consider holding games in India. Seriously??
"India had hoped to use the Games, held every four years for members of the former British Empire, as a display of its growing global economic and political clout rivaling China. "

What does religion have to do with the country being an overpopulated, filthy, disease infested shit hole?
You can say the same about China as well. There's more to India than what you see on tv. What you see are the poor run down areas but what you don't know is that right across the street there is someone living in a mansion (literally, I've seen huts on one side of the street and when you look over you see a massive house). How does a nation with the second largest population have such crappy athletes?
Too much corruption. Any funding that goes to developing athletes is usually fed to the higher ups and the corruption is the reason why there's so many infrastructure issues.
The only good thing that's come out of these games is that the airport in Delhi has finally been upgraded to international standards and the finally got a subway system going. That one major highway that they've been building for almost 5 years now is a total failure.
Indian life is simple and most don't follow the kind of lifestyle we take for granted here.
Although, it still boggles my mind why they would ever fucking think of giving India the privileged of hosting these games knowing their conditions - or lack of improving it either.
Haha, go figure. Let's see India try to spin their way out of this one.
Yes, I do have Indian friends, and they do tell me how much of a dump their home country is. My friend's going to have a ball with this one. As my friend described it, Indians are like the more extreme version of stereotypical Chinese. They're cheaper, the living conditions are crappier, and they put up a bigger front to try to impress foreigners.
A large part of it is corruption. Say government was going to spend $1 million on new building project. a good chunk of it would go to "paper work and admin fees", and "permit and management fees".
If you want the inspector to approve someting, there's a "fee". a lot of money goes to bribes and the projects usually go to friends of friends. the officials there are way too corrupt.
the rich in india keep getting richer due to corruption, they have servants, maid etc. and their servants have servants. . . . . while the poor gets fucked. . . .
India really needs to step up. Their corruption has made them so inefficent at getting anything done. Not being racist here but older Indians r really hard to deal with. They dun pay their bills and not answer phone calls & stuff. I'd done my fair share of debt collecting & old school Indians are by far the hardest to get money from. The younger, western educated ones, on the other hand, r pretty cool to deal with.

"India had hoped to use the Games, held every four years for members of the former British Empire, as a display of its growing global economic and political clout rivaling China. "
Yeah I got that part. It's just lame for India to even try to compare themselves with China. India even wants to go to the moon in the next few years. They have other shit they should deal with first.
corruption is killing India. The people awarding the construction contracts gert huge kick backs from the builders and then the builders cut corners to make money.
When collage grass hockey teams from India play Canada's national team the win but when India's national team place they lose because the selection process is so corrupt. Every politician wants a family member or someone from there state to be on the team.

Jesus christ on a bicycle, we need to send a few C-17's full of condoms and just disperse them over that country. That, or them and Pakistan need to just nuke it out finally.
whats the verdict on this one skinnypup? oh wait its not china. oh ya and theyre a democracy. looks like democracy has really solved all of indias problems overnight
There were false ceilings for the weightlifting venue? That makes no sense. A shame since this year, our largest amount of athletes competing in weightlifting with a good chance of medaling. Well, im looking forward to next games and qualifying. Posted via RS Mobile
