good idea if the project can be sponsored by the city+provincial+federal governments+SFU+translink.

i didn't click on the article but i heard this from the radio. my only concern is that there are 2 ways to go up SFU (hastings and gaglardi)... which route will they take? i think it's more beneficial if it's from production skytrain station, but there's about 2 km of flat road to build the new gondola on...

It could be good, and it could be bad....

There are ton's of hazards if they do build it. Such as, if the gondola breaks down, or doesn't work, how are student's going up to school? Since it's going to be the same as the Whistler gondola, I am sure it can handle the Snow in the winter.... but it's still a huge risk incase any accident's do occur.

beats taking the bus. wonder how long it'll take to build though if the project ever takes off. Hopefully it'll be finished before I graduate.

they're doing it straight form the skytrain station and it will take approx. 6 min from bottom to top instead of the 15-20min bus rides.

There's definitely a cool factor saying that you take the gondola to school - it sounds like it could be a tourist attraction too. Are there any other schools that are connected to a gondola? SFU and burnaby mountain could become it's own little town(kinda like how ubc feels like) if the mountain became more accessible and they actually developed it more. There's already that new development on g-lot and that new elementary school. They're also building a new childcare centre too. It seems everything they build up there has to be as green and as environmentally friendly as possible, so they should just run with that theme. Green restaurants, hiking trails, green everything.

you mean taxpayers+taxpayers+taxpayers+SFU+taxpayers

translink has no $ to do any of this, they are barely keeping up with the current crappy system. they are just going to keep raising the fares, then no one's going to use it.

next thing they're going to propose the maglev to ubc or some ridiculous ideas

it's cool but at the same time, they mentioned bus cancellations. well... they seem to forget about the residents in those areas who rely on the buses.

I joked around with this idea years ago, didn't know they would actually think about doing something like that lol.

Maybe they can change the route. With the current route, I'd say there are probably 1-3 people that actually get off the 145 bus at a stop other than SFU or Production Stn.

Maybe doable with a PPP

They mean cancel the crawl up the hill. For the other areas, just add new routes or update existing ones to serve the bottom of the hill without using those double buses. Win-Win.

Hmm I wonder which would actually be faster in terms of line up, for a slow yet consistent gondola or a bus that picks up a lot more people but has longer intervals

you have such a positive outlook to think translink will actually do that :P

i've noticed translink likes to simply replace, and will overlook/ignore what they want.

Oh, sorry. I was under the impression that this gondola would just replace the 145 (not sure if the 144 goes through Production since I've never taken it)

Quote:
The proposed gondola would connect the Production Way SkyTrain station on Lougheed Highway with the SFU campus, about 2.5 kilometres up the mountain.

I'm pretty sure the 144 wouldn't be affected unless all busses redirect to production, which would be counterintuitive. They are the route between the 145 and 135 Burrard (which takes Hastings)

they mentioned 144 on global's news. i distinctly picked up on it cuz i take the 144 but who knows at this point. i'm just super critical/negative of translink over their decisions in the past.

Only so many ppl are willing to blow good money on parking when they can park for free at the bottom. And I read they're looking at it cuz there may be a cost-benefit. But they should really do it cuz that bus crawl up the hill blows.

OK maybe they won't end up doing it. LOL. But I still believe, like most big companies, translink hires professionals who take pride in their work. Lots of times, you don't know what tradeoffs they have to make given their constraints, and they can't please everybody. That's why cars are so great!
