Major fail on this thread, trying to prove a link between industry related pollution and random birth defects is not as simple as mentioning the two in the same paragraph.

Birth defects have been around since recorded history, long before the industrial revolution, or china for that matter.

Yes china is not the cleanest country but correlating 1 genetic birth defect with the idea that it's caused by china's poor environmental practices doesn't really make sense. There are tons of birth defects in america too. The waste that it produces is then all dumped nowhere else, but the sea, lakes, and rivers. Since all waterbodies connect, the people in rural areas who do not have tap water, drink it from the lakes, causing birth defects and health problems; commonly cancer from the radiation in the water.

Then when the pollutants that are fused with the air, then start to cause breathing problems in all surrounding villages and towns who breathe it in everyday. Even the food they eat are sometimes contaminated from the air and residue from the things the pollutants touch. Then black smoke, with things like tar, blows into their faces and everything around the factory causing things to dye black, even skin. Crops cannot be even grown due to the radiation in the soil and even if it grows, it will be contaminated when they eat it.

For those that don't give a damn, you're right, that's why this is still happening to them.

People do care about the issues you have outlined, but to try and say that the one example depicted by the OP is a direct result of industrial polution is foolish.

We have the same problem in Canada with people seeing an increase in the number of rare cancers in Ft. Chippewan, which is downstream from major oil sands developement. Or perhaps take Estevan SK, steam boiler power generation plants litter the area of the town, and there is very high frequency of miscarriages, and birth defects.

It's not just China, or Canada, its the world, and you cant point the finger at corporations, you dont like what you say is going on in China? Stop buying products made in China. You dont like what the oil sands are doing to fresh water supplys? Stop using petroleum products.

There is thousands of examples of increased pollution being related to health concerns, but to try and link individual cases to individual sources is very difficult. Take Ft. Chip for example, yes they have seen an increase in rare cancers, but they have also seen a massive increase in drug use in the area over the same period... so is it meth? or is it oilsands?

I'm just trying to prevent stupidity and ignorance from spreading worse than it already has... Dont just repeat the things you hear, investigate for yourself and form your own EDUCATED OPINION.

Birth defects are not uncommon around the world, even in non-industrialized countries. There's no direct correlation between the two.

If a chinese girl were to have a kid with a white guy, the chances of the two having a kid with some sort of deformity would be pretty small. For example, in the indian community, there's a caste system a lot of people believe in which limits your mate selection to very few people. People of one caste can only marry people of that caste, which means people that have babies are closer and closer related) and this causes people with very similar gene pools to have sex, and kids.

This may seem ok but it's bad from a biological stand point because a lot of the genes that code for deformities are recessive. Recessive genes can be there, but not be seen. When two people that both have a recessive gene for a deformity mate (that means, they are carriers for the deformity/mutation, but they don't show it/have no signs that they have it) the chances that their kid will have the deformity are 1 in 4.

So anyways, if you were a northern indian person, marrying another northern indian person, your chances of getting an "indian type disorder" are higher than say, if you married a black person, because your gene pools are more similar to another person of the same race, there's a higher chance you will both have this recessive allele, and a 1 in 4 chance your kids will have it
