alpine 9815 and iphone help

Ya, ya, i know its an old deck, but its what i have in my car...

anyways, i just picked up an iphone4 and am wanting to connect my iphone4 to it.

for anyone with knowledge to this, would i be able to use the KCA-420i cable and get this done?
Done as in able to charge my iphone4 while outputting music from it through my speakers, and having the deck able to display track/artist names etc...

btw do i just have to connect one end of the cable to the back of the HU? or are there other wires that i would have to ground?

Thanks for any help!

The Iphone4 is having some serious compatibility issues with just about any Ipod controlled device.

The KCA-420I does work via a bus connector called 'AI-NET'. Its fairly basic but does work for some Ipods.

UNfortunately, any Alpine deck with AI-NET before 2004 will not be able to work with the 420I's Ipod control. The Alpine rep once told me that 2004 and up AI-NET compatible decks are the only Alpine units that will work. I beleive the 9815 was produced in 2003.

Don't get me wrong, that deck is one of Alpine's last great decks! But sadly, technology has surpassed it and in doing so, it has rendered your Ipod control kind of useless.

That said, I would wait a little bit before you decide on a new deck. The problems with the I4 have not all been worked out as far as I know. Perhaps somebody who has this phone and an Ipod deck can chime in and say otherwise but its the latest information that I have. Or if you are ever in the Coquitlam area I can see if your I4 works with our decks that we have on display or in our demo cars.

UPDATE:
Just tried a customer's Iphone 4 on an Alpine 505 double din screen today and it didn't work worth a damn. I tried a regular Ipod Nano and it worked flawlessly. So there you have it - I4's don't even work with newer Ipod compatible products.

Not an iPhone, but my iPod Touch works fine on my Alpine W505. This is the newest iPod touch using the latest system software. It didn't work at first and I was all pissed, but after I restarted the iPod, it worked. Restart instead of just putting the thing to sleep. Videos, music, whathaveyou, it all works. I'm so happy, because the latest iPod Touch is so much better than the previous model. Retina display, two HD cameras, ability to edit videos on the fly, FaceTime, and a lot more. Although Alpine navigation units suck ass (and I mean really suck ass), their iPod control is pretty darn good.
