: Front window tint - why it should remain illegal.

...this will probably bring out the naysayers ;)

Driving westbound along 7th avenue, a few blocks east of Cambie. This is in the area of Artona, photo studio for high school graduates everywhere. I'm following a few lengths behind a SUV, approaching an intersection where cross traffic has a stop sign (I have right of way). A southbound Honda Accord is stopped at the stopsign, being driven by a young (I suspect 17 or 18 year old) driver with a passenger. The driver is looking downwards.

The SUV passes and the Accord driver, who I can see isn't paying much attention and doesn't even look left starts to roll into the intersection. I see he doesn't see me so I cover my brake and give a gentle honk of the horn.

The driver continues to creep into the intersection, into my right of way. He still doesn't notice me. By this time he's fully into the intersection. I come to a complete stop, give him a good blast of the horn. I would have t-boned him if I assumed he knew I had right of way and continued.

He finally notices me, gives me a sheepish wave and completes his left turn.

Moral of the story:
- if this driver had front tint, I probably wouldn't have seen him and his inattention
- if I didn't see his inattention I probably wouldn't have been as prepared to take appropriate driving action
- if I didn't take appropriate driving action I could have hit him squarely on the driver's side door
- if I hit him on the driver's side door, he might have had a much, much different graduation year.

Please remember that others seeing you can save YOUR life and health too.

You don't need to SEE whether another driver is paying attention or not in order to be a defensive driver.....

what if the driver is really short

what difference would it make? you'd only be able to see the top of their heads anyways.

They wouldn't be able to see over the wheel and wouldn't be driving.

So if he had front tint you wouldn't have been able to see his car in the middle of the intersection? You had to see his face to know he was there?

By the OP seeing that the Accord driver wasnt paying attention (Accord rolling into intersection), it wasn't safe for OP to enter the intersection even though he had the right of way.

Ahhhh here come's a naysayer... :D

That was a good post, but front tint shouldn't be illegal, as long as it's not ridiculous like 5%, it really makes little difference

I had the exact same thing happen before, except the stupid ho was looking at me the WHOLE time as she rolled into my way lol

It should make no difference if you can see the actual driver or not, you should be driving like everyone is trying to crash into you anyways, I would never put faith in any random driver, that would be a huge mistake.

Though I agree with you, I am NOT stopping or even slowing at every intersection where I have right of way and cross traffic has a red/stop sign. Like everyone else (including you ;) ), I am expecting others to obey the rules of the road.

Anticipating other drivers' actions is pretty important. In this case, I was able to better anticipate that the other driver was unaware of me, and not only that, was not paying attention to the act of driving.

this scenario wouldve been the same weather or not if he had front tint or not.

if u needed to see his face to judge he was rolling out or not would be a fail on ur part.

you should always be considering teh retarded driving of canadian drivers - if he's crawling into the intersection, don't worry about looking at his face, be ready to stop or take avasive action (whcih isn't taught in this country, which is a real shame and would save a load of accidents)

front tint or not, people drive like retards, just know how to NOT get hit by them - legally

It's people like you who are the potential hazards on the roads, not the people who do 10-20 over the speed limit.

Pay the fuck attention when your driving.

You don't have to slow down at every intersection, just use your peripherals to see if there are any idiots, that's all. Doing so has saved me from t boning several dumbasses now...

I don't care about other poeple. If they have the stop sign and run it, it's their fault and i will have no problems slamming into them with my tank of a Volvo 242. Natural Selection FTW

That's the shit that goes on in Alberta... all the jacked up F-350's and Rams with bullbars just floor it if they have the right of way, regardless of whose in front.

Need more jacked up trucks in the Lower Mainland. That should tidy up the streets pretty quick lol :D

i can see how front tint may be a potential hazard
but your case doesn't seem to fit the bill.

it wasn't an issue with limited vision, people are simply not pay attention.

I used to have front tint on my old car. Drove around fine.

The only issue I had was that I couldn't see wehn reversing while looking at the side mirrors. I always had to roll my windows down. This only applied at night, obviously.
