For a limited time, Canada can taste the fast-food fried phenomenon selling fast south of the border.
KFC’s Double Down, a bacon and cheese sandwich that uses chicken breasts instead of buns, is making its foray into the Canadian market Oct. 18.
It will be available nationally until Nov. 14.
The “most outrageous sandwich experience in the country” is KFC’s most successful sandwich in the company’s history – selling more than 10 million in less than a month in the U.S., according to the KFC announcement issued Thursday.
Each fried sandwich lards on 540 calories (or 460 for the grilled version), 30 g of fat, and 1,740 mg of sodium. Health Canada places an adult’s recommended daily salt intake at around 1,500 mg.
KFC Canada originally refused to sell the sandwich until it was first tested in the U.S. market. It started selling there last year.
For months before the sandwich’s debut, speculation went wild online about whether it would come to Canada or if it was a hoax.
Food-industry consultant Darren Tristano said the sandwich targets working-class consumers with less income who want to get more bang for their buck.
“It’s about quantity. Whether we like it or not, this product will appeal to a significant portion of the consumer base,” he told salon.com in April.
“It appears to be achieving the goal, which is to get people interested. Freak shows are disgusting, but everyone seems to want to go to them anyway. I’m probably going to try one.”
A new Ipsos Reid poll, conducted on behalf of KFC Canada, found that Canadians think people will want to eat the sandwich, but not as many want to attempt the feat themselves.
Of the approximately 1,100 adults polled, 90 per cent said they think other Canadians will give it a try. Only 45 per cent said they would take down the Double Down.

Yea, I was super hungry and didn't want to waste my time with fries, so I just got two of them. Filled me up and then some, lol.
But ur combo you listed there is pretty devastating as well...fish sandwiches are one of the greasiest fast food burgers out there (BK Big Fish is the greasist to date)

Yea man this thing is REALLY salty. I didn't really like it, the processed mozz. cheese kind of ruins it for me. If they don't make it fresh its soggy and dry. So make sure they don't use old crap.

Walked past the KFC in the Richmond Centre food court earlier today and saw that they were already serving the Double Down!
I just came from dinner that time so I wasn't able to try it for myself. It was about $6.80-something-ish I believe without the meal. Pretty pricey if you ask me. I'll try it at least once sometime this weekend/next week though for sure :D

Might not kill you in calories, but the sodium (salt) will.

Just wondering ; what do people have against salt all of a sudden? Presuming you have functioning kidneys and normal blood pressure, it's not like there's anything to worry about aside from getting thirsty.

Nothing against salt, in moderation. At work I'm cooking all day and use it in everything.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the double down has like 1700mg's? Pretty excessive. I was thirsty for hours after eating one.

"excessive" depends on a lot of things, like activity level, kidney function, water intake, etc. But for most normal people, it's probably nowhere near "excessive".
its quite high but if you're only eating like one a week or a month or ever... then its not really the worst thing you have to worry about. people tend to blow things out of proportion.
if you smoke, drink, drive, breathe city air, do drugs, drink or eat from plastic, eat non organic and synthetic foods, etc......................................
and you're concerned about 1700mg of sodium in an occasional meal......
then you need to get your priorities straight.

for a 2000cal diet, its approx 2400mg of sodium daily intake. Now that's an estimated figure based on the diet.
the double down is 1430mg of sodium. So over HALF of a normal daily intake is from one sandwich? Even depending on your diet, if you think 3500mg of sodium is a normal daily intake, you are still doing about a 1/3 of your DAILY intake for a fucking sandwich, which won't even fill you up like a proper meal would.
Yeah, I would say that's pretty excessive.

Haven't you learned yet that the nutritional guidelines are pure bullshit? If everyone ate based on those guidelines, there would be more and more overweight and diabetic people, and happening at an earlier age.. yeah...

Well, from what I've seen, salt is pretty bad for us.
Not that I don't eat salty foods, big macs, fries, chips, salted nuts.
I also don't drink that much water, so that doesn't help either.
Anyways, point is, it's pretty high in salt, so just be aware.
But it's not like we all haven't had worse, or eat worse on a regular basis.
I just can't justify spending that much money on a carb-less meal.

From what I've seen, there is no proof that salt is bad for us at all. In fact, it's the most abundant electrolyte in our bodies, and avoiding sodium too much will lead to significant health problems. Much more than having too much sodium, that's for sure.
But I guess it's the latest thing for the media to latch onto for fear-mongering...
Here's some info (http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/92/5/1005) you may want to look into, regarding sodium guidelines, and whether they are even having an effect on the population at all. (basically it says that people all over the world have been steadily taking about 3565–3680 mg/d on average, rather than the recommended intake)
Also a couple (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9008250?dopt=Abstract) of clinical trials (http://archinte.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/157/6/657?ijkey=ee3118a624bf332a9b863d69bff4ab68a78ea95e&keytype2=tf_ipsecsha) (actual trials, and not observational studies btw) that show the result of reduced sodium intake.

For sure getting enough sodium in your diet is important.. I'm sure I get more than is recommended. But I can't see large amounts of salt being good for me.
I'm pretty skinny and usually don't pay much attention to nutrition labels but was surprised to see how much sodium was in just 1 sandwich. it did concern me a little BUT didn't stop me from eating it.

You guys can argue all you want about salt intake, but in the end this sandwich sucks. It's expensive, salty and obviously not good for your health if eaten on a consistent basis. No type of fast food is good for you on a consistent basis. Everyone tried it once and that's that, which is why it is a limited time offer.
