Prepare for the Worst Winter since 1955

Get ready for a wet, wild winter.
We’re headed into a La Niña year the likes of which haven’t been seen since 1955, according to Washington state climatologist Nick Bond.
“It’s shaping up to be a lively one,” Bond said Thursday, before adding a typical forecaster’s warning.
“There’s really no guarantees. If you think of it like a card game with cold weather as the aces, this year there’s a few more aces in the deck.”
La Niñas occur when the ocean near the equator is cooler than usual.
Bond said temperatures for this time of year are the coldest since 1955, and the pattern could continue as we head into winter. Ocean temperatures affect air circulation, and cool air can lead to more rain and snow and colder temperatures.
While that doesn’t mean we’re guaranteed the worst winter on record, there’s certainly the potential for a bad one, says Environment Canada meteorologist David Jones.
“La Niña is like the cold cousin of El Niño,” Jones said. “The dice are loaded in favour of colder weather.”
There are many examples of La Niña years that received less snow than “neutral” years, but six out of the eight past La Niña years saw above-average rainfall between October and December and below average temperatures between January and March.
The Farmers’ Almanac is also predicting a cool year.
According to the 2010-11 forecast, “winter temperatures will be a bit below normal . . . with below-normal precipitation and above-normal snowfall.”
Bruce Fatkin, manager of the Langley Community Farmers’ Market, said local farmers might read the almanac, although it is with “tongue planted firmly in cheek.”
The record for the highest single-day snowfall in Vancouver came in 1996 when 41 cm fell on Dec. 29, smashing a record from 1916.

I have never spent more time shovelling snow my car out of snow and struggling to push it out. It was miraculous how I was still able to drive around everywhere with all-seasons. Thank god for my mom forcing me to keep a shovel in the car and good samaritans.
After reading this article, I'm gonna start searching for winter tires from the states. Anybody know of any deals? :D

You'd be surprised... To be honest, if you don't get 'em siped, I'm not sure they'll be much better than my "all seasons."

these tires are great in the snow, The Kevlar mtrs get awesome grip and good grip on the ice with 15psi. I have a couple buddys with them and they work awesome in the snow.
And I also have a rear locker which helps a bit as well.

I just ordered a set of 4 Nitto winters 205/55/16 for about $475 shipped to WA. I hope this goes through, cause the website wouldn't let me enter a Canadian billing address, so I had to make up a US one. They also sent me a blank confirmation email.

The problem is when there's too much snow, many cars lift off the ground. At that point the world's best snow tires don't do you a lick of good. *sigh*
Anyone know if it's illegal to park your car overnight on a big street for days on end, if there are no signs saying otherwise? Might have to do that this year.

I've been careful as fuck on them since the rain started, gut feeling says that they might lose grip if they hit a deep puddle. They came with my Passat when I bought it (has aftermarket wheels), but I want something different if I opt for rota slips.

dude basically if a tire cant handle the rain, expect to handle 10 times worse in the snow.
912 and 512 both are myserable in the snow.
I had 912 two winter ago, used it for less than 2 months and the hell with it, sold it and got Conti winter tires and never look back.

If it's mostly a DD I would say a selectable locker such as a ARB or an electric but if you don't drive that much I would say a detroit which I had in my last truck and it was awesome. If you don't have the money to spend an Aussie locker is decent as well.

Basically money is what's holding me back and at $285 I can't argue with Aussie. ARB wold be lots of win though but can't afford that.

i got a detroit in the rear and an aussie in the front. the detroits not too bad to drive with, but it does chirp the tires when making sharp turns and i dd it.
the lift i had was 4crawler 1.5" bj spacers and 3" coil spacers with moog hd springs, 2.5" body lift and running 33's

2 4x4's, both locked + 2 Bobcats w/ cabs and heat (773 and S250) should make up for the shitty year at work.

You can learn to drive a skid steer in about 2 minutes but it takes a while to do it without killing your tires, attachments, lawns and your back and do it quickly. People tend to try to do things too fast when they're still green (operating any type of heavy equipment) but you want to focus on being smooth - slow is smooth, speed comes with time.
No license required since they're usually off the road - liability insurance just in case.
RSUV started on here when they started the 4x4 section.

Never tried my car in heavy snow yet, but I doubt I'll make it through if it was as rough as 2008.
At least my dad has a Toyota Highlander which may help on my way to work if anything goes wrong.
Worst case scenario, there's always a choice of public transit. It's not the end of the world.

IDK what plows are worth but a good used Bobcat S250 (loaded, under 5000 hrs), bucket w/ consumable blade and a trailer can be had for around $35K. Unlike a plow, it can make money year-round and the trailer can transport most vehicles.
Both his skid steers (Case brand, older models) and his trailer were probably worth under $50K.

holy shit i guess if you have the equipment or could rent it for cheap that aint bad at all (im assuming the 'machines' are pricey)
If you are talking new, a S220 spec'd out for winter work is around 50-60K. A plow for a truck you're looking around 7-8k.
I dont need a trailer to haul around stuff, cause I can just load it into my Roll off and i'll be good to go
fliptuner
10-12-2010, 08:27 AM
Yup, our S250 was $60K+, new with a cab, door, AC, 72" bucket, stick control and 2 speed. Actually, we got a 72" sweeper as well.
I have a 16' flatdeck and a rolloff bin truck (machine fits inside bin) but prefer the trailer in the winter, just in case the roads are bad or there are a lot of hills, since they're towed by 4x4's.

ICBC won't cover you damage if you don't have snow tires on during winter season or something like that.
Please stop spreading misinformation.
Driving without winter tires will not void your insurance in the event of a claim or mean that you are automatically at-fault for a crash. If you get in a crash where winter tires could have helped, it may be a deciding factor in determining whether or how much you are at-fault.
