Is there a tutorial out there that shows how to do this 'American Apparel ad' type effect? Interested in learning more about PP.

easy way to do it is adjust color option in PS. just adjust the highlights and shadow for a color cast.

like split-toning? i know they look similar but are different... but how so?

One thing to keep in mind is a lot of the look of the images has to do with the lighting. You can't get that look with the angle of the Sun here in the Northwest - even on the sunniest of days.
