2010 GTI VS...? Alternatives?
SpuGen

I'm not buying it. My friend is.
He went to the VW dealership, and he was given a quote for $41K. Fully loaded. All the bells and whistles.
I tried to convince him to get the WRX, but he doesn't want to drive a Standard car.
He plans to pay for the car in full, but he's wondering how much he can get off the sticker price.
I'm thinking about finding alternatives, but he seems pretty set on the GTI. Would an A3 be better? the price is similar, but will be quite a bit more on the Audi.
He needs something with 4 Doors, Automatic.
We looked at the Lancer Ralliart, but the salesmen weren't willing to move on the price. I've been trying to convince him to learn how to drive Standard, but no luck. Otherwise, he would've gotten the WRX by now.
So, how much should he be paying for one?
Or if you know someone who's bought one, how much did you pay for your:
- Lancer Ralliart
- GTI 5 Door.

Does he need a new car? For 40k, you can probably get a pre-owned 335 sedan or S4.

Forgot to mention that.
New only. He's been driving the same car for 15 years. He wants something new.
But I've been trying to convince him to get something cool. Like an M3. hah

41k LOL what a joke..for the kinda money i wouldn't be buying a freaken gti
GTI is a good car but NOT for $41k. For that price you can buy so much more.
G37, A4, 3 series, etc.....

It's $41K for a Golf.
A fully loaded GTI, but still a Golf.
Which is why I'm asking people how much he can get off on the price.
And yet, there's still a 3 month wait for one. Retarded.

41k is way too much for a gti. tell him to buy my vette instead :D :D
If he does want a GTI type car why not look at a r32 in the states? Get one for around 25k and guaranteed to have more fun then the 2010 gti.

Lol @ your friend not buying the Mitsubishi cuz they wouldn't move on price... You realize there's only about 1100$ in mark up? Your friend should base his car buying off what car suits his needs and budget, not what car he can get the best discount on...

He doesn't want to go through the hassle of buying from the states.
Been trying to convince him to get one from the states though...
He likes the IS250 AWD, but it's too pricey.

The fact that it's slow doesn't help.
Who wants to pay full sticker price for thier new car? I sure as hell don't.
Unless I REALLY wanted it, and there was no chance in hell I would get any off.

If your friend wanted a fully loaded GTI in the first place, he would've gone for a fully loaded A3 or at least similarly equipped. If he didn't care, he won't have gone for a fully loaded GTI in the first place.
A base automatic A3 starts at $33k, and that doesn't even include bi-xenon lights.

iirc I've tried to talked to mitsu and got about 3k lower from sticker at new type... that's cash buy, today and if recent grad, there's another incentive iirc... try a few mitsu dealers, most of them don't move around, but still, so far I've got 2 dealers to move for 3k or so.

$41k is definately way too expensive for a VW GTI. Don't know why GTI's are overpriced but that's life.
I would suggest taking a look at the new Hyundai Sonata. Exterior looks baller, and interior is actually on par with a few European vehicles, and it's not AS expensive.
Plus, it has 4 doors and automatic transmission lol

Which dealership is this? $41k for a fully loaded GTI is a little over the top... considering that I have friends who got theirs for about 38k with everything including NAV... before freight, taxes etc.
Go to Regency VW, they seem to want to deal and are usually willing to do pretty good on deals.
The GTI is a nice car... but fully loaded at that price it does hit the diminishing-returns point.
On those putting it down as slow... Stage II downpipe + flash and it will run with 135's and 335's all day, especially GTI.

Used E46, obviously.
The $41K is taxes in. Quoted from Clarkdale on Main.
When he first asked me on opinions, he wanted an SUV. Something that can haul shit with. Possibly go off-roading in.
I suggested the 2011 Grand Cherokee. He liked it, but his girlfriend said it was way too big, and he would probably never go off-roading, or do anything fun with it. It's also overkill when his office is in Downtown, and lives in Vancouver.
So he downgraded and wanted something that was AWD, and able to tackle snow+mountains with ease.
I suggested the Ralliart/WRX. He test drove the Ralliart, but thought it was too slow. He didn't test drive the WRX because he can't drive Standard, so instead went for a drive in the 2.5i Limited just to get a feel for it, since I told him I would teach him how to drive Standard. While he liked the Impreza, he didn't like the fact that he had to go learn how to drive Standard just to get the WRX, since the 2.5i was just WAY too slow. Alot of noise for something.. slow.
His co-workers suggested the RAV 4, or CRV. While they're good cars, he didn't like it.
Test drove the IS250 AWD. LOVED it. Didn't like the price. It's a great car, but it's just a little too much. At the same time, he likes the RX, but again, it's a little too much for what he needs. The options on the Lexus just to get the Factory Navi made the price just jump in the Thousands.
So, we've narrowed it down to:
4 Door Sedan/Hatch. AWD prefered. Automatic. Factory Nav a huge plus. Fully loaded, prefered. Must be New.
Budget WAS around $50K. Now it's at around $40K. Taxes in.
If it were still 50K.. the A4 Premium Plus has everything he needs and wants.
Regarding the budget drop... I think it's because there isn't really anything in the 50K range that suits what he really needs. It just seems overkill for him.
It's not giving me alot of room to work with though. He's already said No to everything Honda/Acura.
BTW, he plans to keep this car for 10+ years, or until he actually needs a new car for kids or something. He's got tons of money, and I'm having a hard time trying to convince him to buy something that's fun and practical. VS something to replace the POS he's driving now. He needs to treat himself, and not buy an overpriced..Golf.

he has TONS of money
should buy a E coupe/four door than
new 5 series looks good , like a mini 7 series
practical, got class, got the look, got the luxury
and if not get a C63 than, its cheap for what it is
$63g, with navi $5g extra, or AMG useless package for $7g extra

How about the legacy or outback either 2.5i or the 3.6R versions
The 2.5's have a new CVT that is supposed to be pretty decent and 3.6 has quite a bit of power. Might be a little bulky for your friend's wants though

That was his first mistake, listening to the gf. It's his car not hers.

Ok, if it's taxed in that's not bad. Has he tried the Tiguan? Or the Golf Wagon? Might be what he's looking at, as they carry stuff better and are a better value for money.
The TDI Golf Wagon is fully loaded at about 30k plus tax except for the factory nav, but the stock system sucks (as I know from experience). Very slow and unresponsive.
The Tiguan is a little pricier but it does come with the options he wants and is AWD. It's also a very nice little SUV in terms of handling.
However, if he wants to keep them for 10+ years he might be better off choosing a different brand entirely.
I'm not saying the Gti is slow, but stage 1 flash would not run with 135/335i
Yeah, it probably won't if it's a 335 coupe and it's manual. However, 335 sedan (or xi sedan, even better) and automatic? I'll take my chances. Stage II will make it a driver's game.

I think your friend should get the golf 2.5 MKVI
I've driven both the gti and the golf and I feel like the golf is more refined and sounds better, if he's not into modding the golf still packs a decent punch with 170hp
I would suggest the diesel but theirs quite the wait list. You can probably get the 2.5 loaded for 30k tax in. Might not have gps though but has that little multimedia center thingy that my cousin has in his, looks good, i don't see the point haha
