: TD Bank Scam?

Hey guys, my brother just received a new debit card from TD bank. The weird thing is that my brother did not ask for a new card. The letters in the mail even looked legit, so I cant even tell if its a scam or not. They even have my brothers information (bank card number, name, etc). What was strange is that there was no TD bank logo on the mail and there was no returning address. It only had PO Box 1000/ CP 1000 Markham, Ontario L3P 3N3 on the envelop. So I searched up the postal code online and I found this..

http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?tsn=1&nav=messages&webtag=ab-contests&tid=13257

The place that scammed had the exact same address details. So I am thinking this is a scam. Does anyone that work at TD know of anything like this? Thanks.

just bring it to TD bank and ask them, sometimes they send out new cards to users that dont have the chip thing.

hhhmmm interesting I got one in the mail as well, havent used my debit yet though so i dont know...i think my mom got one like 8 months ago too(without asking), i think they just send out new ones to improve security

what i found weird though was that there is no activation required but i guess that doesnt matter since only you know the pin

RBC sent a new chip card to me, I didnt even ask for one. They are trying to move everyone to using chip cards for security.

They are upgrading your older chipless cards to the new ones with chips.

Btw, my BMO mail comes in unmarked envelopes with my address and a P.O. box too. Basically all of my BMO mail comes like that.

Bring it to TD just in case.

Thread jacking a bit here but can I just walk into TD and ask for a new one?! I'm like the only one who still has one of the older cards lol -_-

its not fake. my whole family received it including me, and i had no problem using it at the bank. doesnt need new activation cuz its a debit card, card # stays the same, pin stays same, just a new chip.

isnt it common sense, how can "they" try to jack your info if they already have it all and sent it to you; its not like typing in ur pin with the card sends the pin to somewhere except the bank.

^yes

All debit and credit cards are switching over the chip and pin cards for improved security against credit card fraud. Soon all retailers will have switched over to chip pinpads as well

TD sent me a new card (one with the chip) awhile ago when I was still on their old chip-less card. I didn't ask for one, they just sent it to me. Should be legit but if you have your doubts, take it into your TD branch.

yep not a scam. I got my card in the mail a few days ago, just used it to buy gas, withdraw money at an abm, and tried the new chip features which replaces swiping(if they replaced the interac machine) and basically just puts your card into a slot of the interac machine to read the chip. Some pretty cool stuff.

^ They mail it directly from East coast. So no you can't wait there to get it made. I guess you can wait outside for 2 weeks and ask them to mail it to your local TD.

looks very legit to me....

if they mark it as credit card inside or debit card inside etc, postage service ppl may steal it

the PO box is prolly just a general one that big companies use?

CIBC did this too not too long ago. I just called them and asked them and they verified it. Also if you look at the number on the cards they are likely the same ones.

No, Debit cards by TD canada trust will never have identical numbers on the cards.

Do you have internet banking? Even though they don't go actively telling you but it should be notified at least on their internet that they will be sending cards to improve security. At least that's what HSBC is doing.

Strange, when I upgraded my business ATM cards to chip cards they all had the same #s on them, though I suppose this might be a business thing.

I never checked when my personal card was changed.

Yes you sure can, the only thing is that you will have a new number on the card

No, Debit cards by TD canada trust will never have identical numbers on the cards.

Incorrect. If head office mails you a new card directly, it will have the same number on the card.

I got this new card 6 months ago and thought it was a duplicated card or something, but I read the news and realized that both of the cards came with the same number. I didn't ask for a new card either.

Incorrect. We no longer issue cards with the same number. (I work at the head office right now as intern)

Actually, I just got mine yesterday with the same number.

No wonder you're an intern.

Its updating you to a chip card, my visa was also sent with no TD letter, its to have people not know it could possibly be a bank card or a credit card. But check with your local branch to see is it legit. Can't be too safe!

So was gonna go to TD tomorrow and ask for one with a chip but I got the EXACT same mail as the OP did. :) It's legit for sure since it worked when I bought food about 10 mins ago.

I received one a couple of months ago. My new TD debit card was the same number as the old debit card. TD just automatically mailed it to me stating that the new card has better security features so I should be using the new card

It's normal - if your old card was not a chip card, or just hasn't been replaced for a long long time, they will mail you a new one without telling you about it before hand.

i believe its the same number if u just get a new type of card..... it follows ur account number......

if you lost your card then u might get a new number......

10-15-2010, 09:43 AM
My number never changes with new cards. The only thing that gets updated is the security code and expiry date. I've had the same number for the last decade.

Numbers NEVER change with new cards, its also linked with your online banking system too...

bartone
10-15-2010, 01:20 PM
For creditcards, if you ask for a replacement card due to your card being broken etc, they will send one with the same number.
If you get a replacement card because you lost your card or it has been compromised, the number changes.

Like other's have said, it's not a scam.
They don't plaster the logo on mail with cards because obviously, it would be pretty easy to tell that hey, there's a card in here.
And yea, they all want our cards upgraded for security purposes.
I'm actually surprised TD is doing this now... I'm with scotia and this was done a long time ago....
