VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The US is close to banning the sale of alcoholic energy drinks, but Canada isn't following suit.

They're sugary, loaded with caffeine and they're on the shelves of liquor stores across the country. Health Canada says it has "tighter control on the addition of caffeine to foods" than the US, and the drinks in question there aren't allowed to be sold here.

But there's a loophole: it's ok to sell them in Canada as long as the caffeine comes from a natural source, like gurana or chocolate.

Bill Jeffery with the Centre for Science and Public Interest says there is lots of research out there on the dangers of these drinks. "It seems like Health Canada is taking a kind of bureaucratic approach to interpreting existing law, rather than tackling a public health threat. I think it's incumbent on [them] to take some kind of action. They've known about this issue for at least months and longer if they've been reading the scientific literature."

Jeffery says the main concern is because these drinks have stimulants in them, and those who consume them may think they're sober enough to drive even though they're quite drunk.

Four Loko Banned by Washington State Liquor Control Board


(Nov. 10) -- Next week, Washington state residents will no longer find "blackout in a can" beverage Four Loko on liquor store shelves.

The infamous party drink responsible for the hospitalization of nine Central Washington University students at an Oct. 8 house party is being placed under emergency ban by the state's Liquor Control Board, set to go into effect Nov. 17, according to The Seattle Times.

The temporary ban, which passed unanimously and includes all caffeinated alcohol drinks, will remain in place for 120 days as the board deliberates protocol for a permanent prohibition. The Liquor Control Board cited "public health and safety concerns" as the basis for its decision.

A lobbyist for Phusion Projects, maker of Four Loko, objected to the Liquor Control Board's ruling.

"No one is more upset than we are when our products are abused or consumed illegally by underage drinkers," said lobbyist Jim Halstrom. "But we also believe curbing alcohol abuse or underage drinking will not be accomplished by singling out a lone product or beverage category. We think the true answer lies with increased education and awareness by all and with respect for the law."

Several colleges including the University of Rhode Island and Ramapo College in New Jersey recently banned the caffeinated alcoholic concoction from their campuses. Michigan and Oklahoma are also prohibiting the sale of similar products.

i looked it up, and four loko are only banned in washington state for 120 days for the time being. during these 120 days a bill will try to be passed to permanently ban them, but if that doesnt happen, theyll get unbanned.

and i heard on the news today four loko is planning on taking the caffeine out, so theyll probably get unbanned once that happens as well

Four Loko is making its way back to store shelves in Washington after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a crackdown on the sale of high-amp energy drinks in November. The makers of Four Loko removed the caffeine and two other stimulants, and the Washington State Liquor Control Board approved the change Dec. 8.

Oregon also banned caffeinated alcoholic beverages in November. We do not know if the new-recipe Four Loko has been approved in Oregon. However, retailers tell us the OLCC is gradually notifying store owners and removing old-recipe cans one by one from shelves.

And what about the old Four Loko? It's now set to be guzzled ... by cars.
