A Delta man accused of attaching handles to his pet turtle and tortoise by drilling holes through their shells could be facing animal-cruelty charges.

“I was pretty furious when I saw them,” says Abbotsford’s Reptile Guy Mike Hopcraft, who took the animals from their owner on Tuesday. “He modified these animals to suit his lifestyle.”

Hopcraft — who runs a rescue and education program for and about exotic animals — says he got a call about the animals from the Greater Vancouver Zoo, which had allegedly been offered them by the owner.

He says the man had drilled four holes into each creature’s shell. Cables ran from the holes to a handle on their backs, making it “easier” for the owner to carry the 30-pound Sulcata tortoise and to tether a leash to the turtle.

“They do have nerves in their shells, so it would have been painful for them when they were drilled,” says Hopcraft.

The box turtle also had a jewel glued to its shell that Hopcraft has been unable to remove, he says.

Marcie Moriarty, an investigator with the B.C. SPCA, called it “accessorizing to the extreme.”

“Clearly, this shows a person who has no respect for animals and no knowledge on how to care for them,” Moriarty says.

The SPCA has launched a full investigation, which will also look into other animals the Delta man owns, before recommending animal cruelty charges to Crown counsel.

A veterinarian is to look at both animals Wednesday afternoon to determine if there are further injuries.

Hopcraft says the tortoise appears to be underweight and is unable to walk without dragging its shell on the ground, while the turtle’s claws and beak are overgrown.

He intends to send the turtle — if the jewel can be removed — to the Greater Vancouver Zoo, he says, and would like to add the tortoise to his educational program, which subsidizes his rescues.

Hopcraft says that plan may not come to pass, given that his program faces closure in December under B.C.’s new exotic-animal ban — unless he can find new funding.

I'm no dog expert but I think male dogs have to get neutered at the right age for health reasons, same goes for female dogs getting spade. Again, I'm no expert so feel free to correct me. The tail cut is common on those big dogs, never seen ears cut. I'm sure it happens, considering people eat dogs, well people will eat literally anything that walks. I'll stick to food and v.

Spaying/neutering, if done properly by a reputable vet, should be conducted under general anesthesia, no?

But the animals never asked to be spayed or neutered, they were made to reproduce and their owners took that from the animals for their own conveniences. In this case the turtles shell was drilled cuz the owner thinks it's easier to carry the turtle around this way, I'd say it's the same thing as neutering, but only that turtles aren't your ordinary household pet, thus the idea of modifying a turtle is considered "cruelty" to those stupid treehuggers that have nothing better to do all day.

My god. I have turtles. He must've held them down with a substantial amount of force to drill.. asshole

Do the turtles have nerves in their shells? Did the drilling actually hurt?

If not, then I think the crime here isn't really the drilling, but the fact that the turtles are malnourished and generally were improperly cared for, handles aside. The "drilling a hole in a turtle" image is just far easier for the media to sensationalize, since it's easier for the general public to imagine (and thus exaggerate) such a strange act. The headline "man improperly feeds turtles" would be far less engaging.

EDIT: whuuups totally missed the line where it says they have nerves in their shells.

EDIT2: Apparently they have nerves, but they don't feel pain (like our fingernails). The more you know.... And my comment stands.

My female dog had to get spade, she kept discharging... So I'm sure same goes for male dogs

Turtles CAN feel things that come in contact with their shells because they have nerve endings there, but they can not feel pain as they do not have those types of nerve endings. Why is this? I haven't the slightest of clues but have seen it in most research material so I'm guessing it's true. Kinda hard to ask the turtle if something hurts.

I don't think they have nerve endings in their shells, but the shells are made from Keratin, the same material in our fingernails. I'm pretty sure they feel it, but it's probably not painful...

There shouldn't need to be any need to distinguish what his "intents" were. You're all missing the point. The issue here is not if the turtle can feel pain or not, the issue here is that this guy just did it with the assumption that there's no problem with what he's doing. He had an undeserved sense of entitlement.

How would you guys like it if I went over to your house unannounced and fucked your sister because I thought it'd be neat? Noone got hurt, she's still alive and kicking what's the big deal? Oh btw I posted pictures on the internet with my dick up her ass. Cool eh?

You know that people get their pets spayed or neutered so that they are unable to reproduce accidentally, producing a litter of offspring that will potentially be destroyed if suitable homes can't be found, don't you? Haven't you ever heard the saying "spay and neuter saves lives"? This case with the turtles is NOT AT ALL the same thing, not even comparable. Fucking idiot.
