"Lately in Urumqi, a city in northern China, an odd unfortunate death happened. An 11 year old girl visited a public toilet to conduct her business and, after five minutes, she went unconscious because of the unbearable odour. Two hours later, another girl, 20 year old, fainted in the public bathroom’s door. After confirmation with the medical team, the 20 yearold girl, unfortunately, was pronounced dead.

According to the news, the Tiantian, the 11 years old girl, was patroning the nearby market with her mom and her 7 year old brother to buy clothing. At 5:40pm, Tiantian took her brother to the public bathroom. After a while, the little brother rushed back and told his mom that there was something wrong with his sister. The mom went to the public bathroom and realized the daughter was unconscious. She tried to wake her up but it did not work.

Tiantian was rushed to the nearby hospital and she woke up after she received an oxygen mask. She woke up and recalled, “The bathroom doesn’t has a flushing system, it smell really bad, the small window can’t be opened. I felt dizzy after a while, I can’t even breath, when I tried to open the door I blacked out”. Tiantian’s mom said she did not give any suspected-contagious food to her daughter so it was not likely food poisoning that made Tiantian unconscious.

What shocks people is, on the same night, at 7:20pm, another girl fainted in same toilet. According to spectators, this toilet is poorly built with assorted boards and it is created with three compartments. There is a person who charges 50 cents RMB for every visit to the public bathroom. The person has been arrested by the police for interrogation.

Mr. Liu, who is a neighbour around the area, said he was walking with his son and he was shocked to find out a girl fainted in the public bathroom. Authorities were called and the girl was pronounced dead. Mr. Liu said he visited the public bathroom before and commented the sanitary condition is bad and it is poorly ventilated.

The official is now determining whether the death of the young girl is involved with the bathroom odour."

I can believe it. A lot of the public restrooms in China are just disgusting.

I used one in a Pizza Hut in Chongqing and it was pretty vile, especially for a franchised restaurant.

Best places to use them are more modern shopping centers if you gotta go and can't make it back to your hotel room.

I went to China this past Summer and holy shit, every fucking washroom smells fucking HORRIBLE! The worse are the public ones, you can pretty much smell them a few streets away...yes that's how disgusting the smell is. Usually when you're walking and you smell something real disgusting and rancid, it usually means theirs a public washroom nearby..

Even the restaurants are horrible and the shopping malls are pretty bad as well but they're heaven compared to the ones on the streets and at restaurants. The nicest washroom was at some 4-5star hotel, extremely clean and well-maintained.

I spent a week out in Yunnan province this summer. Didn't spend much time in the cities there, but headed straight for the countryside. Beautiful place...until i needed the bathroom.

There weren't any toilets. Just a hole you squat over. It was filthy. It was vile. It smelled like I had fallen into the most disgusting cesspool you could imagine. I expected that of the countryside though. However, the airport in Lijiang was disgusting. That was mildly surprising to me. It was just as gross as the bathroom out in the middle of nowhere. I decided to wait till i was on the plane. At least that was sorta clean. SORTA. ew.

fuck... ive heard things have changed but, i was at a more ghetto mall, and i could smell the washroom from so far. and the washroom STUNK so bad. like.. not "oh god this stinks"
