did a search and see that many of you guys manage to brought tires from discounttiredirect and than have them shipped to pt.roberts
I'm trying to do the same thing except i can't find a way to pay if i'm not using a american credit card or us paypal account?
I'm trying to pay with either my canadian mastercard or a HK visa but couldn't figure out how to.
when i get to the payment step i'm instructed to put in a us billing address or else it doesn't work....
also the name field for shipping isn't long enough to put my full name (first and middle) to make sure sumone else with the same name doesn't pick up my stuff at pt.roberts...
how did u guys order? did u have to have a us credit card? don't want to go through tireracks cause the tires i want is 40$ more expensive at tirerack lol

because the rims that i'm going to put the tires on isn't on the car yet
I was on the phone with DTD yesterday. I just put in my canadian address, but under state I just put WA and my shipping zip as my billing zip. They don't really care, the guy over the phone said it the order will still process. I think all they care about are the numbers on the credit card.
For your name, put in only your middle initial if the whole name won't fit.

^^ thanks thanks will try that later.
For the name tsb said that the package has to show the exact name that was register. Would it be ok with just the middle name as initial?
What are the chance someone else with the same name will pick up my stuff? What do they check when you go pick up your stuff? Just the name or name + phone number or whatever? It sucks to have a very common name.

For me they just asked for my name and i think my DL as well...
I would call them tomorrow morning to clarify though.

This is what I did last year:
-called up Discounttire in Tullalip (30min drive from the border.. 1 exit before the Seattle Premium Outlet) and asked them to price match the tires that I wanted on Tirerack
-Made an appointment to have the tires installed on the following week
-Drove down, they swapped the tires + balanced it
-25,000kms later (yes I drive a lot), the tires are still awesome :D
I'll be ordering some winter tires from them soon. Micheline currently has a $70 off thing if you buy 4 tires at the same time. It's stupid how the same tires (X-ice2) cost $50 more (EACH) in Canada (Costco)..
P.S. There's a bestbuy and starbucks right across from discounttire. I played MW2 on the PS3 demo machines until my car was ready!

Usually DTD is cheaper than the retail store. And they beat their own prices!
Factor in the cost for installation though. I was told that if you buy from retail store, mount and balance are free, but after PM, it will be something like $8 each.
Note: dont buy the tire warranty. They are not valid in Canada.

umm you sure?
Ive ordered tires from them online many times. You can separately fill in the billing and mailing address. Plus they take all canadian credit cards. so yeah.
I get them shipped to Blaine, WA instead of Pt. Roberts.
In the end, its still cheaper than buying locally.

I was wondering, if I'm going to declare my tires at the border (I'm not a good liar), would it still be cheaper to install the tires down in the states or bring it up and mount it here?
I thought TireRack was the place you get tires from if you're getting them in the states, but it seems that actually most of you here go for DTD instead. Are the deals better at DTD?
Besides DTD and TireRack, are there any more places I should check out? Besides Walmart, Costco, etc.

I've found a way that you can pay less tax when crossing over the border by trial and error through discount tire direct.
1. Order your tires over the phone to DTD in Bellingham and put a resonable deposit on the tires you want to order eg.. 2 tires worth $500 put a $175 deposit
2.Drive down to Bellingham and pick up in person and pay full amount ($500) and have them print out a separate invoice for your deposit return and have them write on it $175 in store discount ect ect.
3. Drive back up to the Border tell the official you paid $325 for your tires and show your receipt with your discount and pay your taxes and off you go.

Discount Tire charges $15 per tire for mounting and balancing. They say it's a "lifetime" charge, but obviously you're not going to go down there just to get them rotated - good for residents, but meaningless to us.
I just had some tires installed last month and I wasn't charged anything after declaring the total value (CBSA asked for it.) You'll only get charged HST anyway because anything that is mandatory to a car's operation (like regular tires) is duty exempt.

$118 for me but tirerack had my tire listed cheaper than DTD. comes out to be 48$ more expensive than DTD but hey at least they have it in stock (thats what their website say i hope the inventory they have on the site is updated)

Hmmm, I couldn't quite find the exact reference (I may have misquoted), but this reference should suffice. From CBSA's website under "repairs/alterations to motor vehicle/vessel/aircraft"
Repairs or alterations to your vehicle/ vessel/aircraft
If you intend to have repairs or alterations made to your vehicle/vessel/aircraft outside Canada, check with the CBSA for information before you leave. Under customs legislation, the CBSA can no longer consider your vehicle, vessel or aircraft to be Canadian-made if you increase its value, improve its condition or have it modified outside Canada. As a result, you may have to pay duty and the goods and services tax (GST) or harmonized sales tax (HST) on the entire value of the vehicle/vessel/aircraft when you bring it back.
No duty will apply to the value of the repairs or alterations made to your vehicle/vessel/aircraft in the United States, Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, Israel or another Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement beneficiary when it is re-imported into Canada; however, the GST/HST will apply.
Emergency repairs can be made to your vehicle/vessel/aircraft while you are travelling outside the country to ensure your safe return to Canada. However, to be eligible for this special provision, be sure to declare the value of all repairs and replacement parts when you return to Canada with the vehicle.
Transport Canada also has requirements for vehicles that are extensively modified. For more information, contact Transport Canada's Registrar of Imported Vehicles at 1-888-848-8240.

So what defines an alteration or repair in the eyes of the CBSA? Does the vehicle have to be out of commission initially for the change to be deemed a repair?
And alterations? Does that mean the tires have to change the manner in which the vehicle operates?
I always thought tires were just wear-and-tear items.
Hmmm and they mention the word "re-import." I'm not sure if simply driving your car across the border, then coming back counts as re-importing. Sounds like you have to export your car first to count as a re-import.

Do you guys have any problems the TLC when it comes to shipping tires/rims? Their prices seem very attractive.

Don't like the fact that TLC may leave your tires outside... and that they are quite disorganized. What's an extra $2 per tire?
At the time i bought my RT615's from them (February 2010)... the only credit card they accepted from Canadians was American Express. So shipping address was to Pt Roberts and billing address was my home address in Burnaby.

Out of curiosity, did you have them install them as well?
If so, what was the cost?
Yea, I had them install it. $16/tire, $64 total.
Tirerack has my tires $10 cheaper. I'm wondering if I can call DT and have them price match and return the difference over the phone.
I just called them yesterday to see if they could order me some tires. Dealt with a guy named "Ricky" who said that he'll call me today morning. I hope he calls back before 12 otherwise I'll have to go follow up.
They are backordered until like mid Nov. Lame.
Time to call the other three.
Just FYI,
They discount tire co takes into account shipping when price matching.
And I ended up ordering form the Burlington store since the Bellingham store said it would be Mid Nov till I got them but Burlington said it would be 3-5 Business days.

205/55/16 and they are now backordered for another two weeks.
I think I might just order them from tirerack and avoid the taxes (8.5) and have them installed in the states.
Ship to blaine, pick up and install.
It is cheaper than having them ordered from discount tire co because they take into account shipping when price matching. Going to call in tomorrow or sat to cancel my order.
97x4 = 388 + shipping to blaine (51.34) = 439.34
439.34 x conversion rate x 2.5 MC rate = around 455
Then I picking up from Hagen's is like 4x3.5= 14
455+14= 469
Installation is like 16/tire? 16x4=64
469+64=533

how much does it cost to get tires mounted here? I'm contemplating just going to discount tire. IF I order from tirerack the tires are 750 with shipping + there is a 70 dollar rebate http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/sp_events/mi/2010/10/M077_Michelin_TR.pdf
but If I buy from discount tire it's 900 fully mounted balanced warrantied etc...
Better question is where can you mount/balance the tires in the states but not buy your tires from that store?
Discount Tire. I don't think they care where you buy your tires from. It's still a service they provide.

Speaking of Discount Tire, they said they would call me back to return my deposit of 50 dollars and I have yet to hear anything.
I'm going to give them a few days and if they do not, I will give them back. If there isn't an immediate solution, I'm going to dispute the charge on my CC.
And I went to the Costco in Burlington but it seemed like they don't mount + balance tires that aren't bought at Costco. Seemed odd to me...?

Yup, I used Hagen's went this afternoon, I got 17" X-Ice 2. They emailed me and Tirerack shipped my 4 tires in 2 packages, so Hagen's only charged me for 2 packages. I saw some other tires lying around that were shipped individually, so some people might get charged for 4 packages.
Canadian customs didn't even charge me any taxes, I just declared everything and the chick told me just go and have a nice day.

I had mine shipped in 2 packages too hence the weight of 42lbs each according to UPS.

Are you having them install it in the states?
OR are you just going to bring it back up?
If you're installing, where are you heading to?
Only asking because I'm planning on picking up on Sat.
jcwhitney.com has General Arctic Altimax which are a very well regarded winter tire, especially for the money. They price match with competitors, and ship direct to Canada for a very reasonable cost (~$40-50 usd for set of 4 tires). The kicker, their shipping cost to Canada INCLUDES HST and enviro fees and what not, no idea how they do this. But on a set of 4, HST would usually run you $40+
I can get a set of 4 in 175/65/14 for about $280cdn all shipped to my door, including tax. For reference Canadian Tire sells the same tire in my size at about $130/tire reg price, plus tax of course.
I'm not sure what other brands and models they carry, but may be worth a look for those who are still thinking of ordering.

I bought 2 sets of tires from discount tire and they ended up shipping me the wrong set. So I called them and they gave me a credit back for the price of 1 tire. I kept the set because they were similar. They sent me falken 512 instead of the 912 that I ordered.

i only have one set of wheels right now, so i'm planning on bringing them back and swapping them when it gets cold enough.

did you try to book a time with discount tire?
there's a Les Schwab in bellingham across from bellis fair on meridian street. there's also sears and walmart, but i don't know if any of them are any good.
i don't think costco will do it, but you can always try. they told me that if you want them installed the same day it's best to go first thing in the morning. since it's really busy right now.

aite tires shipped to the letter carrier friday. The only thing i hate about letter carrier is they store tires outside. Anyone can steal your tires. Theres no gate protecting and nobody watching and plus its WET on the inside the tire.
Drove up the point roberts border, guard asked me how much the tires were (i didn't get the receipt so i just claimed $210). He looked at me looked at my passport and said OK your good to go

Bellingham seems pretty booked however Burlington has a very open schedule.
I think I'll give Les Schwab a call tomorrow and see how much things are going to cost first.

No duty makes sense because of the free trade agreement in place for NA.
Taxes though of 12%, yikes! How much did that turn out to be?
And yes, planning to go to Burlington and just install it there and shop around when they are installing.

30 cars at point roberts? that's crazy. they were so busy they probably just let everyone through.
i went to peace arch. tons of customs agents working. enough resources available.
Bump!
General question regarding tire/wheel sizes: Is there a way to find out the width of the wheel without knowing the brand/model? The wheels are mounted on 285/30zr20 tires right now and I want to know if 255/35ZR20 tires would fit on there without problem? Reason being the 285 tires are on backorder but I want to get the tires a.s.a.p.

Check on the back of the wheel, it should list what size it is.
Do you have it with you or is it being sold somewhere?

Sounds like the xi2 was made within North America then. Thanks

I have it downstairs. I'll check in a bit but I just want to make sure a 255 would fit without overstretching..

A 255 should fit from 8.5" to 10" so you should be fine. 285 is usually on 10" or 9.5"
Just checked. It's a 10.5" so 255 = no?
If it makes any difference the tires on there are 285/30zr20 and the ones I'm looking at are 255/35zr20

285/30R20 = 10-11" Rim Width Range
255/35R20 = 8.5-10" Rim Width Range
If yours are 10.5...I would say no.

It'll stretch a little bit, it'll be fine. Considering what others have done (215 on a 9" wheel anyone?) a .5" stretch isn't much.
Thanks a bunch!
Just ordered from JC whitney - they're awesome if you find the right tire/size for your need. I paid $657(tax, duties included) shipped to my door, whereas the same tires from tire rack shipped to PR were the same price(not including tax/duties/ time to drive there).

Did you take advantage of the 15% off purchase of $150 or more coupon?
Or the free shipping on orders over $75? (probably only works for shipping within USA only)

FML I forgot to check for coupons. They only allow one promo code so I got the free shipping one for now. I'm gonna call in and get them to apply the 15% deal instead.
Just got off the live chat from their website and I gotta say they have great service. Easily accessible without having to email/call and they put in the new code without question.
