Mountain goat 'kills hiker' in Olympic National Park

A hiker has died after being attacked by a mountain goat in the US state of Washington, officials have said.

Robert Boardman was gored in the leg by the goat while out walking on Saturday with his wife and a friend on Klahhane Ridge in Olympic National Park.

The 63-year-old was transported by US Coast Guard helicopter to a hospital in Port Angeles, where he was pronounced dead.

Rangers later killed the goat, which was known for its aggressive behaviour.

Barb Maynes, park spokeswoman, told the Peninsula Daily News that in the past rangers had tried "hazing" the ram - inducing it to be frightened of people - by shooting it with bean bags and throwing rocks.

But there had been no reports of any incidents which would have warranted killing the goat, she added.

Witnesses said Mr Boardman, his wife and friend had stopped for lunch on Klahhane Ridge when the ram appeared and moved towards them.

Mr Boardman tried to shoo the animal away but it instead attacked him. After goring the hiker the goat stood over him, and had to be pelted with rocks by a ranger before finally moving away.

Some 300 mountain goats live in Olympic National Park. Found only in North America, they usually stand about 3ft (0.9m) at the shoulder and can weigh up to 300lbs (136kg).

That's my biggest concern when hiking in the backcountry; encountering a large, wild animal. Bears, cougars, mountain goats, hell, even a moose can kill you.

I've never hiked anywhere in Olympic National Park, but I've seen mountain goats in Jasper National Park, and they can be pretty sizeable. They're not exactly perturbed by humans in close proximity either.

As someone posted once on another forum in response to a "nature owns man" topic: "The laws of nature do not bend to keep idiots alive, even if the laws of man do."

Carry bear bangers to scare em off, it should frighten off most animals.

I had the exact same thoughts. For some reason, I was just picturing a regular goat except with longer horns. Then I saw the pictures...Absolutely massive beasts.

In bear country, someone in the group usually has bear bangers. I personally make the occasional holler and bang my trekking poles together often. Bear bells on the other hand I CANNOT FUCKING STAND. People with those on their packs need to be shot. :lol

I've hiked in wild boar country in California, and believe me, that's another type of wild animal you really don't want to bump into in the middle of nowhere.

If any of you have seen Jackass 3D, there is a Ram in there that is pissed and taking names. I would not want to cross paths with one of these animals!

I don't get it - the hiker got his leg smashed up, which ended up being fatal? Something's missing...

Mass blood loss in the middle of nowhere. A hematoma can be fatal let alone severing an artery. Breaking your femur can also be fatal.

The problem with a gun is unless its a freaking rifle if you shot one of these guys in the head (or a bear or a moose) the bullet might just ricochet off the head.. They have really thick skulls and if the angle isnt right on it will just bounce off..
