Hey guys,

I've never run wireless before for my main PC but unfortunately I was forced to due to the constraints of new apartment.

I'm running the D-Link DIR-655 for the router, and running a D-Link DWA-552 wireless card.

I'm running a Windows 7 64 on a Q6600, 4 gig ram, Asus P5K mobo and using Telus High-Speed Turbo.

I'm basically getting very inconsistent speeds. I cannot game, can barely download anything. It'll get like ok speeds (150ish kB/s) for like 15 seconds then slow right down to 1kB/s. Average speed I'm getting is 15ish kB/s. I have 100% signal strength. The router is basically in the next room. I used to run wireless in my old apartment with my ex's laptop and it never seemed to have issues. But then again I never really used her comp.

I did a little research and updated the network card drivers to the newest ones with no luck. Should I been upgrading firmware on the modem?

I tested my other computer which is hardwired and the speed was fine and consistent. So that rules out that it's a telus issue.

I ran speedtest.net on the main comp and got a ping of 440ms and <1Mb/s dl speed and ran a few other times and ran between 12-16ms and 1.5 to 3 Mb/s. All shitty. My old comp which is hardwired is getting 8ms ping, and 13+ Mb/s.

Anyone have any suggestions before I smash my comp due to frustrations. I remember people telling me wireless speeds are almost the same as wired speeds.

go into your telus settings and register the mac address of the router on the telus site, this is possible by hard wiring ur computer into the router directly.

OR

ask telus to send you their own wireless router/modem combo. its a lot better and pretty fast.

I originally ran their modem/router combo. It kinda sucked and the speeds were pretty shitty too.

I "think" its the network card. Might just need to run a cable accross the apartment to this comp. Kind of gay considering everyones saying wireless is spose to be as fast

Might be the router
My dlink I got brand new would always dc me after 5min ping of 400+
I upgrade the firmware and that didn't do much
I read up on the router and ddwrt support it, flash that on my router and it fix 90% of my problem

Call telus first and for most and complain. They can up your internet speed if you do.

Also are you sure no one else is piggy backing on your connection?

Plug your lap top right into the modem and test your speed again. Wireless is never as fast as wired.

His wired machine has fast connection to the Internet, so it's strictly an internal problem, nothing to do with Telus.

You say you have 100% signal strength, but what is the link speed that it's connected at?

Try changing the wifi channel the router is running on. Maybe your apartment neighbour is using the exact same channel and is causing interference.

THIS. I had the same issue when I first bought my dir 655, I changed the channel and its been smooth sailing since

Oh yeah, now that I think about it again, the default setting for the DIR-655 is set for channel auto scan or something, and I've had terrible experiences with that as well. Disable that and just pick a specific channel.

I'm on channel 6 (whatever that means). I see someone else using channel 6 also. But signal strength is like half. I'll try changing the channel.

Thanks for the tips guys. Hope it works. I kinda gave up and hardwired this morning. Works 10x better

There are 11 WIFI channels, 1 - 11. Certain channels overlap, i.e. 2 & 3. Channels 1, 6, and 11 do not overlap. Use 1 of those. If your neighbours are using 1 and 6, use 11.

or you can use this to scan your area for commonly used channel. Then just pick one that no one else use.
