No, it is not safe. It can blow when you least expect it. Don't take the risk, spend the $100 and replace it.

sora't has some affordable tires and they can get pretty much any tire that you need. If it's just one you should just replace that one with the same thing

christiankirana

yeah, only need 1..

Had already thought of this method but some people said sidewall can't be repaired..

WORST ADVICE EVER.

you can not repair sidewall damage to a tire.

if the damage was in the tread, you would be able to use a plug or patch and plug but NOT on the sidewall.

since you can clearly see steel cords through the sidewall i would highly recommend replacing the tire.

Any time you see exposed/damaged belts especially on the sidewall it's best to replace the tire. Tire plugs as depicted above are for temporary repairs only.

Sidewall damage = useless tire. Better off recycling it and getting a new/used tire.

BJAutohaus would not recommend or even offer to patch your tire if you have sidewall damage, its not safe to drive after that. Buy a new tire.

You do know it is illegal to repair a sidewall damaged tire.

so your advice is totally useless and illegal.

Looks like he's just getting all pissy because he posted stupid advice, and was failed for it.

Rule of thumb:
Tread, Fixable.
Shoulder/Sidewall. Get a New tire.

Well. It's not even rule of thumb. It's common sense that you can't fix a shoulder/sidewall.

225/50/17 tires are really cheap, I'd just get a new one and not risk it.

Damn 2 bills? I guess the urgency prevents you from shopping in the states and what not... but that still seems a bit steep imo

From Tire Rack the tire was still $169, I checked. So really that price was not bad.

Those Goodyear OEM tires are stupid expensive...

that's the cheapest I can get over here. even on discountiredirect, they gave me 190USD after tax but without balancing and mounting.

if shipped to point roberts, it will be 190USD.

Yeah, my bad on that. Didn't realize the tire model was actually posted so I just saw the dimensions and the price.

On a semi-related note, is it just me or has the tire pricings become more competitive (locally vs across the border). When I picked up my tires, the difference was <$100, granted that that was after some price matching / haggling.

christiankirana
10-26-2010, 11:03 AM
correction: it is still way cheaper in US as I can get it for around 220 for mount, balance. BJ A quote me 201 yesterday for all in. but this morning they called me back and said that they forgot to add shipping and broker fee which ends up very close to 300 bucks..

lesson learnt: if you want to get a brand new tire, get your lazy ass to Point Roberts..

You're going to get the guy killed.

Here's the even more stupid part that nobody's mentioned: that plug repair hit is meant to PLUG HOLES and STOP LEAKS. The OP doesn't have a HOLE or a LEAK, he has a chunk of rubber ripped out of the sidewall. Even if he did decide to try to repair the tire himself, that kit wouldn't do it.

Edit: BTW, did you read ALL of the BC4x4 page that you linked to? The very last paragraph:

"In case you are using high performance tires on a high performance ML55 or ML430 or you drive your ML320 like a ML55 - this kit should only be used to get to a tire repair shop. Since there is a lot of "flex" in the sidewall area it is extremely unsafe to permanently plug or patch tires on high performance vehicles."
