A highly caffeinated, but legal alcoholic drink was responsible for a mass overdose that sent nine Central Washington students to the hospital and led to an investigation of whether the party-goers had been drugged, police said today.

Police said some 50 students became sick after consuming large amounts of the controversial but legal beverage Four Loko, which combines as much alcohol found in a six pack of beer with as much caffeine in two cups of coffee.

The university announced at a news conference today in Ellensburg, Wash., that the blood-alcohol content of students ranged from .12 percent to .35 percent. In Washington, 0.08 is the legal limit for intoxication.

Nine students were hospitalized after the Oct. 8 party at a house where about 50 people had been drinking.

Police called to the scene of the house party, in Rosyln, Wash., about 30 miles from the university, found young people – many of them women – passed out throughout the house and on the front lawn.

Authorities at the time said they did not believe incident was a result of heavy drinking, but that someone had surreptitiously slipped drugs, possibly date rape drugs, into people's drinks.

Four Loko has been banned from several college campuses after students became ill.

well i typed in "four loko bellingham" and the first result on google was this story! turns out the kids were only 18-20 years old and rarely drink...

im pretty sure a seasoned vet and heavy drinker such as myself could tackle a couple of these bad boys!!!

even at 4%, that's 115.5 ml of alcohol in a 6-pack. A can of Loko has 84 ml at most.

This is just stupid sensationalist news reporting. A bunch of people who don't drink much decided to drink too much, and that's all there is to it.

RS tricked me I bought 2 and chugged both and got fuckin tossed just done completely

its sweet (in a unnatural kind of way) and the caffeine makes you feel fine then before you know you are drunk.

this 4 loko shit is cheap too. you can buy it from any gas station for no more than 3 something. (The shell at Birch Bay sells it for 3.28)

Also they didnt even know that it was a alcholic drink when I bought it, commented that I must really like energy drinks. No ID and for a asian guy that speaks volumes XD

I consider myself a semi heavy drinker too but I took this drink too light and drank it down wayy too fast one after another

but i am definetly buying some of these....it takes a lot to get me drunk (im only 6'0, 170lbs) but when i pre drink to go to a club...me and 1 other will down a 26 of vodka in a time limit of 30 minutes...not that hard to do anymore....

I went down south yesterday and bought 8, they didn't have much selection so grabbed some other cans that are like 4 lokos. Good shit, watermelon wasn't that bad. So it was a very vague and failed experiment ... I ended up downing about 3/4 of the can in 1 minute... but then I don't know how exactly how much it affected me because I followed that up with about 8 shots of Goose and 3 more beers, the free-flowing Sake ... needless to say I was DONE lol but I think the Four Loko definitely boosted my alcohol level!
