The locals usually open late late november, or early december.
Depending on how thw weather works out the locals might see an early start, the freezing level has been good, but the weather cycles aren't cooperating.
The snow that fell the last few days was a small taste of what's to come.
Whistler usually opens up american thanksgiving, along with sunpeaks opening up nov 25th as well.
Expect mt baker to open roughly the same time as well.
What you can do in the mean while to build up your shred legs is to hike mt baker mid november. Which is what we normally do.
Ride for a littl bit, and hike back up. Its a great way to get in shape.
For off mountain riding focus, spend your time off the hille working your core. Its more essential than your legs as you will find that your core will be that crucial element to having the mobility for everything surrounding the sport.
Legs come after :)

Good luck with that. After my first 2 hours, I could still barely keep my board pointed in the right direction for more than 20 feet before wiping out from losing control or just catching a random edge. Get yourself some wrist guards for sure. Luckily I consider myself a somewhat fast learner, was able to link some turns by the end of my first day. Did I ever hurt the next morning though, but it was SOOO much fun.
Last season was more or less a writeoff for me unfortuneately, but hoping to get some good runs on the new pow board I got last season, and I picked up an Option Sansalone late last season as my main board for this season, so I'm stoked to give that a try as well!

I would def recommen doing an all day lesson. I did that here (it was split into two 2 hour sessons with a lunch break in between) and even then I was usin the pendulum to ride down the hill..... which really hurts the knees fyi. The more lesson you can do the better.

Its tough to want to learn, I'll admit it. I hate learning something when I know I could be having fun at the same time. Watching other people just go do something that looks so easy is discouraging. Its basic elementary really.
However if you have a group of friends that are at the same skill level as you and feel like they all can improve their skills equally then take 3 of your closest friends and hire an instructor. Either through a mountain or "otherwise" what you'll find is that the 3 of you will then be able to focus on the task at hand, laugh at the same time, and feel less discouraged when something amiss happens.
That could lead you to a super successful season, where you'll then realize that snowboarding/skiing is really worth the effort involved!
Once it becomes somewhat second nature for you, you'll want to go all the time, and then redirect your life around it. Move to whistler, party it up, sleep in your own puke......okay, maybe not that last bit, but its worth it!

haha great advice. thanks for that, though it wont apply much since my buddies have been riding since they were kids. i'm sure they'll push me to ride better and harder too. partying at the end would be a nice way to end the night, thats for sure.

Get yourself some wrist guards for sure.
Not a good idea. Yes, it might save you from a broken wrist on a lighter fall - but if you fall hard - the wrist guard will break your arm instead. A broken wrist is MUCH easier to heal and hurts a hellova lot less...
Vangruver
11-04-2010, 09:41 AM
Or, learning to fall being the main priority when learning the ropes on the slopes (hey I can rhyme)
When I coached, I specifically taught everyone various ways to fall prior to even getting on the chair. Once you know the right way to fall, and yes there is a wrong way, the learning becomes less discouraging and you inevitably wear less protective gear when you ride.
However all that becomes eliminated when the hills turn to sheets of ice. Even with that kind of condition its virtually impossible to fall properly

yes because then your board just slips out from under you :( This happened to me last season and I landed on my tailbone and had to just lay there at least 5-10 mins before I could move again. I thought I had re-injured myself and would be out for the rest of the season... thank god not

Nope, but it does teach you the proper balance points realy quick! If you can muster 2 solid 6 hour days riding ice, then you have the balance for everything!

Yes and no. Depends on how you like to learn. I need to fall to learn, and learn on my own. Never took a lesson, which may explain my lack of progression the last few seasons. For some, what is shown during a lesson may not relate at all and be quite hard to follow and imitate. It may be easier to just 'go for it' and figure out what works for you. I know if I had done a full day lesson my first time up, I would be super frustrated.
I'm quite happy with the level I ride at, any more and I fear I may put myself back into risk of injury like back when I was skiing.
re: wristguards. I stand by that for beginners/novice they are essential. You will likely not be falling hard enough to break your arm, but you will very likely fall hard enough to hurt your wrists if not protected. My biggest issues at first were unexpectedly catching edges so I couldn't prepare or fall properly. Once you get good enough to launch some big airs and get up to a good clip, your risk of catching a surprise edge is low and you know how to confidently fall properly, then you can leave the wrist guards at home because then they do become a BIT more of a liability.

fucking bullshit! lol
Last year we opened two weeks early because they got 60 cm of snow in one week
actually this is our report
Alpine Snow Depth
Updated at 5:30AM on November 9
Located at the top of Crystal Chair (2061m / 6762') 0.0 cm / 0.0 in
Mid Mountain Snow Depth
Updated at 8:50AM on November 9
Located at the top of the Sunburst Express (1855m / 6086') 20.1 cm / 7.9 in
crystal is the higher of the two. Sunburst is the bubble chair at the bottom that you take if you want to get to the crystal chair. I assume it's snow making

Higher elevations don't always equate to more snow or more snow fall. Its also the weather and the system that moves around it that gives the detail of where and when the snow falls

Personal report from the locals, seymour and cypress are getting snowed on at this very moment.
Rule of thumb, its a rough 5 degree difference between sea level and the local hills, so if its 5-8 degrees in the city, its most likely snowing on the hills. That is if its not during an inversion. Then its all messed up

oh it's fully worth it.
The 711 discounts are only not as good as what you get for the edge cards.
BUT the thing is, whistler will only open about 25% of their mountain, with 1-3 chairs at the most.
Friday will be the better of the weekend days, but the line ups are going to be pretty attrocious.
If you're jonesing like the rest of lower mainland, do it. but i'd hold off your discount days for a truly epic pow/gnar/bluebird day

As taken from cypressmountain.com's website.
I only predict the e-z rider bunny chair slope area though.
Doesn't seem too enticing.
The weather forecast is looking great for a possible early start this weekend! Snow is expected to start to fall Tuesday night and continue on until Friday night. 50cm of snow is forecasted with excellent snowmaking weather following the snowfall. Our mountain operations crews are in full set up mode for a Saturday morning opening on November 20th. Hours of operation would be 9am to 4pm in both the Alpine and Nordic areas. We will try to open as much terrain as conditions allow, so stay tuned the website for further details as we approach the start of our 27th Winter Season!

the snow turn to ice yet?
was just at grouse today, cause its the only place my car could probably make it.
anyways... conditions were better than i originally thought. snow was pretty soft for the *VERY* few runs that were open, patches of powder scattered from the snow machines.
towards the very end of the night, a bit of ice formed up in some areas but majority of it was still pretty nice.
one of the main runs that goes towards the quad chair isn't open because parts of it still got little bushes protruding, but we decided to explore it and there is lots of good powder there with a thin frozen "crust". this would be a good spot to build a jump and just go for big air with little physical backlash.
i don't think i snow will turn to ice that easy or fast, it was -10C for a majority of the day, and i don't think temperatures are gonna dip for a little while... at least i hope not. BUT MORE SNOW PLZ!!!!1!!1 real snow

Heading up to Big White tomorrow for the weekend... hoping it's not too crowded but apparently they had the busiest opening day for a long time.
it seems like all the local mountains (grouse, seymour, cypress) just got hit with 30cm+ of snow. i just hope temperatures don't go above freezing point.
edit: Vangruver: what kind of board do you ride now and which ones have you ridden in the past? just reading your posts from over a while it seems like you do lots of tricks and what no. i've got a long power board but am thinkin of switching up to something a lot more flexible, mine is only good for the half pipe but not rails or jumps, hard to initiate spin.

In my quiver now, i have a newer lib tech skate banana, which is a 152cm. It's stiffer overall than the first generation banana. A reverse camber board. Very mild in regards to torsional stiffness, but very poppy, meaning that once compressed, it will rebound quickly. But not overly stiff to discourage turn inititation or edge to edge transfer.
I also have an older ride DH 159, narrow waist twin tip shape with bi-radial side cut. STIFF board, charges well, pop is amazing and very solid board for charging bigger jumps.
Those are the only two boards in my current stash, I had more, ridden more. just need to think of them at the moment.
I'll post another reply in regards to that.
Lemme get back to you.

I guess our priorities are different.
I never need any hardgoods, I'm always a fan of that search for the right soft goods. Its been a while since I've excersized my options for clothes since clothes are clothes and I am a huge purveyor of non-trendy stuff. In any case, the accessories there would make for good xmas gifts so why not?

You're only bet is to buy the gold card, its the new name for the ski card that gives you one free ticket and discounts everyother time you go play.
As for the slowest days? Tuesdays through thursdays. Before noon.

But its going to be a shit show after xmas when people get their new gear and the mountains open up for night riding, while it won't be as bad as weekends you're still goping to wait to play

Just like driving, you rear end someone you are at fault.
Then you pull over, get her number, call it a day, and call her later.
Or you spray her for being a douche

Their online shop office was closed when I received it because it was new years eve and then the weekend so I need to wait til tomorow to see what they're going to do in order to get me an actual set of bindings. They better get their shit together soon as I wanna ride and of course its blue bird days following some crazy snowfall and I'm sidelined until this is resolved.

Where should I go to learn how to board?
I went to whistler with fam. and they're all pretty experienced ... I sucked hard and got essentially stuck on blackcomb mountain (Went upto the second stop on the gondola, as high as it'll go before its chairlifts only) and it was just brutal from the get-go. It was rewarding, I had a half decent 25-30 second run of no falling before it was all over, but near the end I was exhausted from constantly falling and getting back up.
What's a good mountain to go learn on? I have no gear besides snow pants and a waterproof jacket.
The 30 seconds of boarding I had without falling was pretty intoxicating, I wanna do it again, but it's eff-ing hard. Where to learn, revscene!?

grouse or cypress bunny hill. although ive never been to grouse, but heard the cut is pretty good to learn since its so wide and you wont get in the way of people.
plus at cypress you can learn how to get on and off the lift at the bunny hill. just ask for advice if its your first time on/off the operators there are usually friendly.
EDIT: i would not go to seymour to learn. 1 being the bunny hill is really short and you have to use a rope tow to get back up. and also it gets quite busy up there. where as cypress has more runs/lifts so even if there are more ppl in total at cypress its more spread out than seymour.

Bang for your buck? Seymour.
Why? Because it's cheap, the rentals are cheap, the hill is not as pretentious as cypress or grouse, and the rope tow is the most fundamental place to learn how to snowboard.
Contrary to popular belief, a rope tow will teach you the bare bare essentials on learning how to snowboard. you will not learn as quickly on a chair lift as you'll fall on your ass plenty of times getting on and off of the chair.
Will you fall on a rope tow? yep, i guarantee you will. But once you learn how to one foot slide on a snowboard, you'll be able to skoot your way towards a chair onto a chair, and also get yourself in the position towards learning the where, why and how of weight positioning.
After that? when you get the essentials down, you can take your skill to a chair, then it will be rewarding as all hell once it all transfers to you.
If you don't have access to a car, grouse is your next best option...why? it's transit accessible. a few buses to the loop and you're taking a tram to the mountain. It's not that expensive, and it's reasonably fun there as well.
Cypress is a mountain that I've found to be a fashion show hill. Where you can find people dawning the latest and greatest gear, who don't know how to snowboard all that well. But it offers you the longest runs of all the shore hills, but it comes with a price. As it is the most expensive hill to flock too.
One last thing you'd want to consider......is the willingness to want to learn. Accepting pain, and continuing to try again. And knowing when to call it quits. As you can get hurt quickly if you get tired.

if you don't know how to go straight to use a rope tow with a foot out, how would you learn how to get off a chair? since you have to use the same skills.
if you're anything like me, I hate it when the chair slows or stops.
and No I'm not pointing any figures, but for those that don't know how to get off the chair, a lifty does have to stop or slow it so that they can move quickly out of the way.
So if you don't know how to skate, or move yourself with one foot out of the board, how are you going to get on and off the chair?
I can imagine the look of disgust on some of your faces as you're reading it, but it's quotes for truth.

Totally agree with you about the ski lift slowing down.
However, the chair lift is better. at least if you fall, you are already up at the top. if you fall halfway up the rope toe, youre pretty much stuck.
also, if you are at the bunny hill, you should expect the chair lift to be slow and will stop quite often.

Get one that fits. Some helmets I've bought in the past give me a headache after about 30 mins of riding because of pressure in random places and no pressure in other random places so really take your time in picking the right one just like when you picked out your boot!

at every base of whistler, they rent out all the gear. From the entry level learning gear all the way to the higher end stuff.
They most likely will offer rentals of helmets as well.
However if I were you, i'd bug anyone yo know that has skiied or snowboarded before to see if you can borrow goggles and any other accessories that aren't being used.
Goggles, and gloves are normally the things that aren't offered for rental....however you could rent clothing if you don't have any. [however i wouldn't bank on it]

you should always wear a helmet as you never know when you're going to catch an edge wrong and go down. I ALWAYS wear a helmet after getting my concussion...
at the beginning of this season my friends were riding with this girl who ended up hitting her head in the wrong spot and started convulsing/seizuring and I guess was really close to dying. She wasn't even doing any tricks in the park, just riding regular runs...

they really should make it mandatory, look at the actress who died after hitting her head while skiing a few years back. I used to be of the mind set then unless you were hitting the park or doing tricks you didn't need a helmet but after my bail I made sure to get one. Some of my friends are of that mindset too but for the ones with the girl that almost died it made them think a little harder

oddly enough, i have 3 helmets sitting in my gear bag.
I kept picking them up after my favorite helmet got stolen out of my car a few years back.
I used to wear them religiously when Protec made the silver chrome helmets in 97-98....used to wear one everyday, and everywhere.
Then i finally got a new one, and oddly enough, after it got stolen from my car, i refused to wear it.....got a couple given to me, and went and bought another helmet last summer, but only wear it when i need to for park sessions.

^yeah,
I took a serious look at the fat cat when I was doing research for my ski/snowboard carrier. Figured that I usually drive in town with very rare long distance trips; makes the gas saving pretty low. The one interior mountain trip I do every year is rare enough to nullify it.

edge cards are fully cheaper than the 711 pass, the more days you buy ahead of time, the cheaper the regular days are.
711 discounted tickets are usually 8 - 12 bucks off of the regular pass, however they have no expiration date, you can use them till the last regular day of the season, NOT applicable for glacier riding.
