This past March in British Columbia, two teenage boys — 16 and 18 — raped and killed 18-year-old Kimberly Proctor before mutilating and burning her body under a bridge. When it was over, the 16-year-old told a friend on World of Warcraft what they'd done.

The reason the teen picked WoW was because it was apparently something he could not say over MSN chat. The teen confessed to the murder and even sent newspaper links covering the crime. Not showing any remorse, he added that committing the brutal murder did not feel like he thought it would.

The attack was pre-planned through online chats and text messaging, with both teens devising code words and brainstorming on how they'd carry out the murder. Proctor was picked because she was, according to one of the teens, "an easy target". The Vancouver Sun has a detailed timeline of the events that transpired.

Pundits are looking for explanations, and video games are an easy way to explain the horrific crime. "You don't know which aggressive kid is going to take the fantasies of video games and try them out in reality," Bonnie Leadbeater, a psychology professor at the University of Victoria, tells CTV News. "You just can't predict those very rare occurrences."

The Ottawa Citizen's reporting opens with this sentence, "One of the teens who raped and killed 18-year-old Kimberly Proctor was a self-described 'nihilistic atheist' whose father was a convicted criminal, while the other was an avid gamer who lived with his parents." Imagine that, a teenager who was an avid gamer and who lived with his parents? That sounds incredibly normal.

What these teenagers did, however, wasn't. There are deeper, more troubling issues here at work than playing video games. One of the teens said he had dreamed of killing someone since he was young.

The two teenage boys are in a B.C. courtroom, where they are on trail for the crime. If they are sentenced as adults, they could get life. If they are sentenced as minors, they would get ten years in prison.

This is messed up..

UPDATE by Presto:

Killers have been sentenced to life. Parole eligibility in 10 years :P

Kimberly Proctor's teen killers get adult sentences
wo B.C. teenage boys who admitted to first-degree murder in the horrific death of Kimberly Proctor were sentenced as adults for their crimes Monday.

The boys' identities had been protected by a publication ban under stipulations in the Youth Criminal Justice Act. However, B.C. Supreme Court Judge Robert Johnston lifted the ban Monday.

Cameron Alexander Moffatt, 18, and Kruse Hendrick Wellwood, 17, were sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 10 years.

In handing down his sentence, Johnston said the boys should remain jailed for as long as possible due to the brutal nature of their crime, and the fact that they may never be rehabilitated.

In court, Johnston said both teens should be held responsible for the crime despite implicating each other following their arrests in June.

"Each of these young men has tended to minimize his participation," Johnston said. "It's not really possible to sort out the truth here. It is not safe to make any firm findings on the available evidence here."

But he said he found "each was a full and willing participant."

Last October, the boys pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and indignity to human remains after admitting to luring Proctor to a Victoria-area home and then sexually assaulting and killing her. The boys, then 16 and 17 years of age, then mutilated her body with a knife.

When the boys pleaded guilty last fall, Crown prosecutor Peter Juk read a five-page agreed statement of facts into the court record, which showed how the boys discussed, via text messages and online chats, how they would lure, rape and then kill Proctor.

After Proctor died, the boys stored her body in a freezer in the home's garage overnight. The next morning, the boys packed it into a duffle bag, boarded a bus and dumped it near the Galloping Goose trail in Colwood. Before leaving they set Proctor's body on fire.

Proctor's body was discovered later that day -- May 19, 2010 -- but it took three days to identify her remains. An autopsy showed the girl died of asphyxiation from duct tape that was placed over her mouth.

According to the agreed statement of facts, Proctor knew the boys through school and had communicated with both extensively via text and online. Proctor had previously rebuffed both boys' romantic overtures.

The day before her murder, Proctor agreed to meet the boys under the pretence they wanted to explain why they had recently been mean to her.

When they arrived at the 16-year-old's house, the boys bound Proctor's ankles and wrists, stuck a sock into her mouth and sexually assaulted her for hours.

Johnston told the court Monday that words could not adequately describe the inhumane way the boys treated Proctor and the suffering she endured.

The girl's parents, Fred and Lucia Proctor, were in court Monday and issued statements to reporters when the proceedings were over.

"I don't even like to call them animals because Kim was just such an animal lover," said Lucia Proctor. "To me, they're just monsters."

Fred Proctor said it is his hope that the boys do not get released from prison.

"These guys, these animals, aren't (able to be) rehabilitated," he said. "They deserve to die a long, slow, horrific, painful death."

Later Monday, details emerged that Wellwood's own father once killed a teenage girl.

In 2001, Wellwood was seven years old when his father, Robert Dezwaan, murdered 16-year-old Cherish Oppenheim.

After a 17-hour police interrogation, Dezwaan led investigators to the girl's body, which he had partially buried in a remote area near Merritt, B.C.

Dezwaan picked up Oppenheim at a gas station, the two had sex, and then he hit her on the head with a rock before strangling her from behind.

Dezwaan is still serving prison time for Oppenheim's murder.

Forensic psychologist Steven Hart of Simon Fraser University said his father's crime would have had an impact on Wellwood. However, even before his father's arrest, Wellwood exhibited violent behaviour such as setting fires and striking his mother.

"What's very clear from some of the research that's been done is there is a behavioural genetic contribution to crime or violent crime," Hart told CTV News."

"That we can see there is a family history of crime and violence, even when people are adopted away and raised by different parents."

Although they were sentenced as adults, Wellwood and Moffatt are eligible for parole after 10 years under provisions in the Youth Criminal Justice Act. However, a spokesperson for B.C.'s Criminal Justice Branch told The Canadian Press that there is no guarantee they will be granted parole and may very well remain jailed for life.

Here's some more details from the Vancouver Sun (http://www.vancouversun.com/news/teenage+boys+used+texting+online+chats+plot+brutal +assault+murder/3735225/story.html).:

Two teenagers pleaded guilty Wednesday afternoon to the first-degree murder of 18-year-old Kimberly Proctor, whose badly burned body was found under a bridge on the Galloping Goose Trail in March, admitting in chilling detail to planning and executing her rape and murder.

Under tight security, a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old — who was 17 at the time Proctor was killed — were led into a packed courtroom at B.C. Supreme Court and placed in separate booths. Both stood, lawyers by their side, and pleaded guilty to the crime that RCMP investigators had described as "horrendous" and "disturbing."

The plea by the 16-year-old, a skinny teen who appeared nervous and subdued, was inaudible. His defence lawyer, Robert Jones, had to repeat his guilty plea.

The teens also pleaded guilty to indignity to human remains. It is expected that charges of sexual assault and forcible confinement will be stayed by the Crown at their next appearance.

Neither of the boys can be named as their identities are shielded under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Neither teen looked at the other during the 40-minute proceeding. Their families did not appear to be in the packed courtroom, nor did their usual group of friends.

Sheriffs blocked off the front row of the courtroom for security reasons. The second row was filled with grim-faced investigators and members of Proctor's family including her mother Lucia, father Fred, her aunt Jo-Anne Landolt and both sets of her grandparents.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Robert Johnston accepted the guilty pleas, and ordered the teens detained in custody. Johnston issued a no-contact order, prohibiting the teens from contacting three people who could be called as witnesses at future hearings.

Johnston also ordered pre-sentence and psychiatric reports required for sentencing. These will take about eight weeks to prepare and will be heard in court when a two-week sentencing hearing begins on March 28. At previous court appearances, Crown prosecutor Peter Juk filed notice to have the 16-year-old and 18-year-old sentenced as adults, which would mean a stiffer penalty.

As part of the proceedings Wednesday, Juk read a five-page statement of agreed-upon facts into the court record, signed by both Crown and defence lawyers, that set out the gruesome facts of what happened to Proctor on March 18.

As Juk read the details, Fred Proctor began to cry, wiping tears from his eyes. Sitting pressed beside him, his wife bowed her head and held tightly to his hand.

The grim statement makes clear that the teenage boys planned Proctor's death well in advance.

Through text messages and online chats, they created code words to initiate the attack, outlined how they would tie her up and assault her, discussed what types of fuel to use to burn her body, and drew up a map of possible places to dispose of her body.

The statement suggests that the two killers were not remorseful about what they did. After they raped and asphyxiated Proctor, and then mutilated and burned her body, the 16-year-old met up with his girlfriend and the 18-year-old went shopping and for brunch with his mother.

But the statement is short on details for a motive. Proctor had flirted with both boys in the fall of 2009 before declining their advances; they killed her four months later.

According to online chats with a female friend outlined in the statement, the 16-year-old offered two reasons for the murder. First, Proctor was "an easy target." Second, "he had dreamed about killing someone ever since he was young," although he admitted to the friend that "it didn't feel like what he thought it would."

Proctor, a Grade 12 student, was reported missing after she didn't show up at a babysitting job the afternoon of March 18. She had been last seen at 10:30 a.m. at the bus exchange in Colwood, talking to the two boys who would later kill her.

When Proctor could not be reached on her cellphone and did not return home, friends and family began a desperate search, putting up posters and handing out photos of her wearing a distinctive black sweatshirt with a large number 13 decal on the front.

On the evening of March 19, a body was found beneath a bridge over Millstream Creek. The body had been burned beyond recognition, and it would take a few days to positively identify Proctor through dental records.

According to the agreed statement of facts, Proctor knew her killers through school. In the summer and fall of 2009, Proctor had dated one of the 16-year-old's best friends. During that time, the 16-year-old talked to Proctor online through MSN chat and text messages. At times, their correspondence was "quite personal and intimate." When Proctor broke off with her boyfriend, the 16-year-old asked her to go out with him. At first she accepted but, shortly after, she called it off.

From May to November, the 18-year-old also chatted with Proctor on MSN. The chats were, at times, "quite flirtatious and suggestive," according to the statement. Although she participated in the chats, Proctor declined his advances.

On March 16, two days before Proctor went missing, the 16-year-old sent a text message to a female friend, asking: "What would your opinion be on me if I killed, raped or brutalized someone?"

The next night, the 16-year-old sent Proctor a message, telling her he wanted to meet her in person the next day and explain why he, the 18-year-old and "everyone" had been mean to her lately.

They agreed to meet at 10 a.m. the next day. They exchanged phone numbers. Then Proctor and the 16-year-old had a lengthy telephone conversation that ended on the early morning of March 18.

Without her knowledge, the 16-year-old had allowed the 18-year-old to listen in on the conversation.

The two teens communicated online. "In their exchange of computer messages, they discussed their plan to lure her to the 16-year-old's house, to seduce her, bind her, sexually assault her, murder her, then burn and dispose of her body. It was a plan they had discussed before," according to the agreed statement of fact.

"Their plan, as detailed in their text messages, included specifically planning when and where to meet, how to get money and buy a specific brand of fuel with which to burn the body, how to get back to the 16-year-old's house, whether to take the bus or walk, what buses to take, and what they would say and do to carry out their attack, including the use of code words to initiate the attack. Their text messages included graphic descriptions of how they would bind and sexually assault Kimberly Proctor over an extended period of time, and a discussion of various possible sites at which to dispose of her body, including making reference to a detailed annotated map they created for this purpose."

On the morning of March 18, they met Proctor at the bus exchange. The 18-year-old went to a store to buy fuel, then the three went back to the 16-year-old's house, arriving just after 11 a.m.

The boys attacked Proctor, grabbing her around the neck, binding her hands and ankles with duct tape. Her mouth was gagged by a sock and secured with duct tape. The teens removed her clothes.

During the next several hours, both youths repeatedly sexually assaulted Proctor while she was bound and gagged. She was beaten and kicked.

"She was choked and suffocated and eventually died. A knife was used to mutilate her body," said the statement. When Proctor's body was recovered, investigators found a plastic bag covering her head, and noticed her neck was injured from attempted strangulation.

After the youths killed her, they placed her body in a freezer in the garage of the 16-year-old's house.

At 6:24 p.m., the 16-year-old sent three text messages to Proctor's phone: "Hey"/ "I thought you had babysitting"/ "Did you finish early." Proctor would have been at his home at the time, although it's not clear if she was alive or dead when the messages were sent.

Later that night, over a period of about three hours, the 18-year-old sent text messages to another female high school student with whom he'd had a sexual relationship, trying to convince her to sneak out of her house and join him at the 16-year-old's house. These messages were sent while Proctor's body was at the house.

The next morning, the boys put Proctor's body and the fuel from the house into a large duffle bag, boarded a bus and went to the bridge beneath the Galloping Goose Trail where her body was doused with fuel and set on fire. Investigators would later recover fabric, zippers, and grommets consistent with a duffel bag at the scene, and during the autopsy.

Later that morning, the 18-year-old's mother bought him a video game and took him for brunch. The 16-year-old spent the day with his girlfriend at his house.

A week later, the 16-year-old sent a text message to a female friend — the same one he'd texted two days before Proctor went missing — asking her to meet him online on World of Warcraft, an Internet game, to chat because he needed "to tell her something he could not tell her over the MSN chat lines."

In their online discussion, the 16-year-old told the girl that he had killed "Kim." The girl knew he was talking about Proctor because he also sent her links to news articles about her death and said that was her.

The 16-year-old told the girl, in disturbing detail, what he and the 18-year-old had done to Proctor: raping her, strangling her and mutilating her body.

The girl asked if he "pre-planned it." The 16-year-old said "yes."

The 16-year-old went on to say "he had dreamed about killing someone ever since he was young and it didn't feel like he thought it would," according to the agreed statement of facts.

He told the girl he thought he would get away with it and he didn't feel bad.

The 18-year-old also sent messages to the same girl about the killing. He told the friend he was "aware" they were going to target Proctor. The 16-year-old had approached him and asked him if he wanted to do it.

"When she asked him if he felt bad about it, he said he felt bad he was going to get caught, but said he did not feel bad for Proctor's family or friends," the statement said.

The youths will undergo psychiatric assessments and both the Crown and defence will prepare reports on recommended sentences.

The teens could be sentenced either as adults or youths.

Youths sentenced as adults get a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole for 10 years for a first-degree murder conviction. (In comparison, adults convicted of first-degree murder get a mandatory life sentence without possibility of parole for 25 years).

Youths sentenced as youths for first-degree murder get a 10-year sentence, consisting of a maximum of six years in custody and the remaining four years to be served in the community under conditional supervision.

Usually, the ban on identify is lifted when youths are sentenced as adults. Youths under 18 at the time of sentencing, usually serve the sentence in a youth facility. A person who is 18 or older at the time of sentencing, usually serves their sentence in an adult facility.

tl:dr those kids are sick fucks, and deserve nothing less than life in a "Pound You in the Ass" prison.

If they got away with it there is probably a decent chance they do it again. It's a good thing they aren't to fucking bright and left not only a bread crumb trail pointing to them but they might as well left a note with their name and address.

The only smart thing those two idiots did was plead guilty so the family would not have to endure a long trial and multiple appeals. Some people are so sick, hope her family can find a way to move forward. Here's to hoping they get charged as adults.

What a bunch of sick fucks. This is so disturbing on so many levels I don't really know how to explain what I feel.

At first I thought it had to do with WoW but it was just because he wanted to kill someone? That is so fucked up.

I sure hope they do get tried as adults and get locked up forever. If they're not tried as adults, whats the maximum sentence they get? This is isn't going to be easy for the family at all and hopefully they do find a way to cope with it.

They still have the chance. If charged as kids they will be out in 6 years. If charged as adults they can be out in 25. This is one of those cases where a bullit in the head is the best form of punishment.

Some stupid idiot woman trying to diagnose these kids saying they played WOW a lot and killed enemies so they must've wanted to try killing someone in real life. Starts talking about how parents should control what their kids play. its reprehensible that they would use such a tragic event to attack video games

these are rapists and women killers and they face some serious bullying when they're in jail even pre-trial as such pedos, rapists, etc are segregated from the general criminal element (they have their own wing in which they're kept)

yes it does

She dated one of the boys briefly during the winter of 2009, but there had been no email contact with her after November of that year.

The court was told that the day before Proctor went missing, the 16-year-old boy emailed her saying he wanted to meet to apologize and explain why he and the other boy "were so mean to her lately." They agreed to meet the next morning.

The 16-year-old then sent email messages to his accomplice, outlining their plan to lure Proctor to his house the next day, March 18, where they would sexually assault her, kill her, then burn and dispose of her body.

Apparently raping and killing teenage girls is hereditary for the 16 year old kid:

Murder runs in the family for teen killer

The father of one of the teenagers who murdered Kimberly Proctor is in jail for the brutal murder of a teen girl under similar circumstances, CTV News has learned.

The 16-year-old who pleaded guilty this week to raping, killing and then burning the body of the Vancouver Island teen was just a child when his father pleaded guilty to killing a teen girl.

Because the son is a young offender, neither he nor his father can be named, but the two killings were strikingly similar. Both girls were lured, beaten, bound, sexually assaulted, choked and killed.

In court this week, the boy said he had dreamed about killing someone since he was young, but offered no other reason for the murder.

Text messages between the son and his 18-year-old co-accused revealed that they had carefully planned the seduction and murder of 18-year-old Proctor.

On March 18, after declining the boys' advances, Proctor was lured to a home where her hands and ankles were duct taped. They stuffed a sock in her mouth and sexually assaulted her for hours.

A knife was used to mutilate her body and she eventually died. An autopsy revealed she couldn't breathe because of the tape over her mouth.

Proctor's body was placed in a freezer in the garage. The next day the teens carried her body in a duffel bag on a public bus to the Galloping Goose Trail near Colwood, where they lit her on fire.

The teen's charred body was found near a bridge on the trail.

In online chats, the boys admitted to a friend that they had picked Proctor because she was an easy target.

Crown prosecutors are asking for the two to be sentenced as adults. A youth sentence for the teens would mean a minimum jail term of 10 years without parole. This jumps to life with 25 years without parole as an adult.

The teenage killers are now undergoing psychiatric exams, and a judge will decide in March if they should be sentenced as adults.

‘Increased probability of violence' for children of murderers

Ray Corrado, a criminologist at Simon Fraser University, told CTV News that it's possible children could learn violence from their parents -- or that the aggression and impulse-control problems that lead to murder could be genetically linked.

"The research shows a strong link between a father's violence and criminality and the son's likelihood of criminality and violence," he said.

"You can't say that one causes the other, but there is an increased probability of violence when the father has a history of it."

Killers have been sentenced to life. Parole eligibility in 10 years :P

Kimberly Proctor's teen killers get adult sentences (http://calgary.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20110404/teen-murder-sentencing-110404/20110404/?hub=CalgaryHome)
wo B.C. teenage boys who admitted to first-degree murder in the horrific death of Kimberly Proctor were sentenced as adults for their crimes Monday.

They deserve the death penalty. Nothing can rehabilitate them - and even if they can who cares. They are useless to society. Crimes like this should lead to death. No questions asked. I'm sick of hearing about shit like this.

they will be out in under 30 for sure, 30 years isnt exactly payment for such a heinous crime

somone who gets a fucked up sentance like this, the victims family will eventually come to court with a gun and either kill the murderer or end up dead themselves, and even then who knows if judges etc. will wake up

you'll find even the USA is doing away with the Death Penalty with 16 states either with no death penalty or banning the death penalty http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Death_penalty_statutes_in_the_United_States-2011-10-03.svg

and the other states actually sentencing less people to the death penalty and execution rates are dropping (even in texas)

Canada is like that and depending if the conservative successfully get rid of stat release (which I disagree on) they will have a chance to come out even earlier

Statutory release doesn't apply to 1st/2nd degree murder convictions (any life sentence)
and it's not given if its believed you'll perform serious crimes if you're released (based on stat; its routine for most other situations though)

http://www.justicebc.ca/en/cjis/you/offender/parole/release.html

(ur only released if its believed your risk will be manageable until your sentence is up)

see this HA case as an example http://www.winnipegsun.com/news/winnipeg/2010/10/19/15754311.html

What I find stupid is that life is only 25 years... So even if they spent 'life' in prison. They will come out at the age of 42-43.
And they will probably live until they're 80-90. That's what pisses me off.

For murders like this, I think the death penalty should imply. For first degree murders such as this and it is proven without a doubt! Not a reasonable doubt, without total doubt as in this case, these guys should be hung or die by lethal injection.

Don't agree nor disagree.

But I would say, if you had that rule. No one will ever plead guilty, like these boys.

And you're going to overcrowd, overuse an already full prison system. Another fact, you prove without a doubt, that they did it, but 30 years down the road they solved it and say it wasn't them. Now what? He's dead.

It's hard to do these things.

Ah my fault, thanks but still 25 years is nothing

I wouldn't call 25 years nothing... think about how old you are?

for me 25 years... id have been in jail since I was 4... now think about all that transpired in that time now think about not being allowed to experience all that and having to be locked in a concrete room for all that time surrounded by Jailhouse Heroes who want to get some justice of their own over what you did during all that 25yrs

our federal prisons are no picnic rides

guys like these will normally get, or face the risk of, getting Hot(boiling)-Buttered(mixed with jelly so it sticks to you) aside from the beatings and maybe even attempted murder; so they'll be thrown into protective custody with rapists and child molesters (mean ones, strong ones, tough ones) who are horny

these two guys will literally be in living hell for 25 years (a very long time already without having to face what they'll be facing)

they wont be laughing like they were in the car ride for long
