: Should I Buy A Station Wagon?

Howdy, here's the backstory:

I have a Mercedes C36. My mother owns a Chrysler Town and Country and a New Beetle. I've been trying to sell the C36 for awhile. My mom only drives her New Beetle, but she's starting up a small business where she'll need to drive around small amounts of decorations. So she needs access to a vehicle with moderate cargo space. Also, I need a vehicle that can transport a drumset.

Of course, the most practical solution is to sell the C36 and then I drive the Town and Country for the most part except when my mom needs it. But let's be real: I am not driving a minivan as my main car.

Im thinking that if I am able to sell the C36 and the Town and Country, I buy something like a station wagon... something inbetween.

Is that sound logic? And if so, what're some good station wagons to look into? The only ones that seem to exist are Volvos and Outbacks.

thanks for the advice.

I'm definitely thinking used. I'm hoping to sell the Merc to recoup money. I guess my budget is however much I can sell the Town and Country for. It's an 04 I think, and it's got the DVD player and the works.

Do it! Wagons are look great, are utilitarian, and handle WAAAAAYYYY better than SUV's. My choices would be either be a Subaru Legacy Wagon or an Audi A4 Avant. A6 Avant if I could afford it.

Happy hunting!

Volvo XC/V70
Passat Wagon

Practical sleepers that will easily handle a drumset (I've tried) both with pretty decent power turbo engines

No interest in Rav4/CRV?

I think I know who you are. :D

My suggestion? Volvo wagon. Reliable, comfortable, safe as heck. You can get a 850 T5R wagon and still smoke ricers from the stoplight.

Otherwise, Mazda6 wagon?

EDIT: Oooh, what about a Saab 9-3 SportCombi? It's a pretty unique car.

audi allroad quattro!

my dad drives one, i think it was... 2000 or 2001. (2.7 L V6 BiTurbo). quite luxurious (for a ~2000 car), and you can buy a used one for ~$10,000+. (saw a few on Auto Trader a few months ago, but probably isnt the turbo version).

havent kept up with this, i dont think audi even makes them anymore... so if you want a used car, this is a fairly nice choice. (however, audi's maintainence costs is quite high).

^ i think they all came with either the 2.7TT version.. or the 4.2 V8

^oh, thanks for clarifying. i was under the impression they had non-turbo ones. maybe i was confused with the older generation. ;D

I switched to wagons during the last year, previously only having had sedans. We have an older outback and a newer Forester. The amount of stuff that fits into those cars is just boggling. I don't know how I lived with a sedan before.

Subaru. Whichever one fits your taste and budget, really. Symmetrical AWD is just amazing. The amount of traction is unbelievable. If you ever get to drive one in the snow it will sell you immediately.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the previous (2003-2009) Legacy wagon. You can get one that's not too old. You can get n/a or turbo. And they had an option for a huge sunroof. It's 97% wrx and 100% practical. You can have your cake and eat it too.

The outback is a great option if you need more ground clearance (Forester too). I found the Impreza to be a little too cramped/small, and the Forester actually seemed to handle better despite it's higher center of gravity (specifically the "turn in" feel - the current generation Impreza has soft suspension and doesn't have a rear sway bar, which seems to hurt it immensely).

Thanks! That's rlly useful.

I know doing a trade is the worst in terms of money, but I hate selling cars. How hard would it be to sell an 02 Town and Country? My mom and I are thinking just trading.

Mazda 6 Wagon.

I'm looking for one myself actually.

Do u plan to drive manual or auto?

5speed ones are quite reliable, cheap, and handle really well for a wagon.
the 2005+ 6 speed Automatics are reliable too. but the 5speed AT on the V6 are not.

great looking wagon too i think

I'm considering getting a wagon/SUV for my next car too...with the wife thinking about having kids in a few years...

Only problem is, I want a wagon/SUV that comes with manual transmission and there doesn't seem to be many out there! I know the Impreza WRX does, but it's a little too small. The Subaru Forester and Outback base models come in manual, but anything else? Even all the Audis are now tiptronic!
