Does anybody know of anywhere decent to eat up on Burnaby Mountain? I'm tired of eating Triple O'S.

What's open past like 6-7pm? Thats what I hate, after around 5 its a ghost town, and if you get hungry past that time you're pretty much SOL.

I'm sitting in Djavad Mowfaghian starving, with nowhere to eat. Cornerstone still open?

Mackenzie in the AQ is expensive and has mediocre food... :(

If you do end up buying a dining card I bet you'll end up going to the dining hall. (Still expensive, but at least they're open late..?) BTW the only people I've ever heard of totally using up their meal plan are athletes...

Donairs are pretty damn good, I have a bad jaw so I avoid eating it, it's like trying to fit a football in your mouth, they're a little too big IMO maybe too much lettuce i don't like taking a bite of meat and then taking a bite of lettuce.

Mackenzie is pretty expensive as others have stated, they have some good selection sometimes tho. Subway is, well subway lol.

surprised no one mentioned the ladle for soups and stuff like that

Yeah I don't like the huge amounts of lettuce in the donair. I hate having all meat in one bite and all lettuce in the other. I usually ate at Renaissance when I was still at SFU. Panini/Calzone + soup. Can get a little expensive though...

All the first years plug up the donair place now. It's great food though but getting pricy now.

Nature's garden panini's are awesome especially with hot sauce.

Been eating at spicy stone all this semester now, bibimbob or crispy chicken rice and put your own spicy sauce on it afterwards.

Spicy Stone and the donair place are good. The other place attached to the bubble tea place at Cornerstone had a pretty good hot pot as well.

I like Pizza Point's pizza personally too. Lots of great options at Cornerstone.

i like the Renaissance panini place... but the people working there make it so dirty/unsafe. who the fuck microwaves soup in a styrofoam bowl for 1 minute!? and i found plastic in my sandwich before, so that's not good either..

the mainlander couple working at the chinese place is not that great. it taste like manchu wok.

ugh donnairs. Is that dude that looks like genghis khan still there? I appreciate him loading my donnair up with stuff but it gets gross.... i asked him to stop with the sauce once but he didn't care....

Personally I wouldn't eat anything from any of the restaurants at sfu anymore if i was still going to school there. But if I had to eat anything, it'd be Koya for their chicken teriyaki rice. I'd forget the cafeteria food as that shit taste like shit.

Am I the only one that thinks shit is way over priced @ the chartwells convenience store in the AQ underneath the big steps (the biggest steps @ sfu in the convocation mall) ? Meh, not like I'm gonna stop going there but I just feel a bit ripped off, I usually go there 2-3x a day if its mon/wed/fri.

What's your guys' favorite dish at donair? I always get chicken platter, perhaps I will expand my horizons.

yes because the food served on campus has a direct cause and effect to the academics

That's what Donairs are suppose to be. If you had it in Turkey or in Berlin, you'd know that it's full of meat to the point you get sick of it after a while.

University is more than just academics. It's an overall experience which includes networking and many other things such as sports, extra curricular activities and the whole university experience. SFU is a commuter school. There is no Uni life there and thus does not create an environment for proper school spirit and networking. Why would anyone want to stay on campus later if it is not to study? Is there anything to do there? Absolutely not. No food, no entertainment, nothing.

So yes having a shitty food selection, keep in mind that there is NO option for food after 11pm or whatever time everything closes, not even a convenience store, does add to making SFU (the school) quite shitty.

Guess it comes down to definition of university, I just see it as go in, do your time in lectures, submit your assignments and write your exams.

Leave the socializing, partying, relaxation out of a school building. All those "uni life" activities are just add-ons, I don't see them as a "core" function of a university/school institution.

Regardless, SFU does have shitty food choices. Except for sushi california down by lougheed ;)

That's the problem with SFU, and it is exactly how you defined it. It's not your fault you think like that, it's SFU's culture to make you think like that. I am not saying SFU should be one big party orgy, but it should definitely have more of a community feel. By having extra "add ons", it will create a more positive atmosphere at SFU.

I am not sure about you, but I get these alumni emails from SFU all the time asking me to donate back. I am not being selfish (well I am kind of) but I won't give any money back to that shitty school. Besides giving me a piece of paper (which I paid for) what else has it done for me? I don't feel attached to SFU and neither do most students. So if you don't feel attached, why give back? Not only that, the alumni for SFU sucks ass. Rarely anyone knows about SFU if you don't live in BC or Canada. I am in Asia right now and there is a huge UBC presence and UT here, but no one gives a shit about SFU, not even past students.

I know this doesn't just stem from shitty food, but its part of the reason. Give SFU an entertainment building, build more restaurants with good food at affordable prices, build more of a city and students will want to stay at SFU longer.

Well, probably not since its on a fucking mountain out of nowhere and they want to preserve the green space. Oh well, shitty school.

[edit] I went to two other universities and with their school community feel and more effort in a uni lifestyle, it was a much more rewarding experience.

All true and it should try to do better with everything you mentioned, but it's no different than many other smaller universities. Not every school is UofT or UBC. Do ppl know about UVIC overseas?

I think sfu does at least a decent job of giving you coop, exchange, rec, and club opportunities. But you have to work harder to make more out of your experience. It's too bad some "brilliant" mind decided to stick it on top of a fuckin mountain.

At the same time, it's not SFU's fault you should have went to a different school.

What no love for the Hari-Krishna veggie lunch? 5 bucks, unlimited. It's vegetarian , but it'll fill you up. Best bang for your buck in SFU. Varsity guys come in with huge tupperwear containers and pay like 10 bucks for a week worth of that shit during the fall semesters.

I go to SFU but I go to ubc to study, and holy fuck what a difference. In sciences, the people can be snobby as hell (from what friends in UBC science tell me) but the atmosphere is so awesome. Their library is open 24 hours during exam time, and people actually study there at all times of night. They've got so many libraries and they all have private rooms, and some of them even give you your own projector/flatscreen with hdmi/vga hook ups. Ontop of that, they also offer nightly boarding if you're studying late and have an early exam and just want to sleep at school, $30 gets you a room.

All these little things add up and just depress the hell out of me when I have to go to that stupid rock in burnaby.
