as some of you know i am looking to trade my E46 M3 fr an SUV or something more practical that can be driven all season long. I posted an ad on craigslist and right away one guy emailed me asking if i was interested in a straight trade for a 2004 VW Phaeton.

i dont know much about this car but seems to good to be true. any feedbacks, suggestions, opinions?

I've seen that guy posting his car for sale or trade for a while now.
Seems like he might be quite eager to get rid of it. My point: be careful and find out as much as possible about the car, could be something wrong with it and Phaetons can be very expensive to fix.

i asked fro a reason why he was selling it and this was his response:
"I bought the car 1 1/2 years ago and did not consult my wife. She hates the car, mainly the size of it and the seats. I also have a 16 year old that has his L. He is not a fan of learning on such a big car either.
The car is great. One of the most incredible drives for a luxury car. It also has 335 bhp, so it moves well."

But an m3 would be a good car for a 16 year boy?
Sounds like he is trying to sell you on it by changing the subject. I get the feeling the guy is a car flipper based on how the ad is made. Don't get me wrong, the car looks clean and quite tempting, but I would hold onto the m3 for something better. I've traded cars like this a couple of times and there is always someone trying to pull a quick one.

Yeah the warranty is a big plus. He doesn't say whether it's factory warranty of certified pre owned from vw so make sure to find out what it covers. And it might be a lot harder to sell the car once the warranty is up. A good way to gauge the legitimacy of the guy and car is to actually meet and check out the cars. The more I read the ad and look at the car the more it seems legit... maybe I'll see if he is interested in a spec v with 14k on top.. but i no has 14 k :(

If you do end up trading you will get an awesome car. The Phaeton is one of the most under-appreciated super-luxury sedans...

judging by the platform im gonna guess its base off an A8
front end looks like the car could use some coffee to wake him up

yes you are absolutely correct. this car is based off the Audi A8L, same engine as well with just a little more HP. Frame design apparently is based off a Bentley.

It is, its basically the poor man's A8 (not that theres anything wrong with it). Apparently Volkswagen might be putting the Phaeton back into production too. Not sure why though since its so expensive.
edit*
2011 Phaeton from Beijing auto show.

Wonder how much it is price-wise compared to the Audi A8.

^^
The Phaeton never went out of production. They simply stopped selling them in the North American market. Sales are still going strong on the other side of the pond.
