Could the defunct Molson Indy return to Vancouver?
Yesterday, Octane Motorsports Events announced the cancellation of the 2011 Edmonton Indy and said they are considering holding the event in other cities, including Calgary, Quebec City and Vancouver.
“There is no doubt that Vancouver is an interesting, major international city,” Normand Prieur, spokesman fot Octane Motorsports, said yesterday.
Walt Judas, a vice-president with Tourism Vancouver, said the event would be welcome as it was popular and generated a lot of buzz.
“It kept locals in the city on Labour day when people normally leave town.”
Vision Coun. Geoff Meggs said people would be ecstatic about having Indy return to Vancouver. The track would have to be close to transit and would need room for bleachers, he added.
In spite of the popularity of the event, NPA Coun. Suzanne Anton said hosting the event would likely be quite challenging.
“I am a fan of the event,” said Anton, but the organization would first have to “iron out the problems” because “much of the course is now the Olympic Village.” The Molson Indy was last held in Vancouver during the summer of 2004 but was cancelled due lack of sponsorships and the pending construction of the Olympic Village in Southeast False Creek.
I remember one of these events being held like 5/6 years ago or something... the course was beside science world.

Some rumble strips and the victory paddock are still visible from the Skytrain on the way to Stadium. Not sure if they're still on the streets though.

I would love for it to come back. However, I can't imagine Mayor Greg saying yes to this after his huge eco-green stint.
Mind you, if they build the track to have a bike lane cutting into the first five feet of the inside lanes, he might be more inclined to say yes...

I see nothing but issue with his stupid bike lanes. Closing down major streets, lanes on bridges into bike lanes is just dumb.

just even south of the border, around Seattle, they have so much more events... including Formula Drift, etc.
If it came back to Vancouver that would be awesome..

If it came back to Vancouver, I don't think they could race downtown. There is no where to put grandstands, pits and merchandise stands. :(
It would probably have to be in the Valley somewhere. It would be cool if they did it in Abbotsford, with the farmland and mountains in the background. . Kind of like Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France.

I think Calgary is deciding whether or not to rebuild/move Race City after their renewed lease to 2015 expires. If that goes ahead, I see it going there.

seriously those bike riders need to either drive or take the bus & if they say that cars are not safe & ruins the environment, well i can tell them that riding a bike does the same so those biking yuppes can go to hell, cuz i think that bike lane park is pretty pointless in my mind
plus vancouver has a shit load of debt from the winter Olympics & the fact that we can use this money towards new pipes & stuff like that, so as much as i love it to come back i hope these become the priority 1st
& speaking of the indy do u guys remember those bike activist keep saying cars are bad & dangerous so they made there own racing cup called the molson undie" where they race in there bikes in there underwear (pretty stupid if u ask me)

it had more to do with development of false creek not because nimbist's complained.
Also new pipes...? are you talking about sewers? That was part of the Canada Economic Action Plan.
