I didn't catch this on the news on the weekend but just saw it on Global.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2010/11/08/bc-skopnik-wheelchair-hero.html

A Vancouver man who uses a wheelchair is being hailed as a hero after coming to the aid of a shopkeeper defending herself against an angry customer.

The customer was trying to pass a counterfeit $50 bill in Cindy Grewal's East Vancouver convenience store on Saturday night, the shopkeeper said.

When she told him she would not honour the currency and refused to return it to the man, he got angry and came behind the counter, Grewal said.

That's when Larry Skopnik got involved.

"Boom, I try to grab him," said Skopnik, who is paraplegic and has been using a wheelchair since breaking his back 10 years ago.

The two men started throwing punches at each other.

"His weight pulled me out of my chair," Skopnik said.

He said he continued to hold on to the man until two other men came to Skopnik's aid and held the man until police arrived.

Grewal, who has been in the convenience store business for 25 years, said she is grateful for people like Larry, who's long been a regular customer.

"My heart goes to him," she said. "Not even thinking for a moment that he is in a wheelchair … Such a sweetheart."

Skopnik said he was just doing the right thing to the best of his ability.

WTF is wrong with those other two guys just standing there?

Props to the wheeled hero. Someone buy that dude a steak!

No shit, get the guy a steak for sure.

I thought open season on a douchbag would be a total free-for-all.

Why is she allowed to just keep the currency like that?

I understand it if the bank keeps your fake currency (I've had that happen to me with one fake 100$ US bill), but if a shopkeeper at a local store says I can't get back my fake 50$ (so I can make sure it's fake) I'd be pretty pissed too.

^ they aren't aloud to... Cuz then the person will just use it somewhere else instead... it prevents the circulation of fake bills

When I saw this on the news I thought it was awesome.

Wheelchair guys freak me out, especially if they're coming from behind really fast. One false step and you'll lose a toe.
Anyone ever spot the motorized tricycle wheelchair? From behind it looks like a normal wheelchair, but he has a third wheel with handlebars. Half a year ago he passed me when I was driving, he was going way over 60 km.

I didn't know shop keepers were allowed to confiscate counterfeits, maybe the dude didn't know his 50 was a fake and thought he was just getting ripped off...there's always two sides to a story. I guess that's why there weren't any charges laid...

I think this could've all been avoided if the lady just gave back the man his 50$. It seems like she was pretty adamant about keeping his money. Why not just give it back to him? It shouldn't be the lady's call to withold his money. He could've easily been handed that 50$ himself, why aggravate him?

Just refuse him his purchase, and send him on his way.

I only say this because I've been given a fake HUNDRED (US) before, and there is no way that I'd just take the word of a convenience store lady telling me that it's fake and I can't have it back.

ive been told a $10 bill of mine was fake (it felt funny to me too) took it to the bank and they said it was fine but asked me if i wanted another one instead

under that new law the ndp is trying to push the shopkeeper could hog-tie that guy under suspicions that he was trying to commit a crime

i can understand why he'd be pissed; i think everyone can but the fact that the dude in the wheelchair stepped up to help a lady is overshadowing the issue

at a previous job of mine, we would examine the bill and if we felt it was fake we would give it back to them and send them on their way. one lady was adamant about her $100 (2 gens previous to current bill) being real. she bullshitted that she would be back with a different bill and ended up never showing her face again :lol

u guys know how to tell the authenticity of 2gen old 100s? ive still got a bunch of those and some $1000 bills left too

i remember back in the day you'd see people in t&t always pulling out 1000$ bills but if you'd try it at save-on/safeway they'd be like WTF???

do you mean the previous generation of 50's and 100's? if so, the ink runs if you smudge the bill on blank paper. other than that, there's supposed to be those green dots that are removable.

For bills, the person can ask for it back, and you refuse the service simple as that.

But fake credit cards we have to hold it and call the police right away.
