The latest big star in Japan not only isn't real, but their voice is fully synthesized. And they sell out live concerts using a hologram projection:

This is singing at its new low.... I can't believe this..
who gets paid
Interesting question. Either way as a "fake" product that basically costs nothing to upkeep or maintain like a real person's career it's a license to print money.

The difference is, they are just characters for an actual band. This is fully synthetic, even the voice

The main difference is that the Gorillaz actually sing and perform behind all their cartoon cameos.

There's a video on youtube about this with subs and apparently its voice software that allows you to create songs, so basically some guy messed with synthesizer etc to get this specific "girls" voice and then wrote the song, gets someone to say the lyrics and the computer adjusts to certain voice. I believe it's a buy able program from what i watched of the video and apparently random people make songs and people buy them. Certain ones get popular enough and get cd deals etc then this
First thing I thought of was also Macross..
